25 - Sugarcreek Wins 3rd Annual Tuscarawas County Basketball Tournament (2-28-25)

SUGARCREEK - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (3-0) (3-1) won the undisputed championship of the county high school tournament Saturday afternoon when they administered a 32-15 defeat to the Bolivar Cardinals (2-1) (4-3) in the final contest played at the Community Hall in Sugarcreek.  The stellar performance of Dan Meyers, Sugarcreek center and Forrest Miller, right forward for the champions, were the features of the title game, which was a thriller throughout the 1st half.  It was not until the 2nd half of the final contest that the Sugarcreek team struck its usual game and drew away from the Bolivar contenders.

The best team in the league also won the county tournament championship.  The Pirates, entering the tournament with a record of 10 victories out of 11 starts, defeated Strasburg 27-14 Saturday morning  after walloping Dundee 41-9 in the 1st round.  Although Strasburg held the champions to a comparatively low margin the winners' only threatening chance came in the Bolivar 1st half and the suspense didn't last long with the Pirates capturing the win in the 2nd half.  The championship contest began at 3:15PM.  The Sugarcreek boys came on the floor first, looking just a little bit weary during their preliminary limbering up.  The Bolivar lads came out apparentley unscathed from their morning's battle with Mineral City and broadcasting an impression of satisfaction as to how things were breaking.  The confident spirit with which Bolivar entered the game for the title probably had a lot to do with the score being so close at the half.  Bolivar played to win and gave all it had to ward off defeat.

The 1st few minutes of the contest were cautiously played, the tactics of both teams indicating that the game was to be a rough affair.  Sugarcreek started the scoring when Forrest Miller made a successful free throw.  Randall Garber tied the score and Forrest Whitmer looped one through from the foul line to give Bolivar a 2-1 lead.  Forrest Miller scored a field goal for Sugarcreek followed by a free throw by Dan Meyers.  This gave Sugarcreek a 2 point lead which they held throughout the 1st half.  The scoring was on even terms, Bolivar getting an even break with the Sugarcreek outfit.  Forrest Miller and Dan Meyers did all of the scoring for Sugarcreek in the 1st half, as they did in the last half.

Randall Garber scored 2 field goals for Bolivar in the 1st half.  Gordon Kienzie 2 and a free throw and Forrest Whitmer 1 field goal and a free throw.  It was Bolivar's stellar passing game that worried the champions in the 1st half of the title contest and they were forced to solve this attack before they could proceed to stack up any kind of lead.  Bolivar's passing work in the final tilt of the tournament brands them as the best passing team in the county tournament.  However, the runners up were weak on basket shooting accuracy and the ability to follow up their shots.  The half ended 15-13 in Sugarcreek's favor.  Sugarcreek showed its true calibre on the last half of the game, outclassing the wearying Bolivar squad.  Forrest Miller and Dan Meyers kept possession of the ball with comparative ease, while Bob Neff worked in and out of the Bolivar defense.  Oliver Watson and Marcus Miller, Sugarcreek guards who were taken out soon after the 2nd half began covered their men so effectively that Bolivar was unable to score a field goal in the 2nd division of play.  Gilbert Steely and Stanley Miller the two subsititue guards for Sugarcreek took up their task with success equal to that of their predecessors.

Bolivar's only tallies in the 2nd half were free throws by Forrest Whitmer and Karl Mase, while Dan Meyers of Sugarcreek led his teammates to their barrage of the Bolivar goal.  Dan Meyers registered 4 field goals and a free throw in the final half, while Forrest Miller scored twice from the floor and once from the foul line and Bob Neff made a basket and a foul.  The Bolivar team evidently "blew up" in the 2nd half as they were practically unable to gain possession of the leather.

25 - Sugarcreek Wins Girls Exhibition Game Prior to Boys Championship Game 12-1 (2-28-25)

SUGARCREEK - Just before the boys championship game, the girls from the Tuscarawas County Girls Basketball League took to the floor for an exhibition game.  The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Girls (8-2) defeated the Tuscarawas Girls (6-4) 12-1.  The win for Sugarcreek over Tuscarawas was the  2nd time in as many weeks in a preliminary to the girls championship go.  Tuscarawas substituted for the Dundee Girls (6-2) who were forced to decline an invitation inasmuch as they had what was considered to be their hardest game of the season Saturday night.  The Sugarcreek team had little trouble with the visitors shutting them out without a field goal.  Tuscarawas' only point was a free throw by Center Elizabeth Reichman.  Thelma Schott, Sugarcreek's star center scored 5 times from the floor, while left forward Florence Wingeler added 2 free throws for the total of 12.  The half ended 5-1 with the Tusky girls fast weakening.

Although the girls championship of the county league has been decided and Sugarcreek-Shanesville has a silver trophy to exhibit for their prowess on the basketball court, there are still 6 scheduled games to be played in the county league.  Two of these contests will probably not be played, as they are scheduled with Gnadenhutten, the team that was unable to enter the boys tournament because of an epidemic in that neighborhood.

25 - Sugarcreek Takes Down Strasburg 27-14 (2-28-25)

SUGARCREEK - Batting their way through the semi-finals of the county basketball championship tournament at the Community Hall in Sugarcreek Saturday evening, Sugarcreek and Bolivar high schools earned the right to play for the county supremacy of the hardwood at 8:00PM Saturday evening.  Sugarcreek defeated Strasburg 27-14, while the Bolivar Cardinals won their game against the Mineral City Tigers by a 29-21 score.  The semi-finals were thrillers from the start, all 4 teams playing the best basketball they had shown this season despite the fact that the play was extremely rough and tumble at times.  Personal fouls were numerous, especially in the Mineral City-Bolivar clash.

The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-0) (2-1), this year's Tuscarawas County League Champions, triumphed over the Strasburg Tigers (1-1) (6-2) representation only after a stubborn habit that lasted until the final whistle sounded.  Strasburg, entering the contest as the underdog, surprised the crowded auditorium with flashy basketball play and continually threatening to turn the tables on the Pirate favorites.  Although Sugarcreek led by several points throughout the game, it was certainly not a one-sided game.  The Pirates led 14-7 at the halfway mark with neither team showing any signs of weakening.  The Tiger boys played a great game in their attempt to stop the fast-passing Sugarcreek team, but they could not halt the Meyers-Miller-Neff combination of the Pirates.  Sugarcreek tallied 5 free throws in 14 trials, while Strasburg made 8 out of 11 attempts.  The guarding of Earl Moody and the floor work of Ed Wyss and John McGonigal were features of Strasburg's play.

25 - Bolivar Shades Mineral City 29-21 (2-28-25)

SUGARCREEK - The Bolivar-Mineral City game was a thriller throughout, both teams extending themselves to their playing limits to annex a victory.  The Bolivar Cardinals (2-0) (4-2) gained the edge with their superior passing; although, the Mineral  City Tiger lads (0-1)(1-3) were getting into all of the Bolivar plays.  Forrest Whitmer was a big factor in Bolivar's victory, the fast right forward scoring 14 of his team's points and acting as the pivot for all the passing attacks.  Gordon Kienzle did some great floor work and scored 3 field goals and a free throw for his team.  Randall Garber was also playing his best game of his high school career, registering 3 field goals and a free throw while breaking up numerous Mineral City attacks.  Wyle was the star basket-getter for Mineral City scoring 5 field goals.  Center Fred McKinney scored 9 points for the Tigers caging 3 field goals from the floor and adding 3 free throws.  The game was exceptionally rough at times.  Right guard John Norris and right forward Gordon Kienzle of the Cardinals were ejected because of personal fouls.  Bolivar scored 7 of 15 free throw tries and Mineral City made 5 of 15 attempts.

25 - Strasburg Trounces Winfield 45-13 (2-27-25)

SUGARCREEK - Dundee, Tuscarawas and Winfield were eliminated by the top-heavy scores in the preliminaries Friday night with the Bolivar-Tuscarawas game being the closest of the 3 clashes.  The Strasburg Tigers (1-0) (6-1) clobbered the Winfield High School tournament guests in the final preliminary.  Winfield (0-1) took an early 3-point lead, but didn't hold on to it for long.  The half ended 14-5 in favor of the Tigers and as the game progressed the margin between the 2 teams increased.

Head Coach Ralph Lohrman, of Strasburg, was unable to be with the team being confined to his bed with an attack of influenza.  He will not be able to see the finals of the tournament.  Luke Warnes was the shining light for the Strasburg Tigers dropping in 13 field goals for a total of 26 points.  Walter Neidenthal, Edwin Wyss and John McGonigal each tallied twice while Delbert Gordon and Moody each scored once from the floor.  Free throws from Glen Jones and Moody completed the Tiger scoring.  Every Strasburg man on the court scored at leased 2 points.

25 - Sugarcreek Slams Dundee 44-9 (2-27-25)

SUGARCREEK - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (1-0) (1-1), this year's league champions and the Dundee Bulldogs (0-1) (0-3) met in the 2nd game of the tourney.  Sugarcreek walking away with a victory.  Although, Dundee started out like a house afire, they were unable to keep up and fell by the wayside long before the end of the 1st half.  The half ended 16-8.  When Dundee began to slip they tobogganed.  A feature of this contest was the guarding of Glen Wilds, the smallest guard in the county league.  Wilds played a great game for the Bulldogs team and the score would certainly have been much closer if there had been 4 more Wilds on the Dundee team.  Center Richard Dallinden and left forward Olinger Price each tallied twice from the floor and Dallinden added a free throw for Dundee's total of 9 points.  Dundee was held without a basket during the entire 2nd half.

Sugarcreek was hitting on all five as usual and didn't seem to mind the change in basket hangings or the modification of the floor rules for the tournament.  Dan Meyers, Neff and Forrest Miller ran a three-man race to pile up points.  Meyers took high-point position with 18 points by shooting 8 goals and 2 free throws.  Neff had 6 baskets and 3 free throws for 15 points.  Forrest Miller was close behind with 5 field goals and a free throw for 11 points.  The guards Oliver Watson and Marcus Miller played the game and seldem attempted a shot.  Without doubt Sugarcreek was the best team on the floor Friday night.

25 - Bolivar Blasts Tuscarawas 32-11 (2-27-25)

SUGARCREEK - The Mineral City Tigers (1-2) drew a bye, due to the fact that the Gnadenhutten Indians (2-2) was unable to put a team on the floor.  An epidemic of mumps and the grip in the Gnadenhutten school put 4 of the varsity men on the sick list.

The 1st game of the tournament was the Bolivar Cardinals (1-0) (3-2) -Tuscarawas Broncos (0-1) (0-3) go.  Indications were that this contest was going  to be a thriller, but Wolf and Benner, Tusky regulars were ruled out because of personal fouls at the end of the 1st half.  Tuscarawas led 9-8 at the half-way mark and both and both teams were traveling at top speed.  The play slowed up during the 2nd half, Tusky seemed to lose heart with 2 of their first-string on the sidelines.  Witmer, Garber and Kinzli were all going strong on the scoring for Bolivar.  Witmer scored 5, Kinzli 4 and Garber 3 field goals for the Cardinals crew.  R. Mase, playing a starring game for the Bolivar team, added another field goal to the total.  Eichel caged 2 field goals and 2 free throws, while Wolf made a field goal and 3 free throws before he was taken out of the game.  Bolivar's passing game won the contest for them.  Oxenrider of Millersburg was the referee, while Stiffler of New Philadelphia officiated with the umpire's whistle.  Wilmer and Kinzli led the Cardinals with 11 points each, while Garber punched in 8 points.  Eichel led the Broncos with 6 points, while Wolf had 5.

25 - 3rd Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament

DOVER - The 3rd Annual Tuscarawas County Class B High School Basketball Tournament will begin at 7:30PM Friday night at the Community Hall in Sugarcreek.  Four games are scheduled for tonight, the semi-finals to be played Saturday morning and the finals Saturday afternoon.  The original plan for the tournament was to have it played off on the American Legion floor at Dover, but because of a misunderstanding about the rental of the building necessitated in shifting of scenes to the Sugarcreek gym against the protests of the league members in general and especially over the objections of the Sugarcreek school authorities.

Inasmuch as Sugarcreek has become accustomed to its own floor, as have every other county team become accustomed to its own floor, the boys were reluctant to take what seemed an unfair advantage in the tournament.  To offset any such a possibility, the tournament managers have arranged to modify the floor rules to a certain extent and to put the regulation nets on the baskets instead of the leather hangings.  Eight teams will compete for the county honors, Sugarcreek High really being in a class by itself, whether on the Sugarcreek floor or elsewhere, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville outfit has won 10 of its 11 games this season with the only loss being to Mineral City on the latter's floor.  This was the opening contest of the season and was lost by one point.

LEAGUE STANDINGS FOR THE 1924-25 SEASON AS OF THIS DATE

1.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates 10-1
2.  Mineral City Tigers 6-4
3.  Tuscarawas Broncos 5-4
4.  Bolivar Cardinals  5-5
5.  Strasburg Tigers 5-5
6.  Gnadenhutten Indians 2-6
7.  Dundee Bulldogs 2-8
NOTE:  Several of the teams have 1 or 2 more games left on the schedule to play.

The teams entered in the tournament are:

Bolivar Cardinals
Dundee Bulldogs
Gnadenhutten Indians
Mineral City Tigers
Strasburg Tigers
Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates
Tuscarawas Broncos
Winfield
NOTE:  Winfield High School is not a member of the county league and is playing in the tournament on invitation, completing a card of 8 teams.

Tonight's program will be the playing off of the preliminaries.  The 4 winners in tonight's contests will play again Saturday morning and the two winners in the 2nd frame will battle for the county supremacy Saturday afternoon.

Extensive preparations are being made at the Community Hall to take care of the greatest basketball crowd that has ever attended the sport in Sugarcreek.  Last year the county backers filled the Legion Building at Dover and the Sugarcreek Auditorium is much smaller than the Dover Hall.  Special arrangements are being made for each visiting delegation and organized rooting squads will be accommodated.  The play will be in charge of Coach Curley Stiffler of New Philadelphia High School and coach Oxenrider of Millersburg High School.

The girls' teams do not play a tournament, but there will be a girls preliminary to the finals Saturday afternoon.  The girls teams also have not finished their scheduled league games.  The standings as of today:

1.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville 7-2
2.  Dundee 6-2
3.  Tuscarawas 6-3
4.  Gnadenhutten 4-4
5.  Strasburg 2-7
6.  Bolivar 0-7

24 - Tournament Proves Smaller Schools Can Turn Out Great Players

DOVER - That basketball is a popular sport in Tuscarawas County and that the smaller schools under adverse conditions turn out players that compare favorably with those of Dover, New Philadelphia and Uhrichsville was shown conclusively at the county tournament Saturday.  As a matter of fact, Dennison, winners of the  tournament, has beaten Uhrichsville twice and made Dover hustle to win during the present season.

Among the players participating in the tournament, Williams, Dennison, at forward; Bowers, Dennison, at center and Randall Weber, Strashburg, at guard, stood out as the best men at their respective positions.  Williams was high in total points scored with 22, leading Whitmer, of Bolivar by a single point.  But, in addition to being the leading point getter, Williams played excellent floor games in all three of the contests Saturday.  He can make them from any point past the middle of the floor and is able to dig the ball out for his shots without depending on his teammates.  Of the forwards, besides Williams and Whitmer, Olin Shutt, of  Strasburg and Myers of Sugarcreek looked the best.  Olin Shutt ran up a total of 19 points in his 3 games and like Williams plays a good floor game; although, he is hardly the equal of the Dennison floor ace.  Myers, of Sugarcreek, played in but one contest, since Strasburg eliminated Sugarcreek in the 1st game the latter team played, but he showed his stuff in that game by rolling up 14 of his team's 20 points.  Hill, of Dennison, with 19 points, must also be considered among the best of the forwards.

At the tip-off position, Bowers, of Dennison, consistently outplayed his opponents and was never outjumped.  Bowers scored 12 points to his opponents' two and played a good defensive game in the bargain.  Dale Shutt, of Strasburg, who made 14 points, was probably the 2nd best center.  Lanky Eisennogle, of Tuscarawas, showed up well in the Bolivar game, the only one played by his team.  Among the guards, Weber, of Strasburg, stood out as the pick of the lot.  Weber is a good floor man and the best dribbler of those taking part in the tournament; although, in that respect, Stauffer, of Dennison, ran him a close second.  But to Weber was allotted the task of taking the ball up to the opposing defense and breaking through with it.  The success of the runners-up in the tournament is  largely due to the good work of Weber.  Mase, of Bolivar, is another good guard, as is Balo, of Dennison.

Others participating in the tournament worthy of honorable mention were:

Forwards

George Mizer, Strasburg Tigers
F. Miller, Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates
Kinzie, Bolivar Cardinals
Schriever, Gnadenhutten Indians
Kopp, Tuscarawas Broncos

Centers

Martin, Gnadenhutten Indians
Julian, Newcomerstown Trojans
Garber, Bolivar Cardinals

Guards

Shearer, Tuscarawas Broncos
Glen Jones, Strasburg Tigers
M. Miller, Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates
Watson, Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates
Ripple, Mineral City Tigers
Murphy, Newcomerstown Trojans

One of the strangest disclosures made during the tournament is that not one good bank guard has been developed on any of the teams.  Most of the guards mentioned above are running guards.  To judge by the play during the tournament no team has a man capable of taking the ball off the backboard when opponents miss and directing the team play in working the ball back up the floor.  To pick a county team from the players taking part in the tournament is a difficult task.  Beyond doubt, the Dennison aggregation works better together than any other.  But, it is doubtful if the Dennison players individually would play so strong a game if the combination should be broken and the players put on other teams.  Possibly as strong a combination as any other would be Williams (Dennison) and Whitmer (Bolivar) at the forwards; Bowers (Dennison), Center and Randall Weber (Strasburg) and Stauffer (Dennison), guards.  These men would have to travel mighty fast; however, to beat out the team composed of Olin Shutt (Strasburg) and Myers (Sugarcreek), forwards; Dale Shutt (Strasburg), center and Mase (Bolivar) and Shearer (Tuscarawas), guards.

24 - Dennison Wins 2nd Annual Tuscarawas County Basketball Tournament (2-23-24)

DOVER - The Dennison High School Railroaders (3-0) won the county high school baskeball tournament held before large crowds in the Dover American Legion Building Saturday by defeating the Strasburg Tigers (2-1) (5-1) 27-14 in the finals after 7 other teams had been eliminated.  The 9 teams entered were:

Dennison Railroaders
Strasburg Tigers
Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates
Bolivar Cardinals
Mineral City Tigers
Gnadenhutten Indians
Tuscarawas Broncos
Newcomerstown Trojans
Dundee Bulldogs

Dundee forfeited to Bolivar in the 1st round.

Starting at 9:30AM Saturday, the elimination contests were run off without a hitch.  Three games were played in the morning, three more in the afternoon and the final contest between Dennison and Strasburg in the evening.  The Bolivar Cardinals, touted as one of the strongest entries, lived up to its reputation gaining the semi-finals...but, Strasburg knocked and dimmed their hopes by trimming the Cardinal team 18-12.  In the morning games, Strasburg beat Sugarcreek 24-20 in a closely contested game, Gnadenhutten ran away with Newcomerstown 20-9 and Dennison put Mineral City out of the running by defeating them 13-5.  The three best games of the tournament were the Strasburg-Sugarcreek, Strasburg-Dennison and Bolivar-Tuscarawas contests.  The tussle between Bolivar and Tuscarawas was the only one requiring overtime play to settle the argument.  Dennison proved its superiority beyond doubt by running up 59 points to its opponents combined total of 23.

Superintendent W.S. Fagley, of Strasburg acted as manager of the meeting by appointment of County Superintendent Chas Barthelmeh, under whose general direction the tournament was held.  Principal Ake, of New Philadelphia High School and Bush of Uhrichsville, officiated over the tournament games in a capable manner.  Large crowds attended each session with the finals perhaps proved the best drawing card.

The Strasburg-Dennison game was close and hard fought up to the final quarter when the down-county lads drew away from their opponents and left no doubt as to their championship calibre.  The Railroaders grabbed the lead early in the contest, when Hill caged a field goal and never lost it, leading 9-4 at the end of the 1st quarter and 13-4 at the half.  Strasburg showed best in the 3rd quarter, making 6 points to their opponents two.  But the sensational start by which Strasburg had beaten Bolivar and Sugarcreek failed to materialize in the Dennison game.  Instead Dennison put on the extra speed and left Strasburg in the dust.  Williams, Dennison's scoring ace, took the heart out of the Strasburg team by dumping 4 field goals in the final quarter with 3 of his baskets being rung up in quick succession.  The Dennison defense proved too strong for Strasburg to penetrate and the runners-up had no one who could make long shots.  Strasburg used an offensive system of short high passes which the Dennison lads grabbed out of the air quite as often as did the players for whom the passes were intended.  The Mill-Township team was unsuccessful in breaking thru the Strasburg defense also except in the final quarter.  But Dennison had several men who could cage long shots and these men kept the winners in the lead.  Olin Shutt and Randall Weber showed up best for Strasburg in the finals, while Bowers and Williams were the bright lights for Dennison.

24 - Strasburg Gets By Bolivar 18-12 (2-23-24)

DOVER - In the semi-finals, the Bolivar Cardinals ((2-1) (2-2) ran the Strasburg Tigers (2-0) (5-0) a close race until the last few minutes of play, but were unabled to stand the pace, so Strasburg began rapidly drawing away from them near the end of the contest.  Strasburg won chiefly because of superior teamplay.  Bolivar scored, but 3 field goals to their opponents' 8, but Whitmer kept his mates in the running by his accurate foul tossing.  The score was tied at 8 points apiece when the 1st half ended.  Paul and Dale Shutt led the Tigers with 7 points each.  George Mizer and Randall Weber followed that up with 2 points apiece.  Whitmer led the Cardinals with 5 points...all on foul tosses.  Kinzle followed with 3 points and Garber and Mase each had 2 points to close out the scoring.

24 - Dennison Slams Gnadenhutten 19-4 (2-23-24)

DOVER - The Dennison Railroaders (2-0) had little trouble trimming Gnadenhutten (1-1) (2-2) in the other game of the semi-finals.  The Railroaders outclassed their opponents in very department of the game and  led them all the way.  The Indians, at times, showed some pretty impressive passwork, but were unable to drop the ball through the hoop for the necessary points.  Dennison's defense held the entire team Gnaden scoreless, with the exception of Schriever who scored 4 points.  Hill and Bowers led their team in scoring with 6 points each.  Williams followed with 4 points.

24 - Bolivar Rocks Tuscarawas 20-17 (2-23-24)

DOVER - The Tuscarawas Broncos (0-1) (0-2) put up a mighty battle against the Bolivar Cardinals (2-0) (2-1) in the 1st game of the afternoon, but their efforts were in vain.  The Bolivar lads nosed them out after an overtime period.  At the end of the 2nd half the score was tied at 17 all, but a field goal by Whitmer and a foul by Kinzle sewed up the contest for Bolivar.  Tusky led at  the half 11 to 3.  In this game Whitmer scored 16 points, hanging up the individual record for this tournament and coming just 2 points short of the tournament high set by Jimmy Foster of Strasburg who had 18 points in 1923.

24 - Strasburg Nips Sugarcreek-Shanesville 24-20 (2-23-24)

DOVER - Three games of the 2nd Annual Tuscarawas County Basketball Tournament were played Saturday morning and the only upset in the predictions came when the Gnadenhutten Indians soundly trounced the Newcomerstown Trojans 20-9. The Dennison Railroaders had little difficulty in disposing of the Mineral City Tigers 13-5.  The Strasburg Tigers (1-0) (4-0) nipped the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (0-1) in the closest and by far the best game of the morning.  Myers at right forward for Sugarcreek dumped thru 14 points in the contest with Strasburg, thereby winning the individual scoring honors of the morning.  George Mizer, his runningmate, played a pretty brand of ball also.  Randall Weber of Strasburg looked as good as any guard on the floor.  Strasburg led at the half 13-11 and held the lead during the 2nd half; however,  never by very much.  This was the 1st Tuscarawas County Basketball Tournament for the Pirates, who had to drop out in 1923 due to illnesses on the team.
