28 - All Tournament Teams 1928
DOVER - Although there were 80 players participating in the Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament held Friday and Saturday in the New Philadelphia Junior High School gymnasium, the task of selecting a mythical tournament quintet composed of the 5 outstanding players is by no means an easy job. In previous seasons the writer has selected what has been known as 2 All-County Class B teams. Players placed on both of those teams were given their positions after a careful scrutiny of their play during the regular season schedule in the Class B League and in the annual tournament games.
However, this season 3 teams are chosen. One is to be known as an All-Tournament team and the other 2 as All-County fives. The reason 3 teams are chosen and one is known as All-Tourney, is because the writer believes many of the players performed better in the tournament games than they did during the regular playing season, while others, outstanding at their respective positions during the regular schedule, did not do so good in the tourney. Others who performed mightily in the tourney and helped their team into the finals can hardly be left off the all-tourney team, but because of the fact that they were not regulars during the regular playing season, can not be placed on the all-county aggregation. Bob Miller, flashy forward with the champion Strasburg quintet, is an example of a player who played wonderful basketball in the tournament, but who does not warrant a place on the all-county team beause he was used as a substitute during most of the games on the Strasburg schedule. However, Miller was used by Head Coach Simukka in all 4 of Strasburg's tournament games and to a good advantage.
It was the playing of Miller in Strasburg's 3rd tournament meeting with Bolivar that enabled the Franklin-Township team to enter the finals against the Dundee Bulldogs. In the game with the Bolivar Cardinals, Miller pulled the Strasburgers out of the fire with amazing shots and played a wonderful floor game, both from an offensive and defensive viewpoint. He continued in the final game and although well guarded by Hauger, of Dundee, caged 2 action shots for the Tigers. His play won him a berth as 1 forward on the mythical tournament team. The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirate team was eliminated in the 1st tournament game, but 1 forward on the Sugarcreek-Township quintet is placed on the tournament team with Miller. That forward is Moomaw. Although, Moomaw did not score more than 1 field basket, he was closely guarded by Widder and Zutavern of the Bolivar squad. He played a good floor game and started most of the Sugarcreek plays. With Moomaw and Miller on the forwards, the all-tournament team is pretty well equipped with scoring men. It also is equipped with a pair of forwards who can dig the ball out and who play good defensive ball.
Now comes the question of the center berth. Lester Price, of Dundee, and Paul Sundheimer of Strasburg, are the pair from which the center must be chosen. Harry Williams, Gnadenhutten center, is also given some consideration. Price carried his team through the 1st tournament game against Midvale and scored 27 of his teams points. He also did a great deal to assist his team in beating Gnaden in the 2nd game, but his work in the final against Sundheimer of Strasburg was miserably poor. Sundheimer performed excellently against Price, made 3 to the latter's 1 made him play harder than Price ever played before this season. Sundheimer was also a gun in the 3 other victories and for that reason is given the center berth on the tournament quintet. The work of Price; however, in regular season games will award him a position on the all-county five. He outplayed Sundheimer in both of the meetings between Strasburg and Dundee before the tournament, or at least, he scored more points. Strasburg; however, won both encounters from the Dundee team during the regular season of play. At 1 guard on the all-tourney quintet is Zutavern, Bolivar's outstanding player. His achivements during the tournament was many. Zutavern played wonderfully for the Lawrence-Township crew scoring scoring most of the team's points in 2 games and being the only Bolivar player to score against Strasburg in the 2nd round. Zutavern was always in the game. He followed in shots like no other player who took part in the tourney and had the ball himself nearly all the time Bolivar had possession of it.
Paul Neidenthal, Strasburg guard, is the other selection. The diminutive lad, who has a bad leg, played some of the best defensive ball of the tourney and in the final game besides holding his forward scoreless, dropped in 3 field goals through the nets for the Tigers. His playing easily warrented him a position on the tournament team.

Now The All-County Selections:
Orval Deems and Moomaw, of Strasburg and Sugarcreek-Shanesville , respectively, are the choices for forward positions. Deems' play during the regular season was the outstanding feature of Strasburg play. It is the 2nd year he has placed on an all-county team. Moomaw, although he made the all-tournament team too, can hardly be left off the county quintet. Lester Price of Dundee is awarded the center job. Alvin Williams, Gnadenhutten's outstanding guard and Stan Miller outstanding defensive man of Sugarcreek-Shanesville's team are the guard selections. Miller was given some consideration for a berth on the all-tourney team, but was overshadowed by Paul Neidenthal in the final game of the meet.
