38 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Upsets Unbeaten Strasburg 29-25 (2-25-38)

The only contests on the county's Class B League Tournament program at Memorial Hall tonight will not be between the basketball teams.  There will be plenty of action in the stands when the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates and Strasburg Tigers clash in the evening's highlight.  And directing the action will be the cheerleaders.  Shown above are the cheerleaders from Sugarcreek-Shanesville:  Gladys Raber - Hope Bahler and Dorothy Mast.

The Strasburg High School Tigers will goad the Tigers to the rhythem produced by the trio shown above:  Virginia Mullet - Eddie Spidell and Marjhorie Hanner.

Sugarcreek-Shanesville High School Pirates Forward Marne Blick gained scoring honors and led his team to a 29-25 upset of the highly regarded and unbeaten Strasburg Tigers by scoring 12 points (5 field goals and 2 free throws).

DOVER - Emerging from one of the greatest field ever enrolled in the county's Class B League Tournment, the Baltic Eagles and Sugarcreek-Shanesville's Pirates today sit at the top of the League's tournament, ready to have at it tonight in the final championship setto.  Before a mob of 2,000 raving, screaming, howling fans that literally electrified them at the slaying floor, the Eagles and Pirates last night at Memorial Hall turned in a pair of upsets as great as any that ever delighted a tournament audience.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville beat off its old rival Strasburg;heretofore, undefeated this season in League play and the tourney favorite by a 29-25 score.  Baltic unleashed a powerful and steady attack that cut down the mighty Cardinals of Bolivar.

The losers of these 2 semi-final games went back into the Consolation brackets of the tournament here today at 1PM.  Bolivar was to engage Midvale, victor over Mineral City by a 44-18 count last night and Strasburg was to mix at 2PM with Gnaden, conquerer of Tuscarawas 33-25 last night.  Winners of this afternoon's games play the Consolation finals at 7:45 tonight.  The scramble of Baltic and Sugarcreek-Shanesville for the tournament crown and The Daily Reporter Trophy is scheduled for 8:45PM.  Trophies will be presented immediately after the game.

The Strasburg Tigers (2-1) (40-9) controlling the game completely in the 1st period, started to slip in the 2nd quarter, rallied in the 3rd stanza, but slumped again in the 4th and final period with the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (3-0) (27-15) taking charge, recovering the ball almost 90 percent of the time from either bankboard and finally penetrating the Tiger defense that they had been unable to pierce earlier.  The Pirates already beaten twice this season by Strasburg, fell 6 points behind in the 1st period, picked up 7 of them in the 2nd, held their own in the 3rd and then opened a withering fire that swept Strasburg's defense off it's feet and carried the Pirates to their victory.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville had a great deal of difficulty in hitting the hoop or even the bankboard for most of the 1st 3 quarters, but managed to stay even with the Tigers...after they caught them in the 2nd...by their hard and steady work.

The Pirates led 12-6 at the end of the 1st quarter marked by the scoring in its early minutes.  The Pirates struck back in the 2nd; however, as they rallied 7 points to Strasburg's 2 markers, with the latters field goal from the pivot by Senior forward Paul "Pete" Haswell.  Shortly after the 3rd period's opening, with Strasburg leading 14-13, forward Don Shepfer's 2 free throws for Sugarcreek put the Pirates in the lead.  Guard Phil Hostetler dropped in another field goal, but aggressive fielders by Sophomore forward Garver Wallick and Senior guard Bob Deibel put the Tigers back into the lead and they held on to an 18-17 advantage when the period ended.

Paced by Marne Blick, All-County forward unable to hit his stride in the early sessions, the Pirates flew through the final minutes of play.  Strasburg went on after the opening of the period and held a 24-21 lead.  Four and a half minutes remained.  Shepfer, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville forward, looped one in from the corner and was followed by Blick, who zipped his 1st one of the period from the corner to give Sugarcreek-Shanesville a 25-24 lead.  Haswell missed a free throw for Strasburg and Blick duplicated his previous stunt before Wallick hit one of 2 foul shots and Blick ended it with his 3rd bucket of the period.

Blick was the only Pirate in double-figures with 12 points.  Shepfer followed his teammate finishing with 9 points.  Haswell and Senior Charles "Babe" Reiger of Strasburg were tied with 7 points each (both with 3 field goals and a free throw).

Wild though the celebration was when the Pirates returned victoriouis, it had nothing on the ovation which greeted Baltic when the Eagles copped their triumph over the Bolivar Cardinals.
