37 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Takes Down Dundee 50-25 (2-19-37)

DOVER - After an uncertain 1st quarter, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (1-0) (23-13) swung into a high scoring offensive and doubled the score on a fighting Dundee Bulldogs (0-1) (12-17) team to win their 1st round game by 25 points.

The Bulldogs battled hard in the opening period and when the smoke cleared away the Pirates had only a 13-8 lead.  The 2nd period saw the Sugarcreek-Shanesville offense start clicking and by halftime ran up a 29-10 lead to ice the game.  In the 3rd stanza, the Pirates stopped a Dundee rally to jump far in front, 40-23, as the final period started.  Every Sugarcreek-Shanesville player saw action in the last period.  Guard Don Ridle led the Pirates attack with 17 points (8 field goals and a free throw) securing game honors. Senior forward Cliff Moomaw and center Paul Andreas ringed the hoops for 9 points each (both had 3 field goals and 3 free throws).  Guard Don Ogg claimed 9 points (3 field goals and 3 free throws), while his Bulldogs teammate guard Dick Machan picked up another 8 points (2 field goals and 4 free throws) turning in a good game for both lads.

37 - Stone Creek Rally Upsets Mineral City 27-25 (2-19-37)

DOVER - Refusing to accept defeat, Head Coach James C. Wilson directed the Stone Creek Panthers (1-0) (4-7), who claimed the Cellar Champhionship in League play, defeated the 9th Place Mineral City Tigers (0-1) (7-17) in somewhat of an upset.

The game was played on even terms throughout and the Panthers only sealed their victory in the final period.  The Tigers, led by 1st year Head Coach Ludwig Birk, were leading 4-2, 12-10 and 19-18 at the quarter ends, but Stone Creek rallied to forge ahead 22-19 early in the final chukker.  Once in front the Panthers held firmly to their advantage until the final gun.

37 - Bolivar's Lebold Shot Drops Baltic 32-30 (2-19-37)

DOVER - Third year Head Coach Paul Scheetz's Baltic Eagles (0-1) (10-17) out-sized almost to a man and losing in the 1st upset bid of the meeting by the breadth of a field goal, scored by Bolivar forward Glen Lebold in the last few seconds of play, gave 1st year Head Coach Harold Peterson's Bolivar Cardinals (1-0) (19-12) the 32-30 nod.  The game was easily the most thrilling of the night and will give the remainder of the tourament a stiff tussle before it is surpassed for excitement and fine play.

The Cardinals took a 5-2 lead in the 1st quarter as both teams settled down to fast-breaking offenses and good passwork, but were unable to click on shots.  The Eagles put up a stronger battle the 2nd period and forced Bolivar to the limit before the Cardinals gained an 11-9 lead at halftime.  Putting on the pressure, both teams started the 3rd stanza with uncanny shots.  Baltic was creeping up to the middle of the period when they tied the count at 17-all.  Bolivar ran its total to 21 and Baltic rallied to reach 20 at the end of the period.  The hectic final period saw the Cardinals jump into a 25-20 lead, only to have the Eagles step in, tie the score at 26-all, then forge in front 28-26 with 4 minutes remaining.  Lebold dropped in an action shot to knot the count, but Senior guard Ward Lahm sent one spinning through the net and the Eagles were leading 30-28 with about 2 minutes to go.  Guard Ward Kreis jumped one in to tie the score at 30-all with about 1 minute to go.  Junior forward Bob Lint of Baltic missed a free throw and Lebold scored the final bucket with about 40 seconds remaining.  Forward Dale Huffman of Bolivar was the only player to leave the game on personal fouls.

Lebold and Kreis were tied for scoring honors with 11 points each (both with 5 field goals and a free throw) for Bolivar.  Lahm played a fine game for Baltic, leading the Eagles with 9 points (4 field goals and a free throw), while Junior center Dick Regula was close behind with 8 points (4 field goals).  Senior guard Wilson Eckert and Junior forward Harry Regula each scored 6 markers (both with 2 field goals and 2 free throws).

NOTE:  If Baltic were permitted to pick a hero from the ranks of the Class B players in the opening games of the tournament at Legion Hall last night, the entire town doubtless would have voted unanimously for the Eagles' own Dick Regula.

Regula, ill with flu all week, left his bed to take part in last night's game.  He held up his own end very well, contributing  8 points to the Eagles' offense and turning in a big defensive game.  But, his team lost to Bolivar by 2 points in a hard fought game.

37 - Gnaden Slams Port 45-19 (2-19-37)

DOVER - The Port Washington Purple Riders (0-1) (4-14) tried hard to give the Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) (15-15) a battle in the opening game of the tournament, but the Indians took command in the 2nd period and romped to a 45-9 victory.

With ragged play featured in the 1st period, 3rd year Head Coach Paul Plummer's Indians had all it could do to grab a 6-5 lead at the quarter, but Gnaden hit their stride in the 2nd stanza and were in front 21-8 at the half and led 29-15 as the final quarter opened.  The Purple Riders' 1st year Head Coach Walter Meade was the head coach for the Indians for 5 or 6 years in the earlier 30s.

Sophmore forward Leland Goettge sent 17 points (5 field goals and 7 free throws) spining through the nets to lead Gnadenhutten and gain game honors.  He was the only Indian to hit double figures.  Senior center John Bremer was Port Washington's biggest offensive threat, scoring 10 points (5 field goals).

37 - Frank Baumholtz (The Midvale Marvel)

This is Frank Baumholtz of Midvale.  The 1937 high school season was the last for one of the top stars coming out of Tuscarawas County.  After graduation he moved on to star in basketball at Ohio University.  After his graduation there, he was to go on to play professional basketball and then professional baseball.  He starred for the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies.  Hat tip to one of my readers, Randy Miller, who played basketball and baseball for the Garaway Pirates.  If it wasn't for him I would never have known about Baumholtz. I collected baseball cards when I was a kid and now wish I had known about Frank then as I would have placed his card along with my Mickey Mantle cards.

36 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville FALLS to Dennison 36-31 (3-14-36)

DENNISON - The Dennison Railroaders and the Amsterdam Rams are going to the State finals at Columbus next week.  The Railroaders defeated the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (6-2) 36-31 and will play the Rams in the Class B District Championship game tonight.

The Pirates, fighting the ball with grim determination that forced the issue at every step, made a gallant bid for victory and the Columbus trip in the 4th period, but Dennison, protecting an 11-point lead, staved off until the timer's gun gave the Railroaders their highest tournament honor.  Dennison fought Sugarcreek-Shanesville with a smooth-working offense backed by sterling under-the-basket play at both ends of the floor by Galbraith, elongated center and the big guard Rector.  The Railroaders led throughout the game, holding 11-7, 21-14 and 32-23 edges at the period ends.

Galbraith led Dennison's attack with 13 points (5 field goals and 3 free throws).  Juniors forward Cliff Moomaw and guard John Harmon, Pirate aces, led the Sugarcreek-Shanesville attack and emerged from the contest with individual scoring honors.  Moomaw snagged 14 points (6 field goals and 2 free tosses) and Harmon, one of the tourament's outstanding defensive players, caged 15 points (5 field goals and 5 free throws).

36 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Ambushes Lore City 48-24 (3-13-36)

DENNISON - Tuscarawas County today was assured of one entry in the State scholastic basketball finals at Columbus next week and had a chance to send 2 as the Eastern Ohio District qualifying tournament at Dennison reached the semi-final State with 8 teams remaining in the race for the 4 capital prizes.  The one sure county entry was in the Class B Division where the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (6-1) thumped the Lore City Blue Streaks 48-21 and the Dennison Railroaders will meet the Pirates tonight for a chance at the District Title and the Columbus trip.

The Pirates' victory over the Blue Streaks was marked up in a business-like way which saw Sugarcreek-Shanesville take the lead in the opening period and then pot instantly at the hoop to keep their opponents on the short end.  The Pirates had little trouble in breaking up the Lore City attack and consistently took possession of the ball after the latter took one shot at the bucket.  At their own end of the floor Sugarcreek-Shanesville usually had 3 or 4 shots and usually scored before the turnover.

The Pirates led 16-9, 29-16 and 36-23 at the period ends with 4 of their starting 5 tallying at least 10 points.  Paul Andreas, center, had a high of 13 points (5 field goals and 3 free throwa) for game honors.  Senior forward Dallas Hamsher hit the hoops for another 12 points (5 field goals and 2 free throws), while Juniors forward Cliff Moomaw and guard John Harmon followed with 10 points each (5 field goals and 3 field goals and 4 free throws).  Guards J. Stahoec and L. Stahoec led Lore City with 9 points (4 field goals and a free throw) and 6 points (3 field goals).

36 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Subdues Dover St. Joseph's 46-24 (3-7-36)

DOVER - Qualifying for the District Tournament at Dennison this week, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (5-1) conquered the Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers 46-24 and the Dennison Railroaders, by a hair's breath, nosed out the Midvale Blue Devils 20-19 in finals at Legion Hall on Saturday night.

The Pirates had little trouble with the Ramblers as they led all the way; although, the parochial school team spurted in the 3rd quarter and made the game look like it would be close.  But, Sugarcreek-Shanesville spurted too.  The Pirates brought their 2-game total to 116 points, while routing Dover St. Joseph's.

Starting without Junior Cliff Moomaw, their 1st string forward, Sugarcreek-Shanesville scored from the start and only let down once.  That was in the 3rd quarter when the Ramblers ran up their score to within 3 points of tying the count.  The score at that time was 20-17.  Then Moomaw was sent into the game and he, Junior guard John Harmon, Senior Dallas Hamsher and Sophomore guard Walter Drake in rapid succession scored baskets and set the count at 38-21 at the end of the period.  Benched on fouls were guard Andreas, forward Wiegaad and guard Hartz of Dover St. Joseph's and Drake and Junior forward Charles Zechiel for the Pirates.

Harmon did the most scoring for Sugarcreek-Shanesville with 13 points (6 field goals and a free throw), while Hamsher tallied 11 (5 field goals and a free toss) and Drake scored 7 (3 buckets and a free throw).  Moomaw's 2nd-half playing netted him 5 points(2 field goals and a free toss).  Forward Lab of the Ramblers clicked with 13 points (5 field goals and 3 free throws) and shared game honors with the Pirates Hanson.  Next in line was guard Hartz with 3 field goals for a total of 6 points.

36 - Dennison Trips-Up Midvale 20-19 (3-7-36)

DOVER - The Dennison Railroaders-Midvale Blue Devils (5-2) contest brought the 700 fans to their feet, providing the most excitement of the entire Sectional Tournament.  The Blue Devils today wore the crown as the "hard luck team of the tourney.".  After eliminating the County Champions, the  Bolivar Cardinals, by a score of 32-18 on Friday night, Midvale did as good a job of close-guarding, fast-passing, against the Railroaders.  But, they couldn't score with regularity.  The ball would kiss the hoop and roll off on three-fourths of their shots.

A batted ball from the hands of guard Rector clinched the contest for Dennison as Midvale fans rose in concerted protest against a foul called on Junior guard Frank Baumholtz in the last 25 seconds of play.  Railroader guard Whitmire shot the foul and missed.  Rector, rangy Dennison player, batted the ball through the net.  Midvale fans protested the foul against Baumholtz by Referee Raymond Scherer of Coshocton and swarmed about the officials after the game.  There was no disorder.  Baumholtz had been called for charging Whitmire as he attempted to dribble the ball through 2 Dennison players.

With the score at 19-18 in favor of the Blue Devils with only 50 seconds to play, forward Fred Marshall of Midvale missed a free throw.  With only 25 seconds to play, a foul was called on Baumholtz and the deciding basket was made.  Guard Delbert Keffer, who carried a large portion of the Midvale passing attack, was disqualified for a foul in the 4th period, but he was reinstated on recommendation of Referee Jim Robinson of Canton when it was shown there was no malicious intention.  Jack Walker, Midvale center, was sent from the game with 4 personals a few minutes later.  Forward Collins of Dennison was ejected from the game on fouls in the 3rd period.

Had Midvale's scoring machine been clicking like it did against Bolivar on Friday night, the score would have been decidedly in the Blue Devils' favor the entire route.  As it was, the Midvale players missed repeatedly in the 1st half when they had twice as many scoring chances as compared with the Railroaders.

Each team scored 7 field goals.  Midvale made only 5 of 13 foul shots, while Dennison made 6 of 14 three-throws.  Baumholtz, main-spring of the Blue Devil team, could hit for only 1 basket and a free throw in the 1st half.  But, started his team on a scoring spree in the 3rd quarter when he scored 3 baskets and another in the 4th period.  His total pointage was 11 (5 field goals and a free throw).  He made only one of 5 free-throws.

For Dennison, guard Wanosik was high scorer with 7 points (2 field goals and 3 free throws).  Railroader center Galbraith, although bottled most of the time, made 6 points (2 field goals and 2 free throws).

36 - Sectional Tournament Update

DOVER - Four Tuscarawas County Class B teams will fight it out in the Sectional Tournament finals at Legion Hall tonight to decide which 2 will qualify for the District Tournament meet at Dennison nex week.

The Midvale Blue Devils, which avenged a former defeat by pulling an A-1 upset on the Bolivar Cardinals last night, will play the rangy Dennison outfit at 8PM and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates and Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers, also winners last night, will tangel at 9PM.  Midvale guarding closely, snatching passes anywhere, shooting dead to the hoop, turned back the county champion Bolivar team 32-18.  Dover St. Joseph's pulled the other surprise.  It nosed out the strong Delroy team from Carroll County 27-26 after trailing in the 1st half.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville stifled a weakened Holmesville Bears aggregation under the super-lopsided score of 70-19.

More than 700 attended the 2nd session of the Sectional last night, according to E.W. Blackstone, Tournament Manager.  Referees are Raymond Scherer of Coshocton and J.R. Robinson of Canton.

36 - Midvale In 32-18 Revenge Game Over Bolivar (3-6-36)

DOVER - In the Tuscarawas County Tournament last week the Bolivar Cardinals (3-1) eliminated the Midvale Blue Devils (5-1) 30-18 sending the Blue Devils to the Consolation bracket...which they won.  They were out for revenge last night.

Revenge was in the form of bottling up the Cardinal's big center, Senior Paul Class, intercepting Bolivar's fastest passes, making good their follow-ups and hitting the bucket with devastating accuracy.  Their passing was flawless.  Even though he was kept "bottled-up" by 2 Midvale players, Class came through with 9 points (4 field goals and a free throw) and nobody can deny that the Cardinals played good basketball.  But, the 32-18 victory was decisive for the Blue Devils.  The scrappy little Midvale team displayed some of the closest guarding seen this season on the Legion floor.  The 1st period showed Midvale ahead 5-4, by the time halftime showed up, Midvale was leading by 8 points, 14-6.  At the end of the 3rd quarter, Midvale was nursing a 9 point lead, 20-11.  During the 4th quarter, the Blue Devils picked up another 12 points in securing their victory.

Junior guard Frank Baumholtz, Midvale's fire power, and the other guard, Delbert Keffer, were keymen in the team's offensive, scoring 15 points (5 field goals and 5 free throws) and 7 markers (3 field goals and a free throw), respectively, while center Jack Walker and forward John Baldwin devoted most of their time to breakng up Bolivar's attempts to score.
