DOVER - With 2 titles already won in the best basketball season in the history of the school, the Gnadenhutten Indians today were looking forward to the Sectional and District Tournaments for new laurels. The County League Champions, made a double killing Saturday night by taking the County Class B Tournament Championship from the Tuscarawas Broncos 56-39 at Memorial Hall, while the Bolivar Cardinals eked out a 32-30 victory over the Strasburg Tigers to take the Consolation Title.
Gnaden, Tusky and Bolivar will enter the Sectional B Tournament here this week with drawings set for tomorrow night at Dover High School. The winners will go to the District Tournament at Dennison. A crowd of 1,309 customers, 133 more than saw the finals last year, watched the mighty Indians play flawlessly and without a falter as they swept over the battling Broncos Saturday night. The hectic struggle between Bolivar and Strasburg preceded the main clash and saw the Red Birds win by 2 points.
The double title was the Indians best and 2 beautiful trophies were carried away by Gnadenhutten to the Sensational record of 23-1 this year, missing a perfect record, but winning all 10 games in the League. The Indians played 3 tournament contests to win the title. They took the handsome Daily Reporter Trophy for winning the tournament title, the E. Fienberg & Company Trophy for the League Championship, gold basketballs given by the Marsh Wall Products Company and the tournament ball given by the Godfrey Electric Store.
Tuscarawas won the Runner-up Trophy donated by the Sanitary Milk Company and silver and gold tie clips donated by the Boston Clothing Company. Bolivar received the Consolation Trophy donated by the S. Toomey Company and Baltic the Sportsmanship Trophy donated by the New Philadelphia Times. Presentation for the trophies was made at the half of the final game with County Supt. W.E. Laws handing out the awards. He was introduced by Tournament Manager Harold Everett of Tuscarawas.
The Gnadenhutten Indians (3-0) (30-23) (23-1), defeated only by Bolivar this year, won 2 and the Tuscarawas Broncos (3-1) (18-24) 3 games to get into the finals. The Indians topped the Midvale Blue Devils 43-22 last week and then returned this week to set back a stubborn Dundee Bulldogs team 44-29. Tuscarawas beat the Port Washington Purple Riders 51-28, upset Bolivar 42-29 and topped Strasburg 41-27. The final game was a masterpiece of skill for the Indians. They edged away in the 1st quarter 12-8, jumped to 27-15 at the half and 41-26 at the 3rd period, moving smoothly every step of the way.
Tusky tried hard and always was dangerous, but the Broncos could not match the uncanny shooting of the Indians or their great passing attack. At one time in the 3rd stanza the Indians seemed bound to have difficulty with Seniors center John Metzger and forward Bill Schreiner each being charged with their 3rd personals. But, they played out the game without losing a man on fouls.
Metzger led the high-powered Indian attack with 18 points, while Senior forward Don Miller and Schreiner who did the bulk of their scoring inthe 1st half, were close behind with 14 and 12 respectively. Junior guards Ken Kohl and Bill Lockett each added 6 markers. Seniors Charles Myers, Tusky's high scoring forward and Angelo Cerqui, star center, led their attack with 14 points aspiece, but remaining players were held to a few points.
The Indians were assessed 13 personals and made 10 of 16 free throws, while the Broncos were assessed 15 personals and made 7 of 15 shots. Gnaden played without Ralph Long, regular forward, who is ill with the mumps.
