42 - Ottawa Hills Trips-Up Gnaden 49-46 (3-19-42)

SPRINGFIELD - Although trying desperately to overcome its opposition the Gnadenhutten Indians (7-1) (27-2) were eliminated from the Ohio Class B Basketball Championship race as it bowed to the Ottawa Hills Green Arrows (19-3) in an opening round contest of the State Tournament last night.  The Indians, a team that went through the season with 27 victories and only 2 defeats, could not match the powerhouse activities of Big Dave Thompson, Green Arrows center.

Thompson was the difference between victory and defeat as he sent the Eastern Ohio District representatives crashing to the tune of 21 points.  He hit 9 field goals and 3 free throws from the charity line to not only pace his team, but to also take top scoring honors for the opening of the engagements, played before an estimated total of nearly 6,000 persons.  The team battled it out on even terms until the last period when Ottawa Hills pulled away.  The Green Arrows held a 13-12 advantage at the end of the 1st period and lead 26-24 at intermission.

Gnaden temporarily stopping Thompson, unleased its full force in the 3rd quarter to come within a single point of the Arrows 40-39.  During that period, the fast breaking Indians sent Senior center Captain John Metzger and Junior guard Ken Kohl close for scores.  However, Gnadenhutten failed to cash in on the foul lanes getting only 6 out of 12 shots during the game.

In the final stanza, Metzger connected with 2 field goals, while Kohl got one in Gnaden's attempt to rally.  However, guard Bob Bogart and forward Ed Miller teamed up with Thompson in sending the Arrows to victory.  By virtue of its win, Ottawa Hills will face Waynesburg in its 2nd round contest today.

Referees McMillan and Mechling called 15 personal fouls against the Indians and 10 against the Green Arrows.  Gnadenhutten lost Senior forwards Don Miller and Bill Schreiner and the victors lost forward Dick Edelen.  Gnaden's misses at the foul line might be blamed for the Indians' loss as they outscored the Arrows 20-19 from the field, but were shorted 11 of 17 free throws.

42 - Gnaden Wins 1st District Championship 46-40 (3-14-42)

Nothing but happiness as admirers surround 1st-Year Head Coach Ralph Gartrell (center) and Captain John Metzger (right center) of Gnaden after they won the school's 1st District title, defeating the New Concord Little Muskies 64-40.

Gnadenhutten Indians Senior Center John Metzger who won game honors by scoring 17 points (7 field goals and 3 free throws) in leading his team to the Championship Title in the Eastern Ohio District Class B Tournament at Dennison.  Metzger has run up a total of 97 points in tournament play in 7 games.  He is now averaging 13.8 points per game.

DENNISON - In the Class B Final in the afternoon, the Gnadenhutten Indians (7-0) (27-1) very simply outscrapped the undefeated New Concord Little Muskies to win the school its 1st District Championship in tournament history.  The lead changed hands 6 times and the score was tied 5 times in the first 3 quarters before Gnaden fell 6 points behind and then staged one of the District's all-time great uphill struggles to win out.

The Little Muskies led 12-11 at the end of the 1st period, but the Indians set the pace 23-21 at intermission.  Gnadenhutten then fell 4 points behind in the 3rd period, which ended 33-29 with New Concord ahead and an early action shot boosted the "Whiz Kids" margin to 6 in the 4th stanza.  But there Senior Don Miller, Gnaden guard, stepped into the gap.  He came from the bench, where he had been pulled by Head Coach Gartrell when he drew his 3rd personal foul and went right to town.

He personally scored 4 field goals and a free throw and played a mamoth floor game as he set the pace for Gnaden's winning drive down the stretch.  He scored 7 of the points in the long streak that extended from the time the score read 35-29 New Concord at the very outset of the period, until it was reversed and reading 36-35 Gnadenhutten and 4 and a half minutes remained.

His work was done; however, and the Indians responded from there in and won going away.  They led 42-35 with 3 minutes left before the Little Muskies again hit the hoop.  Miller wound up with 11 points, but scoring honors went to Captain Senior center John Metzger of the Indians who hit 7 baskets and 3 free throws for 17 points.  New Concord forward Wallace topped his team with 13 markers.

NOTE:  The 1st District Basketball Championship ever won by the Gnadenhutten Indians High School was sufficient cause for a village celebration on Saturday.  After Head Coach Ralph (Blondie) Gartrell's Indians tucked the title safely away by downing the "Whiz Kids" of New Concord, they were taken to the Buckeye Hotel in Uhrichsville for dinner and then to Gnadenhutten where a large crowd of townsfolk met with the village band and staged an imprompt parade through the village.

The crowd invaded the school and carried the team's trophies downtown and put them on exhibition in a store window.  Today Coach Gartrell was in Springfield for the drawings for the State finals.  He will take his squad to Springfield by bus, leaving Gnaden Wednesday morning after a school celebration, school Superintendent Virtue announced.

42 - Bolivar Falls To New Concord 42-31 (3-13-42)

Head Coach John Major and his Bolivar High School Cardinals, above, enter the Eastern Ohio District Class B Basketball Tournament at Dennison facing the highly-touted, undefeated New Concord Small Muskies nickenamed the "Whiz Kids," who ran-down the Cardinals 42-31.  Members of the Red Bird team are FRONT:  Bill Zutavern - Calvin Jones - Warren Klink - Russ Ross and Joe Huffman.  MIDDLE:  Head Coach John Major - Sam Gordon - Paul Lab - Homer Class - Ralph Peden and Manager Ray Webber.  BACK:  Manager Junior Lundenberger - Jim Augsburger - Fred Charton - Keene Lebold and Tom Harris.  Absent when the picture was taken was Gil Augsburger.

DENNISON - Head Coach Major's Bolivar Cardinals (6-2) (14-7) put up one of the pluckiest scraps of the District Tournament, but lost ground almost continuously against the veteran New Concord Small Muskies which boasts not only experience, but a lot of height and 2 boys who received honorable mention on the Associated Press All-Ohio Team.  Battling for every point and every rebound at either end of the court, the Cardinals cut the "Whiz Kids" from their season average of 60 points a game to the 42 they needed to win.  And for a time, particulary in the 2 middle stanzas, it appeared that the Red Birds might trade the "Whiz" in on "Fizz."

There the Majormen tallied even at 9 points in the 2nd quarter and gave up only 2 in the 3rd with the Muskies gaining a 12-10 edge.  New Concord raced to a 9-4 advantage in the opening of the 1st period, but Bolivar hit back and wound up only 4 points off the pace, 10-4.  After the even scoring in the 2nd quarter, New Concord held a 19-15 lead and continued out front the remainder of the way, leading 31-25 at the 3rd quarter mark.

Junior Warren Klink, Bolivar forward who as a Sophomore rated an All-State berth, copped scoring honors for the Cardinals with 13 points, but was edged for game honors by New Concord's Bob Slater who had 14.  Klink sparked the Cardinal attack in almost every department and scored 5 field goals and 3 free throws, while Slater of the Little Muskies had 6 baskets and 2 foul tosses.  Forward Calvin Jones tallied 7 counts for Bolivar and center Russ Ross and guard Joe Huffman each picked up 5.

The Cardinals lost Jones and Ross in the 4th period on personal fouls, while New Concord lost Captain Wallace and Stockum.

42 - Gnaden Shaves Dresden 40-38 (3-12-42)

The Gnadenhutten High School Basketball Squad, County Class B League and County Tournament Champions, pictured above, bids for the Eastern Ohio District Championship Title by sliding by the Dresden Jayhawks 40-38 at Dennison.  Members of the team are FRONT:  Ken Kohl - Bill Lockett - Ralph Long - John Metzger - Bill Schreiner and Don Miller.  BACK:  Faculty Manager Ralph Johnson - Manager Bill Drumm - Manager Charles Miller - Elmer Morrison - Al Galbraith - Bob Kopp - Glen Montague - Manager Dean Kopp and Head Coach Ralph "Blondie" Gartrell.

Gnadenhutten Indians Senior Forward Don Miller scored 13 points in leading his team over the Dresden Jayhawks 40-38 in the District Tournament in Dennison.  Miller now has 68 points in 6 tournament games for an average of 11.3 points per game.

DENNISON - The Gnadenhutten Indians (6-0) (26-1), coached by 1st-year Head Coach Ralph "Blondie" Gartrell, battled the Dresden Jayhawks on even terms throughout a red hot shooting exhibition and then beat them under the wire.  Gartrell's Indians and the Jayhawks played a close game throughout, but the lead changed hands 7 times and the score was tied 8 times before the Warriers reached the final gun with a 2-point margin.

The 2 teams ended the 1st period all even at 10 points, but in the 2nd, after Gnaden had commanded a 16-12 edge, Dresden gained the front and led 22-18 at intermission.  Early in the 3rd period Dresden led 25-20, the best advantage either team could build throughout the game.  The 3rd quarter ended with the Reds trailing 31-30.

And then, in quick fashion, the victors rushed to a 36-31 advantage before Dresden again hit the hoop and when they did they trimmed it to 36-34, but the Indians retained the lead and with free throws by Seniors forward Bill Schreiner and center John Metzger stretched it to 38-34 and finally 40-34 when Metzger scored a basket on a follow shot under the hoop.  Forward Martin of the Jayhawks, scored a follow up shot with only a minute left and with the clock reading 8 seconds to go, while Dresden's Fulks tossed a short one off a fast break to end the scoring.

The basket boosted Fulks' total to 18 points and gave him scoring honors.  Coach Gartrell's team was led by Miller, who had 13 points and 6 of the 7 boys in his lineup tallied.  Ken Kohl had 10 points and Metzger 9.

42 - Bolivar Edges Tusky 35-32 (3-7-42)

Bolivar Cardinals Junior Forward Warren Klink dropped in 17 points leading his team to a 35-32 stand-off of the Tuscarawas Broncos 35-32.  Klink now has 96 points in 7 games during the tournaments for an average of 13.7 points per game.

DOVER - The surprising Bolivar Cardinals and the veteran Gnadenhutten Indians, both of the Tuscarawas County Class B League, today were eyeing the District Tournament at Dennison this week-end with hopes of using it to advance to the State finals.

The 2 teams won qualifying games before 843 paid customers at Memorial Hall Saturday night...Bolivar defeating the Tuscarawas Broncos 35-32 and Gnaden by recovering enough of its composure to sink the Big Prairie Panthers 54-40.  The 2 will draw against the New Concord Little Muskies and the Dresden Scotties, qualifiers in the Zanesville Sectional, at Dennison tonight.  The teams will play Thursday and Friday nights.

Saturday night the Indians, despite their 34-point margin of victory, were hard-pressed to remain in tournament play, while the 3-point margin of the Cardinals over the Broncos does not in any way show the superiority of the Red Birds over their opponents.  Bolivar, never a tournament team, was defeated by Tuscarawas 42-29 in county competition last week and barely eked its way through the Consolation Division Tournament to come to the Sectional in top shape...hitting on all 5 for the 1st time and utilizing all of its power.

The Tuscarawas Broncos (4-2) (12-7), riding high on a final season splurge which carried them to runner-up position in the county joust, never had much of a chance in its return game with the Bolivar Cardinals (6-1) (14-6).  With Junior forward Warren Klink running almost free and with guard Joe Huffman turning in his best game since the tournament started, the Cardinals piled up a 11-1 lead in the 1st period, Klink sinking 6 points and Huffman 5.

That lone point in the 1st period, made by Junior forward Charles Eckhardt, spelled defeat for Tuscarawas.  Although the Broncos cut the advantage to 20-13 at the half, they quickly fell behind again 29-17 in the 3rd quarter when they scored only 2 field goals.  The Red Bird zone defense worked too perfectly for the Broncos to come back.  They had few good shots and were always hurried and harried by the Cardinal zone which enveloped nearly every offensive effort.

Bolivar made only 9 points in the 3rd period when they ran Tusky ragged and bogged down in the final when they still had many opportunities to slow the Broncos down.  Senior Charles Myers, Tuscarawas forward, was high scorer for the game with 19 points earning him game honors.  All were made in the final 3 quarters, while Klink led Bolivar with 17 markers.  Besides Huffman's outstanding play and 8 points contributed to the Bolivar scorer, the Red Bird center Russ Ross, turned in his most spectacular game, outscoring Tusky's Senior center Angelo Cerqui 5 points to 3.  He tallied both his field goals in lthe final period when the chips were down.

Two-year Head Coach John Major's upsetting team was charged with 15 personal fouls, losing Huffman and guard Bill Zutavern in the final period, while 14-year Head Coach Charmis Davis' cagers were assessed only 9 personals.  However, the Cardinals sank 7 of 10 free throws, while the Broncos made only 8 of 20.

Bolivar, to reach its 1st District finals since 1935 when the Red Birds won the County Championshiop, pulled the biggest upset of the season by defeating the Dennison Railroaders 37-27 in the Section Tournament.  It also is the only team to defeat Gnadenhutten's Indians this year.

Phil Dienoff of Akron and Francis Dirodis of Ravenna turned in a nice job of refereeing all games in the Sectional, eliminating nearly all rough play; although, Charles Eckhardt and Angelo Cerqui of Tusky suffered slight injuries in their game with Bolivar.  Cerqui fell on the end of a bleacher support in the final few minutes.  Tournament Manager Dick Roberts figured the tourney financial report would show the joust drew slightly less than last year.

42 - Gnaden Overwhelms Big Prairie In The 2nd Half 54-40 (3-7-42)

Gnadenhutten Indians Senior Forward Don Miller wins game honors as he scored 17 points (8 field goals and a free throw) in leading the Indians and destroying the Big Prairie Panthers 54-40.  Miller has 55 points in 5 tournament contests for an average of 11.0 per contest.

DOVER - The Gnadenhutten Indians (5-0) (25-1) and the Big Prairie Panthers (16-4) game saw the Indians almost headed for a runaway by the Panthers in the 2nd period.  But, they recovered, tied the score at halftime and returned in the final 2 quarters to play their own game and overcome the smaller Holmes County team.  Gnaden was ahead 8-7 at the 1st period, but faltered badly in the 2nd to drop behind 19-14 at one point before the half ended with Junior guard Ken Kohl dropping one in from behind the center circle almost as the gun cracked to tie the count at 21-21.

The 3rd stanza saw the Indians come into their own.  Right at the start they opened their fast breaking attack, featuring fast and accurate passwork to sweep into a 37-32 lead at the end of the 3rd and continued in the final to collect their 14 point margin.  The Gartrellmen, throughout the contest, traveled by jumps and jerks and at times displayed uncertainty or over confidence which robbed their attack of its punch.  They missed many scoring opportunities and at times did not seem to have the drive which carried them to such a successful season, the county Championship and finally a crack at the District.

Senior forward Don Miller, who sank most of his shots from the side, scored 17 points to lead the attack, while Junior guard Bill Lockett dropped in 13 and Senior center John Metzger 12.  Senior guard Bill Schreiner and Kohl each scored 5 and Junior forward Ralph Long 2...the final quarter seeing Miller and Kohl go out on personal fouls.  Center Jack Basquin, who scored overhead shots from the corners consistently, led Big Prairie with 14 points, while Tom Smoot, star guard, came close behind with 12 and guard Bob Lee tallied 8.

The Panthers which conquered the Millersburg Knights 42-41 in an exciting game Thursday night, did not lose a man on personal fouls and was assessed only 9 fouls, while the Indians were charged with 13.  Big Prairie made 8 of 13 free throws and Gnaden 4 of 10.

The victory places the Indians in the District finals for the 2nd straight year.  Last year they won the Consolation Division of the county tournament and went to the semi-finals in the District meet before bowing out.

42 - Bolivar Bumps Dennison 37-27 (3-6-42)

DOVER - It's the Bolivar Cardinals against the Tuscarawas Broncos and the Gnadenhutten Indians against Big Prairie Panthers tonight at Memorial Hall and to the winners will go the right to compete in the Class B District Basketball Tournament at Dennison next week.  Bolivar's Cardinals pulled the upset of upsets out of the bag last night when they ousted the touted Dennison Railroaders from the tourney with a resounding 37-27 defeat, while Tusky's Broncos had plenty of trouble eliminating Holmesville, Holmes County Champions, 39-31.

Gnaden, which dropped the Sherrodsville Wildcats 56-41 Thursday night, is highly favored to take Big Prairie, which edged the Millersburg Knights 42-41, but the meeting of Bolivar and Tusky is unpredictable.  Bolivar, upset by Tusky 42-29 in the county meet, was more than impressive sending home the big Holmesville club.  The Indians competed in the District finals last year, reaching the semi-final game.

Tournament Manager Dick Roberts said the doors will open at 6:45PM and a grudge game between the Zippers and Stage Crew of the high school intramural league will start at that time.  Bill Reynolds will referee.  Last night 701 paid admissions to see the 2 games as compared with 495 the 1st night, the tournament running a little ahead of last year's attendance.

With forward Calvin Jones supplying the spark, the Bolivar Cardinals (5-1) (13-6), badly off form last week, rose to great heights to defeat the Dennison Railroaders (15-5) which earlier in the season had handed the Red Birds a 56-33 setback on the Dennison floor.  Jones, hotter than a firecracker, scored 19 points on 8 field goals and 3 free throws, while center Russ Ross, who was unimpressive in tournament play last week, turned in a sparkling game under the basket controlling the rebounds and scoring 8 points.

The 2 were Bolivar's standouts for the evening, but the Cardinals zone defense...so tight that Dennison got few set shots...spelled defeat for the Railroaders...their 1st by a Class B team this year.  Dennison scored 4 points before the Cards started their surge which carried them to a 7-6 lead at the 1st quarter, an 18-13 margin at the half and a 26-18 advantage at the 3rd stanza.

Once in the final period Bolivar slumped and Dennison cut the lead to 5 points...29-24...but the Cardinals came right back to take command again and win going away.  The game was bitterly contested and exciting throughout with Dennison counting on long shots, but the Bolivar defense held the Railroaders too far away from the bucket.

Center Bob Parks scored 10 points to lead the Dennison attack, while guard Arkie Williamson got 5 and guard John Morgan and forward Tod Hostetler each collected 4 markers.

Referees Phil Dienoff of Akron and Francis Dirodis of Ravenna assessed 12 personals on each team and 2 technicals against Junior Warren Klink, Cardinal star forward, for disputing a decision.  The Red Birds sank 7 of 12 free throws and Dennison made only 7 of 17.  The Railroaders lost Tod Hostetler and Bolivar lost guard Bill Zutavern on personal fouls.
