35 - Three Have Chance To Enter Sectional Tournament

DOVER - Three Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball teams are given opportunities to qualify for the Eastern Ohio District finals in drawings for the Sectional Tournament which will be held at Legion Hall here on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Only 3 teams will be qualified by the Sectional elimination and this county placed teams in each of the 3 brackets.

Drawings, held at Legion Hall last night under direction of E.W. Blackstone, Principal of Dover High School and Manager of the tournament, placed the Tuscarawas Broncos, Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers and the Strasburg Tigers in the same bracket where only one team can qualify.  The Bolivar Cardinals and Dennison Railroaders each drew in brackets where no other county teams were placed.  Dennison drew the Walnut Creek Cardinals of Holmes County for the 1st game of the meeting on Thursday at 7PM.  The Malvern Green Hornets of Carroll County drew Clark of Holmes County for the 2nd game of the evening.  Winners of the 2 games play at 7PM Saturday for the right to enter the finals.

In the 2nd bracket Dover St. Joseph's plays Tuscarawas at 9PM Thursday and the Coshocton Sacred Heart Fighting Saints plays Strasburg at 7PM Friday.  Winners of the 2 games meet Saturday at 8PM for the right to go to Dennison for the District Championship.  In the bottom bracket Warsaw of Coshocton County drew the Millersburg Knights for 8PM Friday and Bolivar drew the Philo  Electrics of Muskingum County for 9PM Friday.  Winners here will play at 9PM Saturday for the right to enter the District finals.

Should Tusky and Strasburg be successful in their 1st games, their meeting on Saturday night will mark the 3rd time this season they have met on the gymnasium floor with something more than mere victory at stake.  The 1st meeting was a League game and Strasburg had a 46-game winning streak in the pot.  The Broncos won that game by one point 17-16.  The next meeting was in the semi-finals of the county tournament where Strasburg was the defending champion.  Tuscarawas won that game 34-23.  This week's game gives the winner a chance to compete for the District Title and a trip to the State finals at Columbus.

All teams in the tournament were represented at the drawing except for Philo and Warsaw.  Admissions will be 25 cents for Students and 35 cents for adults for each of the 3 sessions.  Earl D. Gross of New Philadelphia will be one of the 2 officials.  The 2nd has not be named.
