58 - Basketball Snowflakes From 1958

DOVER - Basketball season has been over for a week now and the cage togs have been put into the mothballs until another season rolls around.

But at the meeting of the County Coaches and Superintendents at Tuscarawas High School, the question of rotating the District Tournament between Brilliant and Dover came up.

And according to County Superintendent W.E. Laws, schools in the Ohio River area have voiced some displeasure over playing on the Memorial Hall floor every other year.  Most of the schools in that area, as well as the schools in the Tuscarawas County system, have large floors and sometimes the jump from the small District floor at Dover to the spacious hardwoods at Canton Memorial Fieldhouse for the regionals is just too much to cope with.

An impromptu vote of the county coaches was taken at the meeting and dissatisfaction over the setup was evidenced.

The decision still is up to the District Board which will select tournament sites sometime next Fall.  But, if the subject making the tourney an annual event at Brilliant comes up, Supt. Laws no doubt will voice the opinions of County Coaches.

It is never too late to amend the present Memorial Hall's small court problem, but in the past Dover voters have said nix.  But the day may come when Dover High School will have trouble arranging home games.  Then perhaps there'll be some concerted action.

58 - Basketball Snowflakes From 1958

DOVER - A few last-minute entries before closing the 1957-58 cage record book.

Never before in the State Tournament has the 2 title winners (Class A and AA) finished unbeaten.  East Tech had 26 straight and Northwestern 29.  But Middletown, whose unbeaten skein ended at 76, was undefeated in winning the 2 previous Class AA togas.

East Tech became the 1st Cleveland city school to cop the coveted Championship and Northwestern gave Wayne County its 1st crown.

Columbus North recorded the biggest upset by ending Middletown's streak.

Dover's Al Veigel and Uhrichsville's Jordan Besozzi were among those who officiated during the playoffs.  George Ellis of Akron, who works several Dover High School tilts every season, also helped call'em.

Frank Truitt, Columbus North's Head Coach, says he'll stay there, spiking rumors he was eyeing a job at Otterbein College.

58 - Basketball Snowflakes From 1958

The Tuscarawas Broncos 6-4 Senior Terry Deems accepts the 1955 League "Most Valuable Player Award"

The Gnadenhutten Indians 5-10 Senior Forward Eldon Miller accepts the 1957 "Most Valuable Player Award."

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO - Terry Deems of Tuscarawas and Eldon Miller of Gnadenhutten closed out the basketball season as starters on the Wittenberg Tigers College Team.  The Tigers won 19 of 22 games and finished with a 14-1 Ohio Conference record.

Deems paced the squad with 428 points.  He established a 3-year Wittenberg scoring mark of 1,238 points.  Deems wound up 4th in the nation in field goal percentage, hitting 170 of 288 attempts for 59 percent.  He also paced the Conference in scoring and rebounding, finishing with averages of 19.5 and 14.7 respectively.

Miller became a starter midway in the season and held the spot the rest of the campaign.  The former All-Ohioan finished the season as the Tiger's 5th leading scorer with 110 points in 19 tilts.  Outstanding on defense, Eldon Miller picked off 79 rebounds despite his 5-10 frame.

Terry Deems, a Junior and Miller a Freshman, will be returning to Wittenberg next season to aid former Dover High School player, Head Coach Ray Mears, in his quest for an Ohio Conference Crown.  Mears has a 2-year record of 34 wins and 9 losses.  He has won 18 straight at home.

58 - Basketball Snowflakes From 1958

Tuscarawas Broncos Center Terry Deems as shown in 1955.

DOVER - Terry Deems, who played for the Tuscarawas Broncos, is Tuscarawas' contribution to college basketball and Wittenberg College in particular, continues to be one of the "hottest" cagers in Ohio.  Deems, who only Saturday was named recipient of the Ohio Conference's Mike Gregory Award as the outstanding player in the loop, was for the 2nd straight year voted by his teammates as the Most Valuable Player on the Tiger team which is mentored by Head Coach Ray Mears, former Dover High School Ace.

Deems, incidentally, is the 2nd Junior to win the award originated 2 years ago by the late Mike Gregory of Granville.  Lenny Nelson of Muskingum was last year's choice.  The personable, quiet 6-4 Forward has been the big noise in his conference and won All-Conference and Honorable Mention Little All-American Honors last year and has been placed on one news service's All-Conference Quintet.

Terry, while playing for Tuscarawas High School, twice was named to the All-County Team, sponsored by The Daily Reporter and in his Senior year reached the highest goal a county high school player can achieve when he was voted "The Most Valuable Player Award" by the coaches.  But next season, which is Deems' last in a Tiger uniform, should prove to be his best ever, for with each season he has improved over his previous year's performance.

Coach Mears also has announced the Tigers' 1957-58 All-Opponent Team:

Climon Lee (Akron) Guard
Bob Anderson (Ohio University) Guard
Mike Outcalt (Capital) Center
Bob Peters (Ohio University) Forward
Hank Morano (St. Peters) Forward

DOVER - Former Tuscasrawas Basketball Ace, Terry Deems, was named the recipent of the Ohio Conference's Mike Gregory Award as the outstanding player in the Ohio Basketball Conference chosen by coaches and sports publicists.

Deems gathered twice as many votes as runner-up Mike Outcalt of Capital University.  This award is based on all-around basketball excellence, scoring, rebounding, team leadership, spirit and sportsmanship.

He scored 428 points this year for Wittenberg College for an average of 19.5 in 22 games and averaged 14.7 rebounds.  He accounted for 170 field goals in 288 attempts for a shooting average of 59 percent, 4th best in the nation among small colleges.

DOVER - The Gnadenhutten Indians, who advanced to the District Basketball Tournament before bowing out, will only have one veteran back for next season.  He is Junior Forward Ron Bradley who picked up 32 points during the tournament and of which was his 1st year on the team for a 10.7 point average.  He was also All-County.

Head Coach Dick Scott will have to go a long way to find capable replacements for Guard Ed Shull, Center Tom Roth, Guard Larry Clark (All-County) and Forward Larry Gooding.  Also graduating will be 6th man Alvin Cappell, Steve Hamilton and Tom Frank.  (From RIGHT DOWN THE LINE with Norm Singleton "Sports Editor")

58 - Basketball Snowflakes From 1958

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO - Terry Deems tallied 26 poinst here on Wednesday night to set a new team scoring mark and led Wittenberg to an 87-47 Ohio Conference victory over Heidelberg in the final game of the season for both teams.

Deems broke his team's 3-year scoring mark with a total of 1,238 points for the season.  The previous mark was set in 1955 by Jack Hawken.  Wittenberg hitting 50 percent of their shots, jumped to an early lead and mustered a 40-19 margin at intermission.

The winners finished the season with a 19-3 overall record and a 14-1 mark in the Ohio Conference.  Heidelberg came up with a 7-13 season mark and a 6-10 League showing.

58 - Basketball Snowflakes From 1958

DOVER - Strasburg which just a couple of years back selected Ken Newlon, former Stone Creek Head Coach and present Canton Lincoln mentor, to be basketball Head Coach when Don Martin resigned, may hire another Stone Creek mentor.

We understand that Ed McGlumphy has been offered the Tiger post.  His acceptance would relieve Head Coach Chuck Caniford from the cage job and enable him to devote full time to his first love...football.

Ed has done wonders at Stone Creek, which is the smallest school in the county in number of boys enrolled.  Under McGlumphy's tutelage.  Rod Reinhart won an award as the Most Valuable Player in the County League for the season just closed.  He also was the county's leading Class A scorer.  A year ago MGlumphy had another outstanding performer in Ron Deibel.  (From RIGHT DOWN THE LINE With Norm Singleton)

58 - Gnaden Falls To Powhatan 65-61 (3-5-58)

The Gnadenhutten Indians' 6-1 Senior Guard Tom Roth (77) eludes 6-4 Senior Forward Jaron Knight (55) of the Powhatan Indians to swish a one-handed hook shot during the 2nd frame of last night's District Basketball Tournament contest at Brilliant.  Senior 6-0 Center Larry Gooding (66) of the Indians of Gnaden, 5-7 Senior Forward Bob Brown (50) of the Indians of Powhatan are in rebound positions, while 5-9 Senior Forward Larry Clark (33) of Gnaden is at the left.  Knight scored 16 points in the last canto and 32 during the game to lead Powhatan to the win over the Tribesmen of Gnadenhutten.  (Photo...By Bob Fisher of The Daily Times)

BRILLIANT - Tuscarwas County's last tournament contender, the Gnadenhutten Indians, were shunted to the sidelines last night in absorbing a 65-61 loss in a spine-tingling District battle with the Powhatan Indians at Brilliant.  Holmes County's entry, the Big Prairie-Lakeville Bulldogs, also was eliminated by a 72-54 loss to the Dillonvale Night Riders.  Both victims had advanced to Brilliant from the Dover Sectional Tournament.  Powhatan and Dillonvale will collide on Friday night for a berth in the Regional event at Canton next week.

The Gnadenhutten Indians (5-2) (6-2) (19-7) literally were robbed of victory by the Powhatan Indians (19-6).  Leading 61-59 with 1:05 remaining, Gnadenhutten saw 6-4 Senior forward Jaron Knight, who was a big factor in the Indians of Powhatan win, hit on a jump shot.  He was fouled in the process and cashed the free throw to put his Tribe ahead 62-61.  Seconds later 5-9 Junior guard Carrington Price made the lead 63-61 with another single free throw.

With 55 seconds left, Head Coach Dick Scott of Gnaden called for time.  When play was resumed, Gnadenhutten took the ball down the floor and began to stall for the last shot which, if successful, would have tied the score.  But 5-7 Senior forward Lou Brown, playing an alert game for Powhatan, stole the ball from Gnaden's 5-9 Senior forward Larry Clark and tossed it to Price, who whipped it through the nets to ice the decision.

Not since the 1st white man set foot into the Ohio Valley has there been such a skirmish as the 2 Tribesmen staged.  There never was more than 7 points separating the 2 quintets.  The Scarlet and Gray of Gnaden several times being ahead that many and the count was tied 8 times.  The Gnadenhutten Indians held quarter leads of 20-15, 36-35 and 50-43, but finally gave way before the Powhatan Indians' repeated thrusts.

The 2 biggest reasons for the Powhatan Tribesmen's triumph were Knight, whose height enable him to score 14 points in the final period when mates consistently fed him the ball and Price, who hounded Gnaden's Clark for 4 quarters and limited the usually high-scoring all-countian to 12 points.  Gnaden, which usually hit 50 percent on its field shots, had an off night in that department, sinking only 26 of 73 shots for 35.6 percent.

On the other hand Powhatan took only 53 shots from the floor and tallied on 28 for 52.8 percent.  It hit on 9 of 14 free throws, while Gnaden tallied on 9 of 16.  The 1st quarter saw Gnadenhutten exhibit top-notch ball when it tallied on 9 of 18 shots from the field.  Forward 6-0 Senior Larry Gooding hit on a layup shot early in the period to make the score 4-2 and the Tribe rushed on to a 20-15 margin by the time the canto ended.

The Powhatan Indians finally tied the game at 27-27 with 3:55 remaining in the 2nd stanza when 6-0 Sophomore guard Jan Saner notched a free throw after Brown had scored on a set shot.  But a short time later Clark tallied on his accurate off-balance jump try from the corner to put the Indians of Gnaden ahead.  Two free throw tries by Knight tied the score before 5-8 Senior guard Ed Shull notched for the Tribe of Gnaden making the score 31-29.  Goals by Knight and Price and one by Tom Roth of Gnaden tied the game at 33-33.

Then Saner put the Ohio Valley Indians into the lead 35-33 on a jumper.  But a free throw by Roth and a jump shot by 5-11 Junior forward Ron Bradley gave Gnaden a 36-35 lead at halftime.  Both clubs were inaccurate in the 3rd stanza, but Gnadenhutten managed to forge to a 7-point, 50-43 lead by outscoring Powhatan 14 to 8.

With time running out Powhatan began to feed Knight early in the final frame and the lanky cager came through with 8 straight points before Gnaden could score and Powhatan led 51-50 with 5:45 remaining.  From there the lead changed hands 7 times before Gnaden went ahead 61-59 with 1:05 remaining.  The rest "as they say" is history.

Knight led all scorers with 13 field goals and 6 free throw tosses for 32 points, while Saner tallied 17.  Leading Gnaden was Ron Bradley with 9 field goals and 2 from the charity line for 20 points, while 6-1 Senior center Tom Roth added 14 and Clark 12.

58 - 2nd Best Teams At District?

BRILLIANT - The Stage is set for the District Class A Basketball Tournament at Brilliant tonight and carrying the Dover Sectional Tournament's colors into the warfare will be the supposedly "2nd best" teams, the Gnadenhutten Indians and the Big Prairie-Lakeville Bulldogs.  Those 2 clubs were rated behind the Midvale Blue Devils and the Berlin Black Panthers in pre-tournament forecasting, but they came on to upset the heavy favorites.

The Indians finished 2nd to the Blue Devils in the Tuscarawas County League race and also was runner-up to the same club in the county playoffs.  But, then Gnaden turned the tables by eliminating the Diablos 80-67 in the Sectional Tournament.  The Bulldogs were tied with the Walnut Creek Cardinals for 2nd place behind the Black Panthers in the Holmes County League.  Big Prairie-Lakeville then lost to Berlin in the county playoff finals, but then ousted Berlin in the Sectional.

The Bulldogs of Big Prairie-Lakeville engages the Dillonvale Night Riders in the 7:00 opener at Brilliant, while the Tribesmen of Gnadenhutten collides with the Powhatan Indians at 8:45.  Head Coach Dick Scott of Gnaden probably will stick with his usual starting Indians.  They are 5-9 Larry Clark and 5-8 Ed Shull, in the guard positions, 5-11 Ron Bradley and 6-0 Larry Gooding the forwards and 6-1 Tom Roth at center.  Bradley is a Junior  and the others are all Seniors.

This is the 2nd straight year the Tribe had made the District Tournament.  Last year it losst to the Midvale Blue Devils in the finals.  They are hoping to make it all the way this season with the Canton Regional Tournament as the next goal.  Head Coach Robert E. Lee of Big Prairie-Lakeville probably will start 5-10 Senior Vaughn Flinner, 5-10 Senior Dave Miller at the guard positions with 5-11 Senior Wayne DeWitt and 5-9 Sophomore Ken Bauer at the forwards and 6-0 Sophomore Dan Dye at center.

CLASS AA.  In the District Tournament at Martins Ferry, Zanesville's mighty Blue Devils will tangle with Toronto at 8:00.  The Blue Devils are ranked 3rd in the State by Associated Press writers have won 20 straight contests.  The Cadiz Cardinals' 92-72 winner over the New Philadelphia Quakers in the finals of the Dennison Sectional Tournament, will battle the Tiltonsville Ramblers in their District opener tomorrow night.

58 - District Basketball Tournament

BRILLIANT - The Gnadenhutten Indians yesterday tested the District Tournament battleground at Brilliant and were to finish applying the warpaint at their homeland today.  Tomorrow night the Indians will head a large war party invasion of the Ohio river country for a big skirmish with another tribe, namely the Powhatan Indians.  The 2 Indian tribes will clash on the Brilliant court at 8:45, following the opening game at 7:00 between the Big Prairie-Lakeville Bulldogs of Holmes County and the Dillonvale Night Riders.

Gnadenhutten, winner of 19 of 25 games and Big Prairie-Lakeville (18-6), emerged as Co-Champions of the Dover Sectional Tournament, while Powhatan (16-5) and Dillonvale (19-6) copped the Sectional Tournament at St. Clairsville.  The Powhatan Tribesmen, mentored by Head Coach Jim Campbell, earned their shot by squeezing past the Conotton Valley Rockets 74-72 in a thrilling overtime on Friday night.

Spark-plugged by the high-scoring Jaron Knight, 6-4 Senior pivot ace, Powhatan lost 3 of 5 games to Class AA opponents, while dropping a pair of verdicts to the touted Bethel Blackhawks.  The Shadyside Tigers chalked up 71-64 and 59-52 decisions over Powhatan, while the Barnesville Shamrocks notched an 86-64 victory.  The Blackhawks, who were unbeaten last year until turned back in the State Tournament at Columbus, outscored the Indians 85-70 and 46-41.

Rounding out the usual starting array with Knight, who scored 25 points against Conotton Valley, are Senior guards 5-7 Lou Brown and 6-0 Joe Burchfield and forwards Jan Saner and Carrington Price.  Saner, a 6-0 Sophomore and Brown are the steadying influences on the quintet, while Price, a 5-9 Junior, is an expert at ballhandling and tricky floorwork.

Head Coach Dick Scott of Gnaden said the Indians will make the trip to Brilliant in private cars.  Brilliant, which alternates with Dover as the site for the District joust, is located south of Steubenville.  In tangling with Dillonvale, Big Prairie-Lakeville will be at a decided disadvantage in height.

Dillonvale's center, Rick Buroski, is a 6-2 Senior who has tallied 163 points.  The Bulldogs' opponents have lost 9 games over the season, but 7 were to Class AA opponents.  Included were losses of 67-45 and 70-69 to Cadiz.  They also dropped an 86-83 verdict to Barnesville.

The Jefferson County Tournament Champions gained the District berth by posting wins of 75-65 and 60-50 over the Freeport Raiders and Springfield Township Tigers.  Starting in front for Dillonvale will be two 5-10 Juniors, Jim Cdsario and Ken Civinski.  Cesasrio has tallied 188 points, while Civinski is 2nd highest on the squad with 363.

Pacing them at forward will be their high scorer Chuck Yanda, a 5-10 Senior who has totaled 456 points.  At the other forward will be Tom Haurner, a 6-2 Junior who has 358 markers to his credit.  Big Prairie-Lakeville's Head Coach Bob Lee, will be in a vengeful mood.  It was just 6 years ago, when Lee was in his 2nd year as coach at the Holmes County school, that his team was knocked off by Dillonvale in the District Tournament.  Incidentally, present Dover High School mentor Nick Vrotsos was then the Dillonvale Coach.

The Bulldog Five also are winding up preparations for the District trip with a home court workout today after playing on the bigger court at Shreve yesterday.  Winners of tomorrow night's games will return on Friday to battle it out for the right to advance to next week's Regional Tournament at the Canton Fieldhouse.

The 1958 Gnadenhutten Indians Senior 5-8 Guard Larry Clark dropped in 23 points leading the Indians to a 78-71 win over the Millersburg Knights on Saturday night.  Clark has 128 total points in 6 games for an average of 21.3 markers per game.  He has hit the 20 point mark in 4 of the 6 contests in tournament play and is as consistant a player as they come.  (Photo...1958 Yearbook)

BRILLIANT - The Gnadenhutten Indians are the lone Tuscarawas County Team still in tournament play.  The Indians sidelined the Millersburg Knights with a 78-71 victory in the finals of the Class A Sectional Basketball Tournament Saturday night at Dover's Memorial Hall.

In drawings held yesterday at Brilliant, which alternates with Dover as the site for the District meet, the Tribesmen of Gnaden drew the Powhattan Indians of Belmont County and one of the winners of the St. Clairsville Sectional Tournament.  They will play on Wednesday night at 8:45.  The other local Sectional Tournament winner, the Big Prairie-Lakeville Bulldogs of Holmes County, will tangle with the Dillonvale Night Riders of Jefferson County in the 7:00 opener.

Powhattan gained the District berth with a 74-72 victory over the Conotton Valley Rockets Friday night, while Dillonvale topped the Springfield Township Tigers 60-50 for the Brilliant trip.  The Brilliant winners will collide for the District Championship and the coveted berth in the Regional playoffs at Canton at 8 on Saturday night.

Head Coach Dick Scott's Gnadenhutten Indians (5-1) (6-2) (19-6) had to fight off a full court press in the 4th quarter to salvage the victory over the Millersburg Knights (11-8) and the District trip.  The Knights of Head Coach Joe Banks, went into the final canto with a deficit of 11 points, then went into a full court defense with 5 minutes remaining.  The strategy forced the Indians to the win in the final moments.

First quarter action saw Millersburg open strong and jumped to a lead of 6-3, before the Gnadenhutten got out their hatchets.  They went ahead 7-6 with 5 minutes remaining in the period as 5-8 Senior guard Ed Shull arched an action shot from the outside.  From that point Gnaden stayed in the lead for the remainder of the contest; although, being tied twice in the remaining minutes of the opening frame.  The Tribesmen spurted for 2 field goals and a free throw to close the quarter with a 23-15 lead.

In the next 2 periods the Spartans fought valiantly, but could not match the well-balanced attack of the Scarlet and Gray of Gnaden which had 5 starters in double figures.  Until the waning moments of the contest the closest the Millersburg Knights could cut the Gnadenhutten Indians' margin was 6 points with 2 minutes to be played in the 2nd stanza.  The Knights outgoaled the Indians 29-28, but lost at its free throw line.  Millersburg hit 13 times from there, while Gnadenhutten cashed 22, most of which came in the final canto when the Spartan players fouled to gain possession of the ball.

Pacing Gnaden was All-County 5-8 Senior forward Larry Clark and 5-11 Junior forward Ron Bradley.  Clark collected 8 field goals and 7 free throws for 23 points, while Bradley tallied 8 times from action shots for 16 points.  The well-balanced attack was rounded out by Shull's 14, 6-0 Senior center Tom Roth's 12 points and 6-1 Senior forward Larry Gooding's ll.

The Millersburg Knights were led by 5-9 Junior guard Gary High, who notched 21 points on 10 floor shots and one free throw toss.  Senior forward 5-9 Jim Shonk added 14 markers, 6-0 Sophomore center Karl Crandall 12 and 6-1 Senior guard Paul McCormick 10.
