29 - Gnaden Drops Sugarcreek 22-8 (2-22-29)

DOVER - The Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) held the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (0-1) scoreless the entire last half to grab a 22-8 decision in the 2nd meeting of teams in the tournament.  It was by far the toughest contest with players rolling here and there continually over the Legion playing court.  A total of 23 personal fouls were called by Referee Wieck.  However, Bahler was the only man ousted by the personal foul ruling.

Through the 1st half, despite the roughness the game was intersting.  The Pirates managed 2 points on fouls in the 1st period against Gnaden's 4 points that came on a basket and a pair of fouls, the period ending 4-2.  The 2nd quarter saw Sugarcreek count 6 additional points on a field goal and 4 fouls, while the Indians counted only 5 points, the score at half time being 9-8.  Captain guard Alvin Williams and his Crimson and Grey playmates played a great defensive game in the last half, but Sugarcreek at the same time played ragged offensive ball.  Ben Schreiner, center,  was by far the outstanding star.  He scored 9 of his team's points on 3 field goals and as many foul tosses.  Guard, Gerber, led the Pirates with 4 points and forward B. Hostetler and guard Bahler both punched in 2 points each.  Besides the 9 points scored by Schreiner, forward Ed Riley had 6 points and Alvin Williams swished 4, while forward Ray Blickensderfer contributed 3 more points to close out the Indian scoring.

DOVER - Port Washington was eliminated in the 1st game of the tournament.  A lopsided contest in which the Strasburg Tigers (1-0) defeated the Port Washington Eagles (0-1) by 25 points in the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament at Legion Hall Friday afternoon.

Strasburg led all the way and Head Coach Young substituted freely in the last quarter.  The Tigers led at the half 22-5 after having held an advantage throughout the initial 2 periods.  The 1st quarter ended 14-3 with Strasburg on the long end, mainly because of the shootingof Junior Fred Mears and Senior Art Miller, Tiger forwards.  Senior center Wayne Myers consistently outjumped Junior center Jim Decker and Sophomore center Cliff Welsch of Port Washington.  Welsch replaced Decker in the 1st quarter after Decker had committed 3 personal fouls.  Port's biggest fault in the 1st half was failure to shoot.  Time after time the ball was worked into close range, but Port was held back by defensive men.  Port's only score in the 2nd quarter came just before the period was up when Junior forward Earl Wheeland dropped in a field goal from the corner.  The 3rd period ended 31-9 with Strasburg still in front.  Wheeland of the Eagles was ejected from the game shortly after the start of the 2nd half on personal fouls.

29 - Weaker Meet Stronger Teams In Local Tournament

DOVER (Dover Canal) - With weaker teams paired to meet the stronger in opening rounds indicating that semi-final and final play will be replete with thrills, expectations are that the Tuscarawas County Class B cage tourney to be held Friday and Saturday at Legion auditorium will be the best ever.  Initial play in the tournament will begin Friday at 1PM when the Strasburg Tigers and Port Washington Purple Riders clash.  Following that game at 2PM, the Gnadenhutten Indians will collide with the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates.  At 3PM the game of Friday afternoon will be  played between the Dundee Bulldogs and the Bolivar Cardinals.  Doors for the afternoon session will open at 12 noon.

On Friday evening at 7PM the Tuscarawas Broncos and Baltic Eagles will clash.  Midvale Blue Devils will be pitted against the Mineral City Tigers' undefeated team in the Friday night tourney final which begins at 8PM.  Doors for the evening session open at 6PM.  Semi-finals will be started on Saturday afternoon with the winner of the Dundee-Bolivar fracas meeting the winner of the Tuscarawas-Baltic contest.  The game will start at 1PM.  Following that at 2PM the winner of the Midvale-Mineral City game will take on the winner of the 4 who battled in the 2 opening brackets which perhaps will be Gnadenhutten.  However, it could be Strasburg, Sugarcreek or Port Washington.

The finals will be played at 8PM on Saturday and the 2 teams who battle in the final game will be eligible for competition in the District tournaments at the Legion Hall on March 2nd.  Each team in the tourney has certified a list of 14 eligible players to the tournament head, Ralph Lohrman, Principal of Strasburg High School.  Because only 10 players can be used in the tourney; however, 4 of that list will have to be checked off before the meet starts.

According to an announcement from H.R. Townsend, of Columbus, Commissioner of Ohio High School Athletics, schools whose enrollment is under 70 may use 2 grade pupils on  their teams provided the pupils are 15 years of age and are either in the 7th or 8th grade.  Teams entered in the tourney will not be permitted on the Legion court in uniform until 15 minutes before the game in which they participate is to start.  Teams may use the floor; however, between halves of other games,  providing they are next in order of play.

At the close of the tournament, The Daily Reporter silver cup will be presented to the tourney winner and at the same time a trophy by the Daily Times, of New Philadelphia, will be presented to the Mineral City Tigers, winner of the Class B League, whos season has just closed.

29 - Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball League All-Stars 1928-29

DOVER - With the finish of the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball League which finds the Mineral City Tigers resting on top of the heap undefeated, The Daily Reporter presents its 1st and 2nd mythical All-County quintets.  The task of selecting a 1st Team of 5 members from the 10 teams in the county loop this year is not the job it has been in former seasons, because of the number of players who are outstanding.  However, the task of choosing a 2nd Team becomes more complicated as one delves into the performances of others who have also been more or less on the pinnacle of stardom at one time or another.

Mineral City places 2 men on the 1st Team, Bolivar 1, Gnadenhutten 1 and the other place goes to Midvale.  On the 2nd Team, 5 men have been chosen from the 5 best teams in the league, 1 each from Mineral City, Strasburg, Gnadenhutten, Baltic and Bolivar.  Elmer Harris, Mineral City forward, is chosen as the outstanding basketeer in the league and for that reason is given a forward berth and named Captain of the 1st Team.  His scoring  has been consistent all year and has led to many victories for the Mineral City Tigers.  He is a fine ball player and has a good eye.  Flanking Harris on the other forward is Smith, Midvale forward and star.  Although his team only finished 7th in the race, Smith is one of the best men Head Coach Roby of the Midvale crew has to depend on.  His skill at locating the basket is uncanny and his floor work has been remarkable.

Gene Gordon, scoring Mineral City center, is chosen to do the jumping for the 1st squad.  Gordon has scored more than any other center in the league and has not been held basketless all season.  He is a wonderful running mate for Harris and handles the ball in a free and easy manner.

Al Williams, Gnaden Captain and General, a scorer and a dribbler, is placed on one of the guard positions with Widder of Bolivar.  One can hardly find a pair of finer guards in the league than those two.  Widder is also a good scorer in addition to being a defensive man.

On the 2nd team Art Miller, of Strasburg and Cappel of Gnadenhutten, are the forwards.  Lash, of Bolivar, is named center, with Harlan Richardson of Baltic and Eyster, of Mineral City are the guards.

Following are the 2 teams and others who won honorable mention for the mythical outfits:

Elmer Harris, Mineral City Tigers - Forward
Smith, Midvale Blue Devils - Forward
Gene Gordon, Mineral City Tigers - Center
Al Williams, Gnadenhutten Indians - Guard

28 - Strasburg To Play Central Division Champions Marysville

STRASBURG - Head Coach Simukka is running his Strasburg Tigers (7-0) cage proteges through light drills this week to keep them in shape for the State Class B Tournament at Columbus next Friday and Saturday.  The Tigers were using the large American Legion floor for this week's practice sessions and Simukka is drilling his team mostly on breaking for the basket.  The team has been handicapped all season in learning to break, because of the brick walls at each end of the Strasburg floor.

The local Class B Champions get into 1st tournament action at Columbus on Friday at 1:30PM against Marysville, Champions of the Central Division.  According to tournament plans Class B games will be sandwiched between the more spectacular Class A struggles the 1st Class B game getting under way at 9AM Friday between Oberlin High School and the fast Muskingum Academy quintet from New Concord.  Canton McKinley who  drew East Liverpool for their opening encounter, will get into action at 8:30PM on Friday.

28 - Strasburg Wins Eastern Ohio District Basketball Championship (3-3-28)

DOVER - The plucky Strasburg Tigers (7-0) is going after the State Ohio Class B Basketball Championship at Columbus on March 16 and 17.  On virture of their last quarter one point 19-18 victory over the Cadiz High School Cardinals of Harrison County in the final game of the Eastern District Class B Basketball Tournament here last Saturday afternoon.  The select Tuscarawas County quintet are not only Tuscarawas County Champions of their District, but have a chance to make themselves the best cage team in the State of Ohio.  In one of the most thrilling, exciting and best defensive games of the tourney, the Tigers proved their rare abililty in taking over the Cadiz Cardinals.

But, it was the shooting of one man, flashy Senior guard Pal Neidenthal that won the Eastern District for them.  Neidenthal sewed up the contest with a beautiful long shot with only 2 minutes left to play.  The shot too away what would have been an 18-17 victory for the Cardinals.  And not only did Neidenthal win with one shot, but his shooting of 3 long shots all from the same locality, was the outstanding feature of the final tourney play.  The game was a teeter-tooter affair.  It was in doubt from the starting of the 2nd period until the final crack of Ike Truley's pistol.  It was close throughout.  Just as close as the final score indicates.  Both teams battled fiercely and played wonderful defense.  Strasburg led at the end of the 1st quarter 5-2 and that was the biggest gap that separated the 2 teams at any time.

Cadiz started hitting the hoop a little better in the 2nd period and managed to go in front and led Strasburg by a count of 8-6 at the end of the 1st half.  They continued scoring in the 3rd quarter, but Strasburg also started hitting the hoop again and Cadiz was leading by a score of 16-13 when the 2 teams finished the 3rd lap of the race.  Then in the last quarter, Senior guard Clyde Denzer and Senior forward Orval Deems swished baskets for the Tigers that gave them a 17-16 lead.  Ralph Martin got away under his own basket with an action shot with only 3 minutes to play and gave the Cardinals the lead of 18-17.  It looked then like Strasburg would have to be content with being merely runner-up in the tournament.

But, with only 2 minutes to play, Neidenthal drove through the Cadiz team for a moment, took a good aim and then let it fly with the winning shot.  From then Strasburg "froze" the ball and kept Cadiz trying to get possession of it.  Neidenthal was the outstanding star for his team with Senior center Sundheimer, Senior forward Bob Miller and Denzer, in fact everyone of them, following closely with the same brand of basketball.  Deems' defensive play in holding Lucas, star black forward of the Cadiz team, scoreless in the 2nd half after Denzer had allowed him 2 baskets in the 1st two periods, with excellent work.  Miller cut the cords with an action shot for Strasburg in the 1st half, while Sundheimer struck for 2 from  the field.  Denzer had a lot of tough luck with his shots in the 2nd period, but he managed to get 1 in the last half from a corner.  Lucas was the outstandig star for Cadiz with B. Martin, center, running a close second.  Lucas in 2 previous games had scored 37 points.  The largest crowd of the tournament which lasted Friday and Saturday, witnessed the game.  The Dover Concert Band and cheering of the rival schools gave added color to a great contest.

TOURNEY SHOTS

@In choosing the forwards one would have to select from a group of at least 7 who starred for there respective teams.  Among those 7 were Lucas of Cadiz, Kinney and Saad of Sacred Hearts, Deems and Miller of Strasburg, Hresho and Ullstrum of Mingo Junction.  Everyone of them have natural ability.

@The center positions were alloted after playing of the men had been compared.  Price of Dundee, Sundheimer of Strasburg, Ralph Martin of Cadiz, Kiefer of Sacred Hearts and Schaefer of Mingo Junction were all considered.

@The absence of guard material for the tournament team made the selection for those 2 positions hard.  Neidenthal of course is everyone's unanimous choice, Riggs of Mingo Junction, Haager of Dundee, Denzer of Strasburg, W. Bell of Millersburg, Kinney and Murphy of Sacred Hearts were taken into consideration.

@Enriched with an attractive silver basketball trophy on pedestal given by The Daily Reporter and another pedestal basketball given by The Ohio High School Athletic Association to the Strasburg High School went home to a big celebration.  The Eastern District Class B Basketball Champions were heartily received everywhere.  Each individual member on the team carried or worn the silver medal awarded in recognition of his play with the champions.  The Tigers Band led a celebration in front of the Garver Store in Strasburg.

28 - Strasburg Trips Up Coshocton Sacred Heart 23-15 (3-3-28)

DOVER - In the semi-finals, the Strasburg Tigers and Coshocton Sacred Heart squared off in the 1st game, while Cadiz trounced Holmesville 41-14 in the 2nd game.  The Strasburg High School Tigers (6-0) kept the Tuscarawas County in the Eastern District Class B Cage Tournament Saturday morning winning its contest 23-15 from Sacred Heart Catholic High School of Coshocton.  Strasburg led all the way and the strong Orange and Black defense coupled with its offensive attack of Seniors forward Orval Deems, center Paul Sundheimer and forward Bob Miller brought home the bacon.  The uncanny shooting of "Dutch" Miller and Sundheimer placed the Strasburgers in the finals against Cadiz.  Miller amassed 9 points on 3 field goals and 3 foul shots, while Sundheimer had 4 field goals and 2 foul shots through the nets for 10 Strasburg points.  Deems and Senior guard Paul Neidenthal each counted actions shots for the balance of the points (4).

The Tigers' defense tied Saad and John Kinney in a knot.  The 2 Sacred Heart scoring aces managed only 10 points between them.  Strasburg's wonderful defense was much in evidence again Saturday morning through the 1st half of their game with Sacred Heart.  They held Sacred Heart's Saad and John Kinney scoreless and allowed only 1 field goal to the Coshocton aggregation.  Murphy counted that one which was from long range.  The score at half time was 13-3.  During the 1st quarter Miller swished the nets for 2 baskets for Strasburg, the 1st the Tuscarawas County All-Tournament forward has registered.  Sundheimer scored 3 field goals and a foul shot to make up the remainder of Strasburg's 13 points.  Very seldom in the initial quarter was Coshocton given any easy shots.  They resorted to their long range guns with inaccurate ability, several shots going over and under the backboard.

Strasburg had a hard time from the foul line, Miller and Sundheimer missing a total of 8 shots before the latter finally swished the cords with one of the "gifts."  The Tigers held sway over the Coshocton County Catholics 6-0 at the end of the 1st quarter.  Sundheimer had scored 1 fielder and Miller a pair of action shots.  In the 2nd half Sundheimer started the ball with a pair of fielders then Neidenthal made Strasburg 12.  Sundheimer annexed a foul for 13 when 2 minutes were left to play.  Then  Saad caged a foul and Murphy bounced a long shot through the net.  Sacred Heart started out like a whiz in the 2nd half, but their spurt was not lasting.  They climbed from 3 to 9 in no time, but Strasburg soon got its bearings again and continued from then on to secure the win.  The 3rd period ended 18-10 with Strasburg in front.

28 - Cadiz's Foul Shots Dooms Dundee 32-28 (3-2-28)

DOVER - On Friday night, Coshocton Sacred Heart edged Millersburg 25-24 and the Cadiz Cardinals took on the Dundee Bulldogs.  Valiant little Dundee (3-2) gave Cadiz plenty to worry about in the 2nd game.  Marvelous foul pitching by the Cardinals quintet was all that gave the Harrison County boys a 32-28 win.  After trailing 10-5 at the end of the 1st quarter, Head Coach Kohr's scrappy outfit managed to gain 17 points to 16 for Cadiz by the end of the half.  There were plenty in the crowd who believed Dundee had the game "in" when the 2nd half started.  But Hauger, guard and Senior Glen Wilds, forward, were put out of the game because of personal fouls.  Their absence weakened Dundee so much that Cadiz shot out front shortly before the end of the 3rd quarter.  In the last quarter the Cardinals outplayed the Bulldogs considerably.

But, Dundee had plenty to crow about.  The team smashed through the Cadiz offense considerably and forced all Cardinal men, with the exception of Lucas, to pass and shoot wildly much of the time.  Lucas was the outstanding Cadiz player, caging 4 of his team's 6 field goals and pitching 9 out of 10 from the foul line.  The officials called 29 fouls on Dundee.  Cadiz tossed in 20 of their 29 foul shots.  Dundee's center, Lester Price and Lucas were tied for scoring honors with 17 points each.

@Brave little Dundee bested Cadiz as far as floorwork and field goal shooting was concerned, but the Harrison County lads and especially "Powder" Lucas won the local tournament entry on Friday night.

@Dundee was in the battle to win.  And they went a whole lot further in the tournament than many gave them credit for.  Then their hearts being in play in an attempt to win their 2nd game caused their defeat for officials Gross and Wieck called 29 fouls on them.

@There were a lot of Dover fans who went home with a frog in their throat either Friday afternoon after the Strasburg victory or Friday night after Dundee had played such a wonderful game against Cadiz.

@Lester Price, Dundee's "dead-eye" center scored enough field goals to beat Cadiz lonehanded Friday night if the latter team had not tossed in 20 foul shots.

@John Kinney, Coshocton Sacred Heart forward, is the shortest plasyer in the tournament.

28 - Strasburg Clips Mingo Junction 17-16 (3-2-28)

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers (5-0), Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Champions after drawing a bye in the initial round, Friday afternoon defeated Mingo Junction 17-16 in an overtime 2nd round game.  It was a wonderful victory for the Franklin-Township tossers and placed them in the semi-finals on Saturday morning.  Displaying one of the best defenses that any team in the tournament has shown, Strasburg held the Mingo crowd of cagemen from the beginning and Senior Orval Deems, elongated forward and captain of the Tigers, placed his team in the running and into victory by his clever shooting.  He garnered 5 shots from action for a 10-point total.  The game was the 3rd in the afternoon program and was played before the largest crowd that witnessed any tourney game the entire day.  Dover students and citizens amassed at the end of the floor, turned for Strasburg and helped cheer them to victory.

Strasburg grabbed an early lead and lost it twice, once in the 1st quarter and again in the final period when things looked bad for the Franklin-Township five.  Senior Bob Miller scored a foul sto start the game, then Mingo center Schaefer went under for his only field goal on the Tigers' center, Paul Sundheimer.  Deems swished the nets from close range to give Strasburg a 3-2 lead, but Mingo's guard Riggs was fouled by Miller and he tossed a pair of foul shots as the quarter ended 4-3, Mingo.  In the 2nd quarter Strasburg's Senior guard Paul Neidenthal hit a long shot to give the Tigers the lead , then Deems scored a pair under the basket and gave Strasburg a lead of 9-4.

At the start of the 3rd quarter Neidenthal dropped in another long one for Strasburg, then Schaefer caged a foul and Coen tied the count at 11 all with a fielder from mid-court.  Mingo's forward, Ullstrum, went under his basket to give Mingo Junction a 2 point lead as the 3rd quarter ended.  Ullstrum kept the ball rolling for Mingo in the 4th period and gave them a 4 point lead at the start.  Deems; however, with a beautiful overhand shot from back of the foul line, made Strasburg 13 when there were 10 minutes left to play.  Another basket by Deems which came when he tipped one into the hoop after someone had missed a long shot, tied the count at 15 all when there was only 37 seconds to play.  Ullstrum was fouled by Neidenthal in the overtime period and made a foul to give Mingo a 16-15 lead.  Sundheimer's only basket of the game was the winning one for the Strasburgers.  It came after 2 minutes had been played in the allotted 3 minutes of overtime.  He was near the backboard and tipped the ball in as 2 men were on his shoulders.
