Senior forward Dallas Crites led the Indians with 8 points. Ridenour has amassed 29 points in the tournament with a 7.3 points per game average.
DOVER - After 2 of the closest battles of the fast closing Tuscarawas County Class B Tournament and one near upset, tonight's finals finds the Strasburg Tigers and the Gnadenhutten Indians battling it out for the Consolation Championship, while the Midvale Blue Devils and Dundee Bulldogs meet in the regular tournament Championship game at Memorial Hall. Strasburg last night put on a last half rally to send the Bolivar Cardinals, League Champions, home for good on the short end of a 27-25 score, while Gnaden was hard-put to finally eliminate the fighting Stone Creek Golden Panthers 25-22 in the last few minutes.
Only a small crowd of 389 paid customers saw the 2-game session, but even so the crowd surpassed the 262 of last year, but tonight's 2 games are expected to be played before a packed house. Doors open at 6:30.
In tonight's games, the Blue Devils are favored, but Dundee's scrappy club, in the county finals for the 1st time since 1934, are expected to give the defending champions a fight. The Strasburg-Gnaden contest is a toss-up. Presentation of trophies to the winners will be made by County Supt. W.E. Laws, Tournament Manager, Harold Everett announced.
The Tournament Championship Trophy is donated by the Daily Reporter, the Runner-up Trophy by the Dover Branch of the Sanitary Milk Co., the Consolation Division Trophy by the S. Toomey Co., the Sportsmanship Trophy by the Daily Times and the League Trophy, which goes to the Bolivar Cardinals, is donated by the E. Frenberg Co. Tournament winners will receive gold medals presented by Walter D. Lieser Inc., the runner-up team silver medals given by the Marsh Wall Produces Co. The tourney winner also gets the ball used in the final game donated by the Godfrey Electric Co. Awards will be made at the half of the final game.
The Gnadenhutten Indians (2-1) (26-23) and the Stone Creek Golden Panthers' (2-2) (7-17) game started out as expected with the Indians piling up an 11-4 lead at the 1st period, but in the 2nd quarter, the Golden Panthers struck back holding Gnaden to a single field goal, while piling up 6 markers to remain behind by only 13-10 at the half. Guard Don Miller scored an action shot for the Indians and guard Wayne Kugler a free throw to put Stone Creek within 1 point of the Indians, but center Ralph Long scored an action shot to give Gnadenhutten a 3-point lead and they froze the ball the remainder of the time.
Ridenour's 10 points was high for the game, while Senior forward Dallas Crites scored 8 markers for Gnaden.
