COLUMBUS - While the game played by Head Coach Pete Wolfe's Midvale Blue Devils (9-0) (21-5) against the Cridersville Rams in the quarter-finals of the State Class B Tournament last night was decidedly improved over the game they played against the Waterloo Wonders (26-3) on Thursday, the team still hasn't reached their peak. This on the authority of Coach Wolfe himself who said yesterday that the Blue Devils were "sluggest" against Waterloo, but that he expected them to "loosen-up" for the Cridersville game.
"They played a lot better against Cridersville, but I think they can still open up another notch or two," Coach Wolfe said today. "And they'll have to if we are to get by the Canfield Cardinals, one of the fastest breaking teams I have ever seen."
Coach Wolfe yesterday had planned to take his team for a tour of Otterbein College at Westerville, where he attended school, but changed his plans and the team visited the State Penitentiary and Bureau of Vital Statistics and then "took in" a show. With only a half day to themselves today, the team was to "knock around" town this morning, eat early and then head for the Coliseum where the tournament is being played.
Meanwhile, almost the entire village of Midvale moved into Columbus. There was probably no one but the night watchman left in town last night and when the Blue Devils won, they all just decided to stay over for today's semi-final. Midvale reached the semi-finals of the State Tournament in 1937 when the great Frank Baumholtz, now at Ohio University and one of the nation's greatest cagers, was a Senior and making himself All-Ohio scholastic star at the outset of his sparkling collegiate career.
