36 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Subdues Dover St. Joseph's 46-24 (3-7-36)

DOVER - Qualifying for the District Tournament at Dennison this week, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (5-1) conquered the Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers 46-24 and the Dennison Railroaders, by a hair's breath, nosed out the Midvale Blue Devils 20-19 in finals at Legion Hall on Saturday night.

The Pirates had little trouble with the Ramblers as they led all the way; although, the parochial school team spurted in the 3rd quarter and made the game look like it would be close.  But, Sugarcreek-Shanesville spurted too.  The Pirates brought their 2-game total to 116 points, while routing Dover St. Joseph's.

Starting without Junior Cliff Moomaw, their 1st string forward, Sugarcreek-Shanesville scored from the start and only let down once.  That was in the 3rd quarter when the Ramblers ran up their score to within 3 points of tying the count.  The score at that time was 20-17.  Then Moomaw was sent into the game and he, Junior guard John Harmon, Senior Dallas Hamsher and Sophomore guard Walter Drake in rapid succession scored baskets and set the count at 38-21 at the end of the period.  Benched on fouls were guard Andreas, forward Wiegaad and guard Hartz of Dover St. Joseph's and Drake and Junior forward Charles Zechiel for the Pirates.

Harmon did the most scoring for Sugarcreek-Shanesville with 13 points (6 field goals and a free throw), while Hamsher tallied 11 (5 field goals and a free toss) and Drake scored 7 (3 buckets and a free throw).  Moomaw's 2nd-half playing netted him 5 points(2 field goals and a free toss).  Forward Lab of the Ramblers clicked with 13 points (5 field goals and 3 free throws) and shared game honors with the Pirates Hanson.  Next in line was guard Hartz with 3 field goals for a total of 6 points.
