41 - Midvale Blue Devils District Champions (2nd In A Row) (3-15-41)
One glance at the picture above and you can see the winner and loser in the Class B Basketball finals at Dennison Saturday afternoon. The smile of Captain Jerry "Buzzy" Young (23 points on 10 field goals and 3 free throws) is 2nd to the left and of Head Coach Pete Wolfe of the Midvale Blue Devils (extreme right) are a great deal wider than those of Head Coach Russ Thomas of the Warsaw Eagles and Captain Marvin Rogers.
DENNISON - The Midvale Blue Devils became the 1st Class B Team to successfully defend a Championship at the Annual Eastern Ohio District Class B High School Basketball Tournament which closed at Dennison on Saturday, nominating the Blue Devils to take part in the State finals at Columbus this week.
The Midvale Blue Devils (7-0) (19-5) still showing the class and power that carried it to the top of the heap of the Tuscarawas County Class B combinations in a late-season rush, turned back a rangy, but strictly mediocre Warsaw Eagles team from Coshocton County 51-43 in the Class B final on Saturday afternoon. The victory for Midvale was a personal triumph for Head Coach Pete Wolfe in his 1st year as the school mentor. After an ordinary start in the season, his team was strengthened at the semester and he went on to win the Annual County Tournament and then to successfully defend the District title won last year and in 1937 by Midvale teams coached by M.R. Helwick.
Over 500 fans saw Wolfe's combination successfully combat the great height of the Eagles and win the school the title Saturday afternoon. The Champions will go to Columbus for the State finals opening Thursday afternoon and closing with the crowningof a new State Champion at the State fairgrounds Coliseum next Saturday night. Drawings were made today.
Coach Wolfe's Midvalers, as paced by forward Jerry "Buzzy" Young and lanky guard Adrian Ford, were too much for Warsaw and might have piled on a larger score had they coasted at several intervals after taking leads ranging of up to 12 points. Captain Young split the nettings with 23 points, while Ford added 8 field goals and a free throw to bag scoring honors and clinch places on the All-Tournament teams for themselves.
Midvale took an 11-0 lead over the Warsaw Eagles in the 1st 3 and a half minutes and were never headed. The Coshocton County team came up to 15-9 at the period end and cut the lead to 2 points once in the 3rd period. The threat came soon after the half which closed with the Blue Devils leading 23-18 and neither team scoring in the final 4 minutes of the 2nd period.
The Blue Devils went into a 25-18 lead at the start of the 3rd quarter, but the Eagles rallied and closed the gap. A time out and subsequent tightening of defenses and the loosening of new offensive drives carried the Champions away from the threat. They led 41-39 at the close of the 3rd stanza.
