35 - Bolivar Collapes 38-36 Against New Matamoras (3-14-35)

DENNISON - Bolivar appeared stale, while New Matamoras took advantage.  Appearing a bit over-trained and stale and nothing like the ball club that fought its way to a 3-way tie for the Tuscarawas County League Basketball Championship and finished as runer-up in the Tuscarawas County Tournament, the Bolivar Cardinals (5-2) were in trouble throughout its game with the New Matamoras Cougars.  Of the entire club only Junior center Paul Class of the Cardinals seemed to be himself.

After grabbing a 9-2 lead in the opening minutes, the Cardinals slipped up and let forward Payton and guard Cunningham, Cougar tossers, have 4 sucker shots from the old "pot-hanging" position.  Payton made it 5 as the 2nd period opened and put his team into a 13-13 tie with Bolivar.  When halftime rolled around, New Matamoras had rolled into a 23-17 lead with most of the honors going to Payton who experienced little difficulty in getting between his guard and the basket.  The southern team led 33-27 at the close of the 3rd period.  The Cardinals pulled up in the final period, but was unable to completely overtake the fast breaking Cougars.

New Matamoras' Payton was high scorer and took game honors with 17 points (8 field goals and a free throw).  Paul Class had 14 points (6 field goals and 2 free throws) and Ward Kreis picked up 12 points (5 field goals and 2 free tosses) for Bolivar.

35 - Sectional Tournament Wrap-up

DOVER - Strasburg Upsets Tuscarawas In Thriller - Bolivar and Malvern Winners.

STRASBURG AVENGED...MALVERN UPSETS DENNISON...BOLIVAR WON EASILY

In brief, those were the net results of the Class B Sectional Basketball Tournament finals on Saturday night at Legion Hall.  The Strasburg Tigers (5-1) and the Bolivar Cardinals (5-1) and the Malvern Green Hornets of Carroll County will play in the District Class B contests at Dennison this week.

Strasburg 28 - Tusky 25
Malvern 39 - Dennison 34
Bolivar 47 - Millersburg 31

For Strasburg, it was the most decisive, most thrilling and most appreciated victory of the entire season.  It was revenge over a powerful, scrapping and championship team.  Revenge over the same Tusky team which won the County Championship just last week after eliminating Strasburg from the championship rounds of the County Class B Tournament with a score of 34-23.  The same team that had tumbled Strasburg from its top perch in the County League a few weeks ago by a score of 17-16.  The Saturday night victory wasn't an easy one.  It took clear-headed, air-tight, alert basketball by Head Coach Paul M. Roby's boys.  The game had the 800 fans at Legion Hall in a frenzy during the last quarter when it looked like anybody's contest.  With the crack of the gun ending the fray, Strasburg followers rushed to the floor in a gigantic demonstation.

Vanquished, Head Coach Charmis Davis' County Champions had to accept ironic fate of tournament play.  This time it means that Strasburg and Bolivar will go on to the District meet, while Tusky...which conquered both those teams here last week...is eliminated.  Equally thrilling, the Dennison-Malvern game was a fitting prologue, to the Strasburg-Tuscarawas fracas.  Dennison led almost the entire way through until the last quarter when Malvern spurted to victory.  The Bolivar-Millersburg contest was anti-climax.  It lacked the thrills of the other games as Bolivar scored at will over the Millersburg cagers.

DOVER - Led by 6-3 Junior center Paul Class, who scored 22 points (9 field goals and 4 free throws), the Bolivar Cardinals (5-1) romped to an easy victory over the Millersburg Knights by 16 points, 47-31.  There was no comparison in strength of the 2 teams.  The Cardinals clicked from the outset, scoring 16 points in the 1st quarter, while the Knights chalked up four.  At the end of the 2nd quarter the score stood at 27-12.  In the 3rd quarter the Cardinals were leading 34-16.

35 - Strasburg In Comeback With Seconds To Go Over Tusky 28-25 (3-9-35)

Strasburg Tigers Head Coach Paul M. Roby after extracting revenge on the Tuscarawas Broncos, Tuscarawas County Champions, headed his team toward Dennison in hopes of another District Championship.  After 3 tries this season, Strasburg finally beat Tusky 28-25.

DOVER - Right from the start, the Strasburg Tigers (5-1) had the edge on the Tuscarawas Broncos (4-1).  The Tigers widened the lead until at the end of the 3rd quarter the score stood 18-11.  The Tigers finally won 28-25 with only seconds to go.  Then in the last quarter, Senior forward Calvin Knisely and Senior center Earl Schumacher of Tusky went on a scoring spree running the score to 26-23, still Strasburg's favor.  During the spree, Senior center George Denzer and Senior forward Bill "Doodle" Haas of Strasburg were ejected from the game on personal fouls.  Play during the 1st half showed Strasburg leading 6-3 in the 1st period and 11-7 in 2nd period.

Senior guard Dick Demuth added another basket for the Broncos and Senior guard Adrian "Fuzz" Miller, Tiger guard, was ejected on personals.  There were 40 seconds remaining to play.  Little Babe "Bud" Rieger (christened Charles) was substituted for Miller.  Both teams fought furiously for possession of the ball.  Tuscarawas missed long shots.  The ball was snapped to Rieger who dribbled in, twisted in a pot shot from the left side of the north basket to clinch the game for Strasburg.  He missed a free throw received when he was fouled on the shot.

Miller was high man with a game high of 10 points (4 field goals and 2 free tosses) and repeatedly won plaudits of fans for his floor tactics.  Miller "played the ball," snatching it from the backboard time and time again.  Haas before leaving the game had scored 7 points (3 field goals and a free throw).  Denzer, Senior forward Jim Dreher and Junior forward John "Sparkie" Sparks were a steadying influence in passing.  Freshman forward Paul Haswell and Sparks, who replaced Haas and Denzer, each scored a basket.  Knisely, Schumacher and Demuth each scored 7 points for the Broncos (2 field goals and 3 free throws), (3 field goals and a free throw and 3 field goals and a free throw).

35 - Eastern Ohio Northern Sectional Basketball Tournament Update

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers (4-1) play the Tuscarawas Broncos (4-0) and the Dennison Railroaders and Bolivar Cardinals (4-1) meet outside outfits.  Strasburg and Tusky will fight it out again tonight at Legion Hall in the Class B Sectional Cage Tournament.  The game is scheduled for 8PM.  Dennison will meet the Malvern Green Hornets at 7PM and Bolivar, Tuscarawas County runner-up, will clash with the Millersburg Knights at 9PM.  Admission prices for tonight's session will be 25 and 50 cents, according to  E.W. Blackstone, Tournament Manager, who made the announcement today.  For 1st round games the admission were 25 and 35 cents.  Winners of tonight's contest will qualify to play in the District Tournament at Dennison next week.

The Tigers won the right to play the Broncos by tucking away the Coshocton Sacred Heart Fighting Irish 36-18, last night.  Millersburg became a finalist by downing Warsaw 26-16, while Bolivar checked the Philo Electrics 41-25.  The Cardinals are favored over Millersburg, the Railroaders over the Green Hornets in tonight's rounds.  With the 4 Tuscarawas County teams in tonight's finalist contest, most interest will be centered on the Tiger-Bronco fracas.  Hundreds of fans are expected to see the contest.  Twice defeated by Tuscarawas, Head Coach Paul M. Roby's County Consolation winners will be unleased for revenge.

Conqueror, Head Coach Charmis Davis' county champions will battle to retain it's jinx over Strasburg.  The winner of that game will be considered the strong contender for honors at Dennison.  Tuscarawas edged Strasburg from the County Class B League top a few weeks ago at Tusky by a 17-16 one-point score.  Then, in the tourney last week before a record crowd, the Broncos again beat Strasburg 34-23 and the Tigers reverted to the Consolation rounds and won the title there.  A crowd of only 250 watched last night's games at Legion Hall.  Earl D. Gross and Jimmie Morgan of New Philadelphia were referees.

35 - Bolivar Crushes Philo 41-25 (3-8-35)

DOVER - Clicking in every department of the game, the Bolivar Cardinals (4-1) defeated the Philo Electrics of Muskingum County by a score of 41-25 in another wild contest at the Southestern Ohio North Sectional Class B Basketball Tournament last night.  Led by 6-3 Junior center Paul Class and forward Ward Kreis, the Cardinals outclassed the scrappy and speedy Electrics.  Bolivar opened a scoring onslaught in the first 6 minutes and before Philo found the basket had tallied 10 points.  That 1st quarter ended at 12-3 Cardinals.  In the 2nd quarter, the Electrics picked up speed, but still lost ground 23-10 at the half.  In the 3rd quarter it looked like the game would be closer than Bolivar expected as Philo closed within 7 points 30-23.  In the 4th and final quarter, the Electrics hit the skids and could only manage 2 more markers, while the Cardinals sank 11 points, dumping in 5 field goals in rapid succession and swished a free throw.  Guard Harold Turvey and Kreis led the last minute rush for points.

Guard Hodgson, center Charles and forward Huntsman, all of Philo, were ejected from the game in the last quarter.  The Cardinals, despite a spell of recklessness in the 3rd period, dumped in 16 field goals as compared with the Electrics ten.  Class gained contest honors with 15 points (6 field goals and 3 free throws), while Kreis hit for 13 points (5 field goals and 3 free throws) for the Cardinals.  No Philo players hit double figures, but Hodgson came close with 9 points (4 field goals and 1 free toss) to lead the team cause.

35 - Strasburg Trashes Sacred Heart 36-18 (3-8-35)

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers (4-1) had little trouble eliminating the Coshocton Sacred Heart Fighting Saints 36-18 in the 1st game on Saturday night in the Eastern Ohio Northern Sectional Tournament.  From the start, Strasburg's Head Coach Paul M. Roby's boys took the lead.  It was Senior guard Adrian "Fuzz" Miller who tallied most in the 1st half.  In the 2nd half, Senior forward Jim Dreher and Junior guard Don Scherer kept the Fighting Irish guards worried.  The game was rough throughout, replete with personal fouls, most of which were called on Coshocton.  Two technical fouls for rebuking Referee Gross were also called on Sacred Heart.

The Tigers' offensive game was enhanced by speedy passing which bewildered the Saints, while the man-to-man defense was airtight during many minutes of the fracas.  Strasburg ran up an 11-3 1st quarter and maintained the lead in the 2nd quarter 18-9.  The Tiger lead was increased to 16 points and the scoreboard show 27-11 at the end of the 3rd quarter.  Coshocton Sacred Heart collected 8 points, while Strasburg hit for 9 more points in the 4th Stanza to put the game away.

Miller of Strasburg took game honors with 10 points (3 field goals and 4 free throws), while his mates, Scherer and Miller, followed that up with 8 and 7 points (4 field goals) and (2 field goals and 3 free tosses).  Tiedt lead the Fighting Irish with a total of 7 points (3 field goals and a foul toss).

35 - Tuscarawas Knocks-Off Dover St. Joseph's 41-17 (3-7-35)

Tuscarawas Broncos Senior forward Ralph Moore scores 12 points in win over Dover's St. Joseph's Ramblers.

Tuscarawas Broncos Senior center Earl Schumacher matches teammate Moore for game honors with another 12 points to secure win.

DOVER - The Tuscarawas Broncos (4-0) banged away from the start.  Twelve points were scored in 6 minutes before the Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers dropped in its 1st field goal.  Moore and Schumacher led the field with 12 points each (4 field goals and a same number of free throws) (3 field goals and 6 free throws) as the Tusky machine clicked with seldom-interrupted smoothness.  At times the Broncos were a bit erratic, but they had little trouble holding a wide margin which became even gibber in the last quarter when St. Joseph's failed to score a point.  Tuscarawas set up a close guard which combined with fast breaking to the basket resulted in the scoring of 13 field goals, while the Ramblers tallied just six.  Out of 16 free tosses, St. Joseph's made 5, while Head Coach Charmis Davis' champions made 15 out of 21.

The Broncos ran out to a 15-6 first quarter lead and never looked over their shoulders.  By the half, Tusky was sitting on an 18-10 lead.  They then had stampede to a 31-10 lead ending the 3rd quarter.  During the 4th stanza, Tusky was totally in charge with an overwhelming defense that held the Ramblers scoreless, while the Broncos put up an additional 10 points and put the game squarely in their pocket.

Forward Lab, Dover St. Joseph's high scorer hit the nets for 8 points (3 field goals and 2 free tosses), followed by teammate guard Hartz with 5 markers (2 field goals and 1 free throw).  Four Ramblers...center Bambeck, Hartz, forward Snyder and guard Endres...were ejected from the contest for having 4 personal fouls.

35 - Three Have Chance To Enter Sectional Tournament

DOVER - Three Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball teams are given opportunities to qualify for the Eastern Ohio District finals in drawings for the Sectional Tournament which will be held at Legion Hall here on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Only 3 teams will be qualified by the Sectional elimination and this county placed teams in each of the 3 brackets.

Drawings, held at Legion Hall last night under direction of E.W. Blackstone, Principal of Dover High School and Manager of the tournament, placed the Tuscarawas Broncos, Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers and the Strasburg Tigers in the same bracket where only one team can qualify.  The Bolivar Cardinals and Dennison Railroaders each drew in brackets where no other county teams were placed.  Dennison drew the Walnut Creek Cardinals of Holmes County for the 1st game of the meeting on Thursday at 7PM.  The Malvern Green Hornets of Carroll County drew Clark of Holmes County for the 2nd game of the evening.  Winners of the 2 games play at 7PM Saturday for the right to enter the finals.

In the 2nd bracket Dover St. Joseph's plays Tuscarawas at 9PM Thursday and the Coshocton Sacred Heart Fighting Saints plays Strasburg at 7PM Friday.  Winners of the 2 games meet Saturday at 8PM for the right to go to Dennison for the District Championship.  In the bottom bracket Warsaw of Coshocton County drew the Millersburg Knights for 8PM Friday and Bolivar drew the Philo  Electrics of Muskingum County for 9PM Friday.  Winners here will play at 9PM Saturday for the right to enter the District finals.

Should Tusky and Strasburg be successful in their 1st games, their meeting on Saturday night will mark the 3rd time this season they have met on the gymnasium floor with something more than mere victory at stake.  The 1st meeting was a League game and Strasburg had a 46-game winning streak in the pot.  The Broncos won that game by one point 17-16.  The next meeting was in the semi-finals of the county tournament where Strasburg was the defending champion.  Tuscarawas won that game 34-23.  This week's game gives the winner a chance to compete for the District Title and a trip to the State finals at Columbus.

All teams in the tournament were represented at the drawing except for Philo and Warsaw.  Admissions will be 25 cents for Students and 35 cents for adults for each of the 3 sessions.  Earl D. Gross of New Philadelphia will be one of the 2 officials.  The 2nd has not be named.

Tuscarawas Broncos 7th year Head Coach Charmis Davis won his 1st Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament and helped his team to a 3-way 1st Place League Championship all in 1 years time.

The entire 1935 Tuscarawas Broncos Basketball Team.  FIRST ROW - Alphonse De Cotiis, Clarence Eckhardt, Edwin Stevenson, Lloyd Myers, William Donehue, Angelo Marcaletti, Joseph Bollini, Lawrence Henry, Alexander Bonvechio and Dario Cardani.  SECOND ROW - Head Coach Charmis Davis, Donald Schwab, Eugene Reiser, Donald Myer, Ralph Minnich, Earl Meyers, Reno Besozzi, Howard Knisely, Louis Caravati, Claude Crites, and Manager Stanley Patterson.  THIRD ROW - Richard Demuth, Calvin Knisely, Earl Schumacher, Anthony Bassetti, Lester Veigel, Allen Veigel, Ralph Moore, Kenneth Tachudy, Floyd Reichman, Richard Minor, Charles Cardani, and Robert Parker.

Tuscarawas Broncos Senior lankey center Earl Schumacher scored 15 points in tonight's important Championship game in one of the best Bronco years to date.

DOVER - Tuscarawas, Bolivar and the Strasburg Tigers, big 3 of the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball League, finished the loop's tournament in that order at Legion Hall on Saturday night.  The Tuscarawas Broncos (3-0) (6-13) defeated the Bolivar Cardinals (3-1) (15-12) in the final game 45-34 to win the Championship held by Strasburg for the last 3 years.  The Tigers tumbled out of the joust in the semi-finals, downing the Midvale Blue Devils 27-16 to win the Consolation prize.  The winner, runner-up and Consolation winner all qualified for the Eastern District Sectional meeting at Legion Hall this week-end.  Drawings for the Sectional will be held tonight.

Playing before an enthusiastic crowd that comfortably filled the Hall, Head Coach Charmas Davis' Broncos swept to the Championship with a last half rush.  Bolivar had held the game at even terms during the 1st half, but weakened toward the close.  A lightning-fast 1st quarter ended with Tusky leading 14-11 and that lead was advanced to 16-11 at the very start of the 2nd quarter.

The Cardinals rallied there and on 2 buckets by forward Ward Kreis and a 3rd by guard Kermit Lebold, jumped into the lead 17-16.  The advantage, the only one Bolivar held during the entire game, was short-lived and was lost when Senior forward Calvin Knisely dropped 2 action shots through the hoop in rapid succession.  The half ended with the Broncos leading 23-20.  The Davis team held a 14-point lead once during the 3rd period with the score 34-20.  At the close of the quarter the Cardinals rallied and pumped in 5 points.  The issue seemed settled and the 4th quarter moved along with both teams scoring frequently.  In that period Bolivar garnered 9 points, Tuscarawas 11.

Leading the cause for Tusky was center Earl Schumacher with 15 points (7 field goals and 1 free throw).  His teammate Senior guard Dick Demuth also hit for double figures with another 10 points (4 field goals and 2 foul shots).  Bolivar's 6-3 Junior center Paul Class claimed game honors with 19 points (7 field goals and 5 free throws).

Trophies were presented between halves of the final game.  W.E. Laws of Midvale, Tournament Manager, presented the tournament prizes and W.C. Smith of Gnaden presented the 3 trophies to the Tuscarawas Broncos, Strasburg Tigers and the Bolivar Cardinals as co-champions of the League.  Team Captains received the awards.

To the Tuscarawas Champions went The Daily Reporter Championship Trophy and individual medals from Walter E. Leiser, Inc.  The S. Toomey Co. Trophy went to Bolivar as runner-up and the Saitary Milk Co. Award went to Strasburg as the Consolation Champion.  Trophies for the 3 co-champions of the loop were given by the E. Fienberg Co., Senhauser Clothing Co. and Godrey Electric Co.
