41 - Port Slams Sugarcreek-Shanesville 48-30 (2-22-41)
Port Washington Purple Riders Senior Forward Jim Goettge caught fire and jammed the hoops for 19 Points (9 field goals and a free throw) claiming game honors while leading the Purple Riders to a blow-out of highly regarded Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates 48-30.
DOVER - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (1-2) (32-21) were unable to stop Port's Senior forward Jim Goettge. The Pirates went down to defeat 48-30 without threatening as he sent 19 points through the nets.
The Port Washington Purple Riders (1-1) (6-22), the largest number of points in the tournament so far, was ahead 17-11 at the end of the 1st quarter in a Consolation Division contest. The Purple Riders scoring machine continued in the 2nd quarter dropping in another 13 points, while their defense held the Pirates to just 6 markers and commanded a 13 point lead at intermission 30-17. The 2 cage teams played nearly even in the 3rd quarter with Port Washington picking up a point on Sugarcreek-Shanesville 7 to 6 and the score at the end of the stanza showing Port leading 38-24. The Purple Riders remained hot in the last and final quarter scoring 10 points which iced the game, while again their defense held the Pirates to but 6 points as their season ended.
Senior center Bob Woodard also scored 10 points and Sophomore forward Dwaine Smith picked up 9 markers for Port Washington as guard Earl Smith dropped in 12 points for Sugarcreek-Shanesville.
