42 - Gnaden Gets A Scare From Dundee 44-29 (2-26-42)
Gnadenhutten Indians Senior Center John Metzger picks up game honors by scoring 12 points while leading the Indians to a decisive victory over the Dundee Bulldogs 44-21. Metzger has scored 25 points in tournament play, an average of 12.5 points per game.
DOVER - Although Gnadenhutten, with a record of 10 straight League wins and a season record of 20 out of 21 games has been rated as a hot tournament favorite, the Indians Championship game with the Tuscarawas Broncos tomorrow night can easily be called a toss-up. Tusky has been getting stronger every minute and the scare Dundee threw into the Indians last night only served to make the Bronco backers more confident their team has a good chance to win the title.
The biggest crowd of the tournament, a total of 1,410 admissions and slightly less than the 1,456 of last year's session, saw the best basketball of the tourney last night when the Gnaden and Dundee fought it out in the feature game. It was brother against brother with 1st-Year Head Coach Ken Gartrell's Dundee Bulldogs (1-1) (16-26) giving 3rd-Year Head Coach Ralph W. (Blondie) Gartrell's Gnadenhutten Indians (2-0) (29-23) (22-1) all they wanted for 3 periods and snatching the lead away from them in the final only to fade before Gnaden's 17-point splurge.
The score was tied no less than 6 times during the contest, the 2 teams trading almost basket for basket throughout the 1st three periods. Dundee led at the 1st period 7-5, but Gnaden held the Bulldogs to 3 points and took a 14-11 lead at halftime. The 3rd period saw the Indians increase the count to 18-11 before Dundee got going. The Bulldogs tallied and tied the score at 24-all with one minute to go in the 3rd stanza, but Gnaden led at the period end 27-25.
The final period saw Dundee take a 29-27 lead with 6 minutes remaining, but that ended it...the Bulldogs cracked which opened the door and the Indians, with Junior guard Ken Kohl sinking 3 long shots with dead-eye accuracy, ran their count up to 41 with Dundee going scoreless. Senior John Metzger, star Indian center, was high scorer for his team with 12 points, while little Junior guard Bill Lockett, who scored 10, sparkled for Gnadenhutten. Senior forward Bill Schreiner got 11 points, Kohl 8 and Senior forward Don Miller 3. Junior Ralph Long, regular forward, was ill with an attack of the measles. Center Paul Jones was high scorer for Dundee with 10 points, as guard Junior "Buck" Machan was next with 7 and the clever forward Milton Fruchey scored 6.
Seven personals were called on the Indians and 12 on the Bulldogs losing Machan in the final minutes. Gnaden scored 8 of 15 free throws and Dundee made 3 of 9.
