DOVER - Traveling with a wide stride that dwarfed the best offensive thrusts of their opponents, the Bolivar Cardinals (3-0) (18-12) Saturday night cut down the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates 50-30 to win the 14th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament and carry home the Daily Reporter Trophy. As a result of their victory, the Cardinals, along with the Pirates and the Midvale Blue Devils, which overpowered the Strasburg Tigers 26-24 for the Consolation Championship prize, will represent the County League in the Sectional Tournament which will be played at Legion Hall this week. Drawings for this week's meeting will be held at the high school building tonight, according to E.W. Blackstone High school Principal and Manager of the Tournament.
Legion Hall packed with a thousand fans, was the scene of Bolivar's triumph on Saturday night when the Cardinals wound up their sweep of the tourney teams. On Friday night they upset the Midvale Blue Devils, County League Champions, 30-18 in a semi-final game. Bolivar disposed of the Pirates in the Championship tilt in much the same manner in which it turned back the Champions the night before. It was height, better shooting and better floor work. The Pirates were charged with an excessive number of turnovers as a result of their failure to obtain follow up shots against the towering Cardinals who kept the bankboards swept clean of missed shots.
Signaling the outcome of the contest at its very start, Bolivar jumped to a broad lead in a long 1st period, extended by 2 timeouts. The Cardinals grabbed off a 22-9 lead there and held the advantage without trouble the entire contest. A 20-point pace, set by Senior center Paul Class, Captain on the Cardinal club, was too stiff for the Pirates' fast break and rapidfire game when they were unable to get the 2nd and 3rd shots after missing the first. Bolivar encountered no such trouble and often potted half a dozen times at the basket before losing the ball. The Cardinals piled up the score to 30-13 at the half and to 44-19 at the 3rd quarter mark.
Class' shooting and floor play was the sensation of the game, the evening and the entire tournament. He hit the hoop for 9 baskets and 2 free throws for 20 points. Friday night he tallied 10 points against Midvale and a week ago blasted the ring with 26 points as Bolivar won their opening tournament contest against the Baltic Eagles also with a score of 50-30. His total for the tournament is 56 points in 3 games...an average of 18.7 per contest. He was hard pressed for game honors Saturday night when Junior forward Cliff Moomaw, Pirate star, clicked for 19 points, scoring one less field basket, but one more free throw. Moomaw's shooting and the guarding of Junior guard John Harmon were the standout of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville combination.
