33 - 2nd Tournament Update

DOVER - True to all predictions, the Bolivar Cardinals, Strasburg Tigers, Sugarcreek-Shanesvile Pirates and the Baltic Eagles advanced to the semi-finals of the Annual County Class B Basketball Tournament before 1000 fans at Legion Hall last night.  The play on Friday night, resulted as follows:

Bolivar 21 - Mineral City 19
Strasburg 35 - Port Washington 25
Sugarcreek-Shanesville 40 - Dundee 24
Baltic 48 - Gnadenhutten 25

On today's semi-finals program:

1:30PM  Bolivar - Strasburg
2:30PM  Sugarcreek-Shanesville - Baltic

Although there were no upsets, the Port Washington Purple Riders came near dumping the apple-cart in its game with Strasburg last night.  Head Coach Paul Roby of the latter team, which rules as a favorite to enter the finals, started his 2nd team and the Purple Riders went so hot against them that it took all the Tigers' Varsity could do to emerge victorious.  The Porters took an 8-4 lead in the 1st period and in the early minutes of the 2nd, when Coach Roby injected his 1st stringers, slipped ahead to a score of 15-9 before the Burgers could stem the tide.

When Baltic elimiated the Gnadenhutten Indians the last of the southern gentry left the lists and the new champion was destined to be one of 4 teams from the northern half of the county with Strasburg and Sugarcreek-Shanesville holding the upper hand.  Baltic, which turned in a rather sloppy performance against the Midvale Blue Devils Thursday, showed much more form last night and proved themselves real contenders for the honors at stake.

Sugarcreek-Shanesville showed the same smooth, rippling brand of ball against the Dundee Bulldogs that eliminated the Stone Creek Panthers the night before.

If Strasburg and Sugarcreek-Shanesville go to the finals tonight, they and Dundee will represent the county system in the Eastern Ohio Sectional Class B Basketball Tournament at Legion Hall Next week.  The arrangement is for the winner and runner-up of this tournament and the defeated team finishing highest in the League Standings be accorded that honor.  Dundee finished 3rd with Strasburg in 1st and Sugarcreek-Shanesville in second.

NOTE:  In the 1st year of the tournament (1923), Strasburg had hit for 52 points against Gnaden in the championship game of that year.  The 52 points held up until 1927 when the Sugarcreek-Shanesville team hit 61 points in a game against Tuscarawas.  This year, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates came close to matching their own record when they hit 60 points against Stone Creek.  So, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates still hold the record of 61 points held since 1927.

DOVER - Other teams in the tournament let go a sign of relief when the Baltic Eagles (1-0) (3-7) eliminated the Midvale Blue Devils (0-1) (8-5) by a score of 32-27 in the closest game on tap last night.  Midvale, long known as an upsetter, was considered the meeting's "Dark Horse."  The Eagles piled up an 8-point lead in the 1st half last night, but the Blue Devils cut it to 7 as the 3rd period ended and then cut it another 2 in the final canto with frantic efforts to rally out of defeat.

Baltic led 12-7, 22-14 and 30-23 at the period ends.  Forward Abbuhl of Midvale was the high scorer of the game with 10 points.  He was followed by Senior forward Henry Haas and Sophomore guard Paul Levengood of the Eagle team.  Both the latter had 8 markers.

33 - Gnaden Blows Out New Cumberland 49-27 (2-23-33)

DOVER - The New Cumberland Trojans (0-1) (0-2), playing its 2nd Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament game ever, was eliminated by the Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) (13-8) with a score of 49-27, but succeeded in winning the respect of other tournament teams in the game.  The score indicates a rather one-sided game, but the opposition given the Indians by the losers was more powerful than their 27 points reflect.  With ordinary shooting luck the newcomers would have made a real game out of the contest.  They rimmed a great majority of their shots.

The Indians took a 7-3 lead in the opening period and was ahead 20-6 at halftime.  They piled to their total to lead 36-14 at the 3rd quarter mark.  Senior Bob Kennedy, pot-hanging Gnaden forward, led the scoring with 16 points counted on half as many buckets.  His brother, Sophomore forward and Junior guard Melvin Struchen tied for 2nd high honors with 12 points apiece.  Nemetz and R. Shaffer were high for the Trojans with 10 markers each.

32 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates Fall 35-21 (3-19-32)

COLUMBUS - A defense that cracked in the 2nd half cost the Pirates of Sugarcreek-Shanesville (9-2) victory in a semi-final game at the State Tournament in Columbus on Saturday afternoon.  Ostrander eliminated the Pirates 35-21 and then lost to Castalia, the new State Champion, in the title contest Saturday night.  For 3 quarters the Pirates held Ostrander to a close score.  The victors led at the 1st period 12-6, but Junion forward Boyd Burkey dropped in 4 successive field goal's from long range and the score was tied at 15 at the half.

The Pirates still were within striking distance at the end of the 3rd period with Ostrander leading by only 23-19.  The losers failed to check their men in the final heat and Ostrander went on to win by a comfortable margin.  The Pirates tallied only one field goal in the 3rd and 4th quarters, a long shot by Burkey.  Burkey chalked up 2 free throws and center Harold Logsdon and Senior Captain guard Sylvester Harmon one each to make the Sugarcreek-Shanesville total 6 points for the 2nd half.  Senior Ken Ricker was chased on 4 personal fouls in the 4th period.  Burkey was high scorer with 6 field goals and 3 free throws for a total of 15 points.  Harmon and Senior guard Hugo Wassem, who played a sensational game throughout the tournament and was directly responsible for the 28-27 victory over Stewart on Friday night, each chalked a field goal.

Freshwater, Ostrander's great star, chalked up 10 points, but was topped by Hutchinson, who tallied 16.

32 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates Wins 28-27 (3-18-32)

Members of the 1932 Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates, Champions of the Eastern District, basketball team photo.  Ken Ricker - Forward, Sylvester Harmon, Captain, - Guard, Harold Logsdon - Center, Vernon Finzer - Center, Hugo Wassem - Guard, Boyd Burkey - Forward (scored 363 points this season), Dean Norris, Nolan Blosser, Wilson Harmon, Prince Harmon, Head Coach Harold Sundheimer and A.C. Bahler, Superintendent of schools and former head coach of the Pirates.  (Friday, March 18, 1932)

COLUMBUS - The united roar of 6,000 fans filled the huge coliseum with a bedlam of sound here last night in tribute to the gold-shirted Pirates of Sugarcreek-Shanesville (9-1), who rallied around the goal in the last 2 minutes of play to defeat Stewart, 28-27 and win their way into the semi-final round of this 10th Ohio State Basketball Tournament.  Spectators, disinterested because the issue apparently had been decided, arose to cheer the game stand of a team that refused to acknowledge the possibility of defeat.  Trailing by 3 points and with less than 3 minutes of playing time left, the Pirates tried the score at 27 and won out 45 seconds from the final gun when Junior Forward Boyd Burkey toed the free-throw line and swished a charity toss through the net.  The Class B Champions of the Eastern District, who a moment before had been raging goalward, cooly stalled the final brief seconds, while the desperate Stewart Raiders frantically tried to gain possession of the ball.

But, victory went to the team that fought for it.  And, when Timekeeper A.B. Long's pistol cracked the Priates were given a great ovation by an audience that thrilled to another complification of the axiom..."A team that won't be beaten can't be beaten."  While Burkey's foul toss accountef for the story-book finish, the 2 timely field goals by Senior guard Hugo Wassem of Sugarcreek-Shanesville, put the Pirates back in the running.

The score was 27-22 in favor of the smart, smooth-passing Athens County aggregation and 3 minutes and 15 seconds of playing time remained when Wassem leaped high, intercepted a pass and dribbled half the length of the 75-foot court to sink a fielder.  Senior forward Ken Ricker was fouled and he made, good his free toss.  Wassem again broke loose from his guard position, headed for the goal to take a pass from center Harold Logsdon and tied the score with a neat sucker-shot.  Burkey, dribbling toward the basket in his deceptive fashion, was fouled by Ogg, Steward guard.  The Pirates' leading scorer, without hesitation, stepped to the foul line and wished the ball through the hoop.  Logsdon controlled the next tip at center and the Pirates retained possession of the ball and their one-point lead to the end.

At the finish, Head Coach Harold Sundheimer, Superintendent A.C. Bahler, and the Pirate substitutes and Trainers, Fritz Weber and Willard McKeever, who had given up hope of victory, rushed out on lthe floor to pound the backs of their scrapping favorites.  The victors won the support of a host of fans by their swirling finish and fans who prior to last night had never heard of Sugarcreek, nor of Shanesville, this afternoon will be rooting for a team that fights hardest when the going is toughest.  Stewart, save for the opinion of a few loyal Sugarcreek-Shanesville supporters who followed the team to Columbus, was heavily favored to win the opening encounter on last night's program.  The Pirates took a 6-4 lead in the quarter, Ricker, Captain Sylvester Harmon and Logsdon doing the scoring.

They fell behind in the 2nd period and the intermission found Stewart out in front 13-9.  The 3rd chukker saw the Raiders steadily gain a commanding lead and they led at the end of the period 19-16.  The scoring spree of the losers carried over into the 1st five minutes of the final session and they were out in front 25-16 before the determined Pirates began to whack away at the point-mountain in their brilliant rally.  Burkey, the sharpshooter, wasn't hitting with his customary accuracy and wisely refrained from excessive shooting, feeding the ball to his teammates.  Harmon and Wassem each made 3 field goals, but Wassem was high scorer with 9 points.  Every member of the team broke into the scoring column and each was an important cog in the machine that clicked so smoothly late in the contest.

A lot of our old friends are here at the tournament.  Earl (Monk) Gross, New Philadelphia, is one of the 4 referees.  Three officials handle each game, while the 4th rests.  County Superintendent of Schools, Charles Barthelmeh, member of the State Board of Control of the State Athletic Association, was among the rooters for the Pirates.  So were Principal W.E. Laws and Head Coach Pilkington of Midvale; Ernie Godfrey former Doverite and now Freshman Coach at Ohio State and Howard (Red) Maurer, Dover, coach at Washington C.H. of Fayette County.

NOTE:  PIRATES FACE TOUGH FOE IN OSTRANDER - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates were scheduled with Ostrander in the upper bracket Class B semi-final this afternoon.  The contest will start at 2PM.  Ostrander last night eliminated the crack North Canton quint 30-29 through the brilliant individual performance of Freshwater, who scored 19 points and will be a hard man for the Pirates to stop.  Freshwater is big and fast, a good shot and a superb dribbler.  Individually, he was the sensation of the tourney games last night.
