41 - Midvale Falls To Canfield 44-36 (3-22-41)

COLUMBUS - Their quest for State Class B Basketball Honors ended with elimination in a semi-final game Saturday afternoon.  Head Coach Pete Wolfe and his Midvale Blue Devils (9-1) (21-6) returned to the classroom today.  The Blue Devils were defeated 44-36 by the Canfield Cardinals (25-4) which went into the final to lose to Glenford High School 48-28 in the title game.

Coach Wolfe and his team, winners of the Eastern Ohio District title at Dennison, will be guests of honor at the Annual Midvale High School Athletic Banquet which will be held at the school in April.

The team returned from Columbus yesterday after Calvin "Tod" Hostetler and Adrian "Ace" Ford were named members of the mythical All-Ohio teams picked by sports writers covering the tournament.  Hostetler was named at a guard position on the Class B 1st Team and Ford was accorded a forward post on the 2nd Team.

Forward Chet McPhee, All-Ohio on the Canfield team, was a one-man disaster to Midvale's chances in the semi-final game Saturday afternoon.  McPhee chalked up 8 field goals and 3 free throws for 19 points and scoring honors as he paced the Cardinals to a 12-7 first quarter lead and was still leading 24-19 at intermission.

A great Midvale rally in the 3rd period, sparked by Hostetler and Ford, erased the Canfield edge and sent the teams into the home stretch tied at 32-all, but a sudden burst of speed carried the victors to the fore and Midvale was unable to recover.  Ford led the Blue Devils' scoring with 16 points (8 field goals), while little Hostetler followed with 7 points (3 field goals and a free throw).

41 - Midvale Blue Devils State Time-Out

COLUMBUS - While the game played by Head Coach Pete Wolfe's Midvale Blue Devils (9-0) (21-5) against the Cridersville Rams in the quarter-finals of the State Class B Tournament last night was decidedly improved over the game they played against the Waterloo Wonders (26-3) on Thursday, the team still hasn't reached their peak.  This on the authority of Coach Wolfe himself who said yesterday that the Blue Devils were "sluggest" against Waterloo, but that he expected them to "loosen-up" for the Cridersville game.

"They played a lot better against Cridersville, but I think they can still open up another notch or two," Coach Wolfe said today.  "And they'll have to if we are to get by the Canfield Cardinals, one of the fastest breaking teams I have ever seen."

Coach Wolfe yesterday had planned to take his team for a tour of Otterbein College at Westerville, where he attended school, but changed his plans and the team visited the State Penitentiary and Bureau of Vital Statistics and then "took in" a show.  With only a half day to themselves today, the team was to "knock around" town this morning, eat early and then head for the Coliseum where the tournament is being played.

Meanwhile, almost the entire village of Midvale moved into Columbus.  There was probably no one but the night watchman left in town last night and when the Blue Devils won, they all just decided to stay over for today's semi-final.  Midvale reached the semi-finals of the State Tournament in 1937 when the great Frank Baumholtz, now at Ohio University and one of the nation's greatest cagers, was a Senior and making himself All-Ohio scholastic star at the outset of his sparkling collegiate career.

41 - Midvale Brings-Down Cridersville 30-23 (3-21-41)

Midvale Blue Devils Forward Adrian Ford scored 12 points...wins game honors...and led his team to a 2nd straight upset...this time against the Cridersville Rams by a score of 30-23.  Adrian Ford has amassed 114 points in tournament play with an average of 12.6 points per game.

COLUMBUS - A shrewd, fast-thinking and hard fighting Midvale Blue Devils (9-0) (21-5) eliminated a giant and highly-favored Cridersville Rams team from the State Class B Tournament by a score of 30-23 before 7,507 screaming fans to enter the semi-finals against a fleet, high scoring Canfield Cardinals team...runner-up in the 1940 tournament.  The Cardinals advanced into the semi-final round by dropping the Hanover Panthers 48-42 dispite the 31-point spree of Hanover's big center, Ed Flowler.  In the other semi-finals today, Glenford was to meet Xenia.

With little forward Calvin "Tod" Hostetler leading the way with a dazzling display of ball stealing and sensational passing the Midvale Five grabbed a 10-5 lead at the start of the 1st quarter and was never headed the remainder of the game.  The Blue Devils held a lead of 16-13 at intermission and 26-20 at the end of the 3rd stanza mark, outscoring the favored Cridersville team in the 1st, 3rd and 4th periods and holding them even in the 2nd.

While Hostetler himself accounted for only 2 points, he passed off many baskets, feeding teammates for better range.  Midvale bottled up the Cardinals' great center...Roger Phillips...most of the game and held him to 11 points.  One of the few times he has been kept out of the twenties this season, only the night before he had set a new scoring record of 33 points in a tournament victory over previously unbeaten Fairfield of Columbus County.

Head Coach Pete Wolfe, the Midvale mentor, accomplished the impossible feat of stopping Phillips with a bit of strategy as has been shown in either the Class B or Class A meet thus far.  He had Forward Dale Ford plaguing Phillips around the front line and then when the big record breaking center moved into the pivot position in the center of the Midvale zone defense, "Ace" Adrian Ford and guard Jerry "Buzzy" Young took him over.  Ford played in front of him and Young took a stance at his side.

The result was an almost total "blackout" so far as the Cridersville team was concerned and completely stopped Phillips' favorite shot...jump-heave from close-in.  So well guarded was the star in the pivot that he left it near the close of the 2nd period and then left it for keeps throughout the final quarter contending himself with long shots over the Midvale defense.  Meanwhile, Adrian Ford who was lined up at forward last night, was collecting enough field goals to garner 12 points, led the Blue Devils offense and copped individual honors.  Captain Young scored 9 points for the victors.

41 - Midvale Blue Devils State Time-Out

COLUMBUS - A stack of telegrams, carrying best wishes for success helped spur the Midvale Blue Devils (8-0) (20-5) to their 42-37 victory over the highly regarded Waterloo Wonders (26-3) in the opening round of the State Class B Basketball Tournament at Ohio State University Gymnasium last night.

Head Coach Pete Wolfe, youthful mentor of the Midvale cagers, wasn't entirely satisfied with the play of his team and said he expects improvement tonight at the Coliseum where the Blue Devils meet the favored Cridersville Rams.  "They were a bit sluggish last night," Coach Wolfe said, "I think it was because they had too much rest.  They'll be ready today."

Coach Wolfe, who had planned to take his team to Westerville, seat of Otterbein College, his alma mater, made a last minute switch and took the team to the Deshler-Wallick Hotel.  Yesterday the squad toured the State House and State office building.  Today they'll visit Otterbein, touring the campus and attend some of the classes.  No practice was schedule.

Telegrams were sent Coach Wolfe and the team by many well-wishers back in Tuscarawas County.  One of the most prized was from Head Coach Dutch Furbay and his Dennison Railroaders, highly touted combination that Coach Wolfe's team eliminated in a Sectional Tournament game 30-28.  The New Philadelplhia Booster Club, Dennison High School and County Supt. W.E. Laws also sent telegrams.

41 - Midvale Upsets Waterloo 42-37 (3-20-41)

Midvale Blue Devils Forward Jerry "Buzzy" Young won game honors and dropped in 16 points (7 field goals and 2 free throws) in leading the charge of the Blue Devils to bring down the highly regarded and famous Waterloo Wonders 42-37 in a State game grabbing a well-earned thrilling upset.  Young has totaled 105 points in tournament play averaging 13.1 points per game.

COLUMBUS - Slow, deliberate basketball and an 11-point lead buildup during the first 3 periods carried the Midvale Blue Devils (8-0) (20-5) from Eastern Ohio District to a 42-37 triumph over the Waterloo Wonders (26-3) in a 1st round game in the State Class B Basketball Tournament at Ohio State University Gymnasium here last night.  The victory, scored before a huge throng that jammed every seat in the gym, qualified the Blue Devils for a quarter-final game against the Cridersville Rams at 7PM tonight at the State Fairgrounds Coliseum.  All Class B teams moved to the Coliseum today.

The end of the game was the signal for a wild demonstration from the hundreds of Midvale fans that were in the crowd.  They swept onto the floor with a deafening roar at the sound of the gun and cheered the Blue Devils long and loud.  Head Coach Pete Wolfe, former Otterbein College athlete, directed the play of the Blue Devils without a slip and the slow, rolling offense of the victors forced Waterloo to play along the same line and robbed the one-time Wonders of the speed and dazzling passing that marked their play during 26 triumphs in 28 starts before last night's game.

The zone defense set up by Midvale worked well against Waterloo and only Ace Roach, 6-foot 5-inch Wonders center, caused the Blue Devils much grief.  Roach played the pivot in the middle of the Midvale defense and chalked up 13 points and it was mainly through his efforts that H. Drummon, Waterloo guard, collected another 13 to share the Waterloo's scoring honors.  Captain Jerry "Buzzy" Young, Midvale forward, furnished the sparkplug for the Blue Devils, spearheaded their floor game and came up with 16 points which won individual honors of the game.  He out-faked Waterloo's man-to-man defense time and again to get open set shots from the side of the court...his favorite...and to break down the foul lane for lay-ups.

Midvale outscored Waterloo 9 to 3 in the 1st quarter, 10 to 9 in the 2nd and 15 to 11 in the 3rd.  Waterloo came on and took an 8 to 1 edge in the scoring in the final quarter, but pushed the best of the attack there against a full string of substitutes sent into the game by Coach Wolfe.  While Young was contributing 16 of the Blue Devils markers, guard Adrian Ford found the hoop with 6 field goals and a free throw for 13 points and forward Calvin "Tod" Hostetler added 9.  The referees called only 8 personal fouls against Midvale, while 13 were assessed against Waterloo and the latter's Pinkerman, a guard, was chased from the game midway through the final period for too many violations.

Ford opened the scoring for Midvale and was fouled in the attempt, but missed the free throw and then Hostetler scored from the center line before Waterloo tallied on guard A. Wiserman's free throw.  Ford scored from under the basket and Young made it 8-1 Midvale from the side of the court before Roach scored Waterloo's 1st field goal near the close of the period which ended with the Blue Devils holding a 9-3 advantage.  Captain Young popped the hoops with 3 action shots, 2 from the side and one from the middle and Ford and Hostetler each added a shot in the 2nd quarter as Midvale boosted its total to 19, while Waterloo, which trailed 19-10 at one time, came up with one at the end of the period on a tip shot by Roach and trailed 19-12 at intermission.

Mike Ford opened the Midvale attack in the 3rd stanza and midway through it the Blue Devils had built up a 27-16 advantage as both teams loosened up and began to pound the hoops at both ends of the floor.  Young came up with 2 field goals in the period and when the gun cracked Midvale's lead was expanded to 34-23.  Midvale's regulars scored even with Waterloo during the 1st part of the 4th period and as time ran out Coach Wolfe sent his substitutes into the game.

41 - Midvale Blue Devils In State Tournament At Columbus

MIDVALE - Chances of the Midvale Blue Devils' basketball team in the State finals at Columbus Thursday, Friday and Saturday suffered a setback today when it was revealed by Head Coach Peter Wolfe that 3 members of his squad...2 of them regulars...may be out of the running.  The 3 are Center Al Turrin, Forward Dale Ford and Reserve Forward Lloyd Swinderman.

Turrin is suffering from an attack of tonsilities, Ford has an infected leg and Swinderman has been hit by an attack of the flu.  "I believe they will all be ready to make the trip with us tomorrow," Coach Wolfe said today."  All three were sent home from school and Turrin was put to bed by Coach Wolfe and immediately given "shots" for his illness.

The Blue Devils are paired off with Head Coach Masgellan Hairstron's Waterloo Wonders to play at 8PM Thursday night in the headline attraction of the 1st day's Class B games in the tournament.  Hairston, whose Wonders won the State Championship in 1934 and 1935, has piloted this year's combination to 26 victories and 2 defeats, but failed to list the scores for tournament officials.

"We don't pay much attention to the score," Hairston said.  "We just go out and win'em and once a game is over we forget abouit it and concentrate on the next one."  Reports are current that Hairston has another "wonder" team, playing unorthodox basketball and depending on amazing floor formations and "fancy-dan" ball-handling and passing, hallmarks of his Champions in 1934-35.

Plans for a celebration for Midvale's triumph in the Eastern Ohio District Tournament at Dennison in an assembly at the high school today were postponed until tomorrow and will be combined with a "sendoff" for the squad.  Coach Wolfe and his team will leave Dennison by train at 11:18AM for Columbus and will practice on the Ohio State University gymnasium floor, scene of their Thursday night encounter with Waterloo, tomorrow afternoon and at the State Fairgrands Coliseum Thursday morning.

Present plans call for the team to stay in Westerville, home of Otterbein College, Coach Wolfe's alma mater.  The squad will be taken from Midvale to Dennison in a school bus.  The "sendoff" tomorrow morning will include a snake dance, pep rally and the presentation of individual medals to members of the team and presentation of trophies to the school by Coach Wolfe.

NOTE:

The headline tilt in the Class B Division for the 1st day is the classic matching of the 1941 edition of the famed Waterloo Wonders, again coached by Magellan E. Hairston, whose team grabbed the State Championship in 1934 and 1935 and then romped through a long schedule this year with a record of 26-2.

Midvale, on the other hand, had trouble getting underway, but closed out the season with a great 13-game winning streak.  The Midvale team brings a record of 19-5 into the State meet.  Incidentally, the Tuscarawas quintet is making its 3rd trip to the State Tournament in 5 years.

41 - Midvale Blue Devils District Champions (2nd In A Row) (3-15-41)

One glance at the picture above and you can see the winner and loser in the Class B Basketball finals at Dennison Saturday afternoon.  The smile of Captain Jerry "Buzzy" Young (23 points on 10 field goals and 3 free throws) is 2nd to the left and of Head Coach Pete Wolfe of the Midvale Blue Devils (extreme right) are a great deal wider than those of Head Coach Russ Thomas of the Warsaw Eagles and Captain Marvin Rogers.

DENNISON - The Midvale Blue Devils became the 1st Class B Team to successfully defend a Championship at the Annual Eastern Ohio District Class B High School Basketball Tournament which closed at Dennison on Saturday, nominating the Blue Devils to take part in the State finals at Columbus this week.

The Midvale Blue Devils (7-0) (19-5) still showing the class and power that carried it to the top of the heap of the Tuscarawas County Class B combinations in a late-season rush, turned back a rangy, but strictly mediocre Warsaw Eagles team from Coshocton County 51-43 in the Class B final on Saturday afternoon.  The victory for Midvale was a personal triumph for Head Coach Pete Wolfe in his 1st year as the school mentor.  After an ordinary start in the season, his team was strengthened at the semester and he went on to win the Annual County Tournament and then to successfully defend the District title won last year and in 1937 by Midvale teams coached by M.R. Helwick.

Over 500 fans saw Wolfe's combination successfully combat the great height of the Eagles and win the school the title Saturday afternoon.  The Champions will go to Columbus for the State finals opening Thursday afternoon and closing with the crowningof a new State Champion at the State fairgrounds Coliseum next Saturday night.  Drawings were made today.

Coach Wolfe's Midvalers, as paced by forward Jerry "Buzzy" Young and lanky guard Adrian Ford, were too much for Warsaw and might have piled on a larger score had they coasted at several intervals after taking leads ranging of up to 12 points.  Captain Young split the nettings with 23 points, while Ford added 8 field goals and a free throw to bag scoring honors and clinch places on the All-Tournament teams for themselves.

Midvale took an 11-0 lead over the Warsaw Eagles in the 1st 3 and a half minutes and were never headed.  The Coshocton County team came up to 15-9 at the period end and cut the lead to 2 points once in the 3rd period.  The threat came soon after the half which closed with the Blue Devils leading 23-18 and neither team scoring in the final 4 minutes of the 2nd period.

The Blue Devils went into a 25-18 lead at the start of the 3rd quarter, but the Eagles rallied and closed the gap.  A time out and subsequent tightening of defenses and the loosening of new offensive drives carried the Champions away from the threat.  They led 41-39 at the close of the 3rd stanza.

41 - Midvale Squeaks Out a 44-41 Win Over Philo (3-14-41)

Midvale Blue Devils Guard Adrian Ford wins game honors setting the nets on fire with 16 points (5 field goals and 6 free throws) while leading the Blue Devils to a 44-41 victory over the Philo Electrics in a District Tournament contest where Midvale led all the way.  Ford now has 73 points in tournament play.  He has a average of 12.3 points per game.

DENNISON - A pair of Blue Devil teams, the Midvale Blue Devils in Class B and the Zanesville Blue Devils in Class A came out of the 2nd round of semi-final games in the Eastern Ohio District Scholastic Basketball Tournament in Dennison last night with tickets punched for the Championship games today and tonight.  Carrying the torch for 15 other Tuscarawas County teams that have fallen by the wayside since the tournament season opened 4 weeks ago, Head Coach Pete Wolfe's Midvale combination downed the Philo Electrics 44-41 last night, while Zanesville ran over Barnesville 60-37.  A crowd of nearly 1,000...897 of them cash customers...saw the game.

Midvale plays the Warsaw Eagles of Coshocton County at 3:30PM this afternoon for the District Class B Championship...now held by the Midvale Blue Devils...and a trip to the finals at Columbus next week.  Midvale had a narrow squeak last night and depended for victory on a 6-point lead carefully built up during the 1st 3 quarters; although, the summary shows the Wolfemen's margin of victory to have been scored at the free throw line.  But they were tough there and sank 14 of 19 shots, while Philo hit only 9 of 21.

The 6-point lead the Midvale Blue Devils (6-0) (18-5) held at the start of the final period looked like a mountain until Philo finally whittled it to practically nothing and guard Adrian Ford and forward Jerry "Buzzy" Young were ejected on personal fouls with 2 minutes remaining.  And right there the Electrics elected to sink a field goal and cut the Blue Devils' lead to just 2 points at 43-41, but the 2 points were to be Philo's last.

Less than a minute remained when guard Vic Paris dropped in another free throw to give the victors their final tally.  The Osbournemen of Head Coach Ray Osbourne missed a scoring chance in the last 10 seconds when guard W. Fitz missed a free toss.  Midvale had taken an 11-8 lead in the 1st quarter, doubled the points in the 2nd period, which ended 22-17 and then attached another 13 points in the 3rd stanza to outscore Philo 35 to 29.

Fine floor work by Young and a 2nd-half spurt by Adrian Ford sparked the Midvale attack.  Ford collected 2 field goals in each of the last 2 quarters which added to his 8 points and had matched that in the 1st half for a total of 16 points.  Young tallied 13 points right behind him.  Forward Gilmore, Philo sharpshooter whose long distance firing in the 1st half kept the Electrics in the game collected 9 points, but Captain W. Fitz tickled the hoops with 7 in the final stanza to lead the Philo surge and capture individual honors for the team with 11 markers.
