35 - Tusky Defense Ends Strasburg Reign 34-23 (3-1-35)
Tuscarawas Broncos Senior Forward Ralph Moore gains game honors with 11 points.
Tuscarawas Broncos Grace DeCotiis and Phyllis Kyte, team cheerleaders, lead fans in cheering their team on to a huge victory over the Mighty Strasburg Tigers 34-23.
DOVER - The oldest basketball dynasty in the county Class B League was toppled from its throne last night when the Tuscarawas Broncos (2-0) (5-13) turned back the Strasburg Tigers (1-1) (30-6) 34-23 in last night's thrilling contest. The Tigers have won the Tournament Championship of the county 6 times and have held it for the last 3 years in a row. The performance of 7th year Head Coach Charmis Davis' Broncos in reversing the Strasburg Tigers, was the class of the tournament so far and the outstanding performace of the entire League season.
Setting up an airtight defense that kept the Tigers sorely put for good shots after the opening minute and uncorking an offense that featured high percentage shooting, Tusky actually steam-rolled the famous Tigers. From the moment the Broncos 1st gained possession of the ball at the opening of the game, they were the masters. With a fast streak that heralded 4 quarters of similar efficiency, Tuscarawas turned that 1st possession into 2 points in less than 5 seconds.
The Broncos led 12-2 at the end of the 1st quarter and 16-6 at the half. The Tigers were still unable to find themselves in that bewildering cross-fire of bullet passes, trailed 24-11 as the final period opened. Strasburg rallied and moved up to within 7 points of Tusky when the score reached the 28-21 stage. But, the rally was stopped with much more suddenness than it started as the victors added 6 straight points before Strasburg finally collected 2 fouls to complete the scoring.
Senior forward Ralph Moore was high scorer in the game with 11 points collected on 4 field goals and 3 free throws. Senior forward Calvin Knisely contributed 7 points (3 field goals and a free throw) and Sophomore center Lester Veigel 6 points (3 field goals) to the Tusky cause. Senior guard Adrian "Fuzz" Miller, Strasburg ace, was 2nd high with 10 points (2 field goals and 6 free throws. It was Tuscarawas who brought down 5th year Head Coach Paul M. Roby's Strasburg Tigers in their only loss of the League season 17-16.
