47 - Strasburg Tigers Win 5th District Tournament Championship (2nd Straight) 56-39 (3-7-47)

1947 District Tournament Class B Basketball Champions.  Junior Center Clarence Yackey - Senior Guard Marvin Jeffers - Junior Forward Dean Beitzel - Junior Guard Tom Haswell - Freshman Forward John Reiger - Freshman Guard John Haswell - Junior Forward Roland Malcuit - Sophomore Guard Jim Weber - Freshman Forward Rich Froman and Freshman Guard Tom Miller.

DENNISON - Outscored only in the 3rd quarter, the Strasburg Tigers (9-0) (29-1) took another step toward the State Class B Championship throne on Friday night when they captured their 2nd consecutive District title by defeating a willing, but impotent Walnut Creek Cardinal quintet (19-3) 56-39 on the Dennison High School court before approximately 1,500 fans, of which 1,383 of whom were paid customers.  Added to the well-filled Strasburg trophy case was the Ohio High School Athletic Association's award.  It also presented the Bengals with individual gold medals and Walnut Creek with a runner-up trophy and individual silver medals.

In winning a berth in the Kent Regionals which get underway next Thursday, Strasburg assumed a 14-4 first period lead over the Cardinals and was never seriously endangered as it rolled on to margins of 30-15 at intermission and 39-28 at the 3rd quarter mark.  Junior Clarence Yackey, the elongated Tiger center, was too tall for the Cardinals to top and he paced his team's 29th decision by collecting 17 points on 7 field goals and 3 free throws.  Junior guard Tom Haswell was right on his heels with 15 points, while Senior guard Marvin Jeffers tallied 12 with Junior forwards Roland Malcuit and Dean Beitzel getting 4 each.

Walnut Creek, which was blazing hot against the Adena Warriors, was cooled off by a rather tight Strasburg defense which gave the Cardinals few clean shots at the hoop.  Forward Lowell Zook led the losers with 10 points with guard Bob Gerber getting 9 and guards Gene Miller and Rich Hostetler picking up 7 each.  Forward Doran Horrisberger, usually a high producer for the Red Birds, was held to but 4 points.  Referees A. Long and Ray Scherrer, who were jockeyed considerable by both camps, called 31 personals, 17 against Walnut Creek.  The Bengals made good on 8 of 17 free throws, while the Cardinals sank 9 of 21.

Malcuit's lay-up on the opening tip-off gave Head Coach Emmet Riley's hoopsters a 2-0 lead and they were in front the rest of the route.  After free throws by Tom Haswell and Yackey, Zook netted a hook toss and that was the closest the Red Birds came to catching up with the Tigers. A set effort by Tom Haswell, a "bunny" and tip-in by Yackey and overhead toss by Beizel made it 12-2 with Miller and Malcuit trading field goals before the quarter ended.

Jeffers tallied 3 action shots and Yackey and Tom Haswell 2 each in the end frame when Walnut Creek began to rally slightly; although, outscored 16 to 11.  Behind by 15 points when the 3rd stanza opened, the Cards scored 5 straight points to narrow Strasburg's edge to 10 and Coach Riley substituted Weber and Reiger for Malcuit and Beitzel.  The Tigers then began to hit again and with the count 37-22, Malcuit and Beitzel re-entered the game.

Starting the final period with an 11-point margin, Strasburg saw that cut to 8 before they again turned on the power as Yackey collected 8 of his points by controlling the rebounds.  With 4 minutes remaining, the Bengals were on top 46-35 and they outpointed the Cardinals 10 to 5 in the closing minutes.

The Tigers successfully solved Walnut Creek's zone defense; although, at times their passing was slipshod with the alert Red Birds frequently making interceptions.  But, Walnut Creek couldn't cope with the high passes to Yackey, who also played another good floor game as did Tom Haswell.  Despite the fact that they were outclassed, the Cardinals continued to display calm basketball and drew frequent applause with their tricky shots.

47 - The Tigers Roar In The 4th Quarter Over Yorkville 54-43 (3-6-47)

Yorkville Ductillites 1947 Basketball Team.  FRONT:  Tommy Closser (Mascot) - Lou Gaudio - Vincent Chaken - Lee Konstantinos - Ken Alessi and Ralph Stultz.  BACK:  George Kronteris - Paul Korach - Charley Hesske - Nino Lampasone - D. Briglia and Head Coach Joe Closser.

DENNISON - The Strasburg Tigers and Walnut Creek Cardinals will meet at 8PM!  That's the piece de resistance of the Eastern Ohio District Class B Basketball Tournament finals and it will be served to another capacity crowd tonight at Dennison High School Gymnasium where more than 2,000 fans last night saw the Tigers smash the Yorkville Ductillites 54-43.

Strasburg will be a slight favorite to retain its District Championship against a Walnut Creek club which spilled the Adena Warriors 69-63 on Thursday night.  However, the Holmes County Champions comprise a dangerous scoring combine and a close battle is anticipated.

But, the Yorkville Ductillites (27-4) also was a highly touted club and for a while last night the Ductillites threatened to end the streak of the Mighty Strasburg Tigers (8-0) (28-1).  However, the Jefferson County quintet didn't have it when the chips were down and Head Coach Emmet Riley's Bengals turned the game into a rout in the closing minutes.  Strasburg's triumph was all the more impressive; because, it was accomplished despite the fact that Junior Clarence Yackey, 6-5 center, drew 4 personals in the 1st twelve minutes of the duel and remained on the bench until the 3rd quarter when Yorkville was ahead 36-30.  Junior guard Tom Haswell also was out of action for a time after being charged with his 4th personal in the 3rd period.

The Tigers led 13-10 at the end of the 1st quarter, but the score was deadlocked at 24-24 at halftime and Yorkville was on top 37-36 at the 3nd stanza mark.  Senior guard Marvin Jeffers and Tom Haswell were the stars who shined the brightest as Strasburg gained their 28th victory...identical to the record it had last year when it reached the Regional Tournament at Athens before losing to the Worthington Cardinals after winning 28 straight.  Jeffers captured scoring honors with 19 points, collecting 13 in the stretch drive, while Haswell totaled 16, meshing 6 field goals in the 1st half.  Yackey finished with 12 markers.

Forward Nino Lampasone, Yorkville's leading scorer with 661 points in 30 games, 27 of which were won by the Ducts, was held to 12 by the Tigers.  Paul Korach led the losers with 13 before he fouled out in the last period.  Center Charley Hesske also departed in that stanza.  Yackey went out with 5 minutes remaining and his team in front 42-38.  Jeffers fouled out in the fading seconds.  The Tigers were awarded 29 free throws and then whipped 20 of them through the hoops, a vital factor in the victory.  Yorkville received 23 shots and made 13.

The score was tied twice in the 1st period and 4 times in the 2nd with Tom Haswell, who also played a sparkling floor game, meshing a long toss to make it 24-all as the half ended.  He garnered 8 points in the 2nd quarter to keep the Tigers in the running, while Korach paced the Ductillites with 7 points.  With Tom Haswell and Yackey, who played only 20 of the 32 minutes, on the bench in the 3rd quarter, Yorkville pulled ahead, but Jeffers tied the count at 27-all only to have the Ducts forge to the front again.  Coach Riley then sent Tom Haswell and Yackey back into action with the count 36-30 in Yorkville's favor.  Yackey caged 2 field goals and a free throw as the quarter closed 37-36.

Jeffers netted a follow-up at the beginning of the final quarter to give Strasburg the lead and the Tigers held command the rest of the route.  The count was 43-40 with 4 minutes left and it was the roaring Tigers the rest of the way.  Strasburg, playing deliberate ball tallied 6 consecutive points on baskets by Jeffers and Tom Haswell and free tosses by Tom and Sophomore forward Jim Weber.  In the remaining time they tallied 3 free throws and Junior forward Roland Malcuit caged a "bunny" for good measure.

47 - Right Down The Line

RIGHT DOWN THE LINE
With Harry Yockey
Tuesday, March 4, 1947
The Daily Reporter
Dover, Ohio

Last Saturday night, Bill Hummel, star forward for the Berlin Blue Jays' basketball team, scored 15 points, but his efforts were wasted as his team lost to Walnut Creek's Cardinals 48-36 in the Sectional finals. Tonight Hummel returns to Memorial Hall, but it will be lefts and rights he will be throwing instead of a lead of baskets.  The Berlin athlete will appear in the Golden Gloves Tournament as an opponent of Dover's Buddy Truman in the lightweight tussle.  And, if Hummel is as good with the gloves as he is with a basketball "President" is in for a rough evening.

ZZZZZ

Total attendance at this year's county Class B Tournament at Memorial Hall was 6,893, just 145 under the record of 7,013 set in 1946, but receipts were $26.78 more.  The total take according to Supt. W.E. Laws, who was the tourney manager, was $3,574.83, including program advertising, whereas the 1946 total was $3,508.05.  The 11 schools participating in the evenings received $195 each this year against $215 last year. But, expenditures were higher for the recent meet, particularly for officiating and policing.  Some of the heavier expenses were:

Federal Tax - $757.16
State Tax - $60.48
Hall Rental - $125.00
Referees - $300
Police and Fireman - $68.50
Printing - $70.94
Manager $70.00

Twice before the competing schools received $195.00 each...in 1944 and 1945...whereas in 1933, the 1st year in Supt. Law's records, they received only $50.00 each.  The attendance then was 2,722 and receipts $842.66.  Incidentally, a breakdown of this year's attendance shows 4,032 adults paid to see the meet, while the student turnout was 2,866.  Of course, considerably more saw the tournament considering the passes which were issued.  The best one-night attendance was the 1,454 who turned out for the 4th session.  The next night only 477 were on hand, the only time the attendance was below 1,000.

ZZZZ

Leading scorer of the Yorkville Duetillites which will oppose the Strasburg Tigers Thursday night in the Eastern District Tournament at Dennison is Nino Lampasone, returning forward from last year, who has meshed 661 points in 30 games for an average slightly above 22 percent.  When the Duetillites, who have lost 3 games bowed to Wheeling Central Catholic, West Virginia's parochial Champions, they missed on 17 free throws and when they lost to Weirton, West Virginia, they failed to hit on 24.

The Adena Warriors, the Walnut Creek Cardinals' opponent, is headed by Ed Staniewicz, who has averaged 25 points in 25 contests.  His highest output in a single game was 52, best sole performance of those boys in the District event.  The timber topper of the Cardinals is Doran Horrisberger.  Adena's 4 losses were to Yorkville, giving the Ductillites some measure of revenge for last season when they beat Adena twice, but then lost to the Warriors in the Sectional Tournament.  Of course, Yorksville would like nothing better than to meet and defeat Adena in the District meet.  But, Strasburg and Walnut Creek are going to have something to say about that.

The Strasburg Tigers to date have amassed 1,397 points in 28 games for an average of 49.9.  They permited their foes 813 points, or 29 per contest.  The record includes 7 tournament games in which Junior Clarence Yackey, the Bengals' fine 6-5 center, meshed 151 points or 21.4 per contest.  Junior guard Tom Haswell is running 2nd to Yackey with 72 markers.  Yackey's scoring ability makes him a marked player every time he steps onto the floor, but teams which regard him only as a point-making threat are under estimating his value.  In his tourney appearances to date, Yackey has been the Tigers' mainstay in rebound play and has also proved a good team player, passing the ball well and also performing admirably defensively.

47 - Strasburg Drops Tusky Once Again...65-42 (3-1-47)

DOVER - Strasburg's powerful and high-flying Tigers, who whipped the Tuscarawas Broncos 65-44 in Saturday night's Sectional finals, will encounter a rugged Yorkville Ductillites quintet on Thursday night at 7:30PM in the Eastern Ohio District Class B Basketball Tournament at Dennison High School.  The Walnut Creek Cardinals, which defeated the Berlin Blue Jays 45-36, will encounter the Adena Warriors at 7:30PM Wednesday night.

The pairings were made Sunday at drawings in Dennison.  The 2 winners from the Lafferty Sectional won the right to make the initial draw.  Yorkville was 1st and drew No. 3 with Adena drawing No. 1.  Strasburg was 3rd and drew No. 4 opposite Yorkville leaving Walnut Creek to oppose Adena.

Both games will precede Class A contests with Dover and Uhrichsville clashing after the Walnut Creek-Adena duel and Cambridge meeting Zanesville after the Strasburg-Yorkville battle.  The Class B finals will be staged Friday night at 8PM and the Class A on Saturday night.

Strasburg boasts the best record of the 4 Class B teams, having won 27 and lost 1 to date.  Yorkville, which defeated Adena 78-75 in Saturday night's Sectional finale at Lafferty, has won 27 and lost 3.  Adena captured 24 of 28 games, all its losses being administered by Yorkville.  Walnut Creek has triumphed in 18 of 21 games.

A 34-point scoring spree by Junior Clarence Yackey, 6-5 center and wheelhorse of the Strasburg Tigers (7-0) (27-1), carried the Tigers to their triumph over the Tuscarawas Broncos (4-2) (20-6).  Yackey harvested 13 field goals and 8 free throws as the Bengals compiled quarter advantages of 13-10, 25-22 and 43-28.  Junior guard Tom Haswell trailed him with 10 points, while Senior forward Andy Steve led the Broncos with 17 markers as his teammate, center Loyal Bishop, obtained 11 points.

Tuscarawas, Consolation Division winner in the county tournament, remained in the running until midway in the 3rd period.  Then the Tigers of Head Coach Emmet Riley began to pull away and once the pressure was off they turned the contest into a rout.  Tusky lost Junior Joe Kerns, substitute guard, midway in the 3rd stanza and Senior guard Dale McDonald in the opening minute of the 4th quarter.  Strasburg's Senior guard Marvin Jeffers drew his 5th personal at the halfway mark in the 4th and Tom Haswell went out with 3 minutes remaining.

The Tigers capitalized on 17 of 31 free throws as 22 personals were called against Tusky, while the Broncos made good on 14 of 23 free throws, awarded as 17 personals were charged to Strasburg.  Yackey, whose height around the backboards proved an unsurmountable handicap for the Broncos, who opened the scoring with a tip-in, but McDonald tied the score with a push shot and Tuscarawas went ahead 6-2.

A push shot by Yackey and one hander by Tom Haswell regained the lead for Strasburg and it never relinquished it.  However, the Broncos rallied from a 21-12 deficit in the 2nd quarter to trail only 24-22 just before the half ended.  Early in the 3rd frame, the Tigers led only 28-25, but consecutive action shots by Junior forward Dean Beitzel, Tom Haswell and Yackey gave the Bengals a 9-point edge and from that point on there was no doubt as to the outcome.

47 - Strasburg Slams St. Mary's 65-24 (2-28-47)

DOVER - It will be the Strasburg Tigers vs Tuscarawas Broncos at 8PM and the Berlin Blue Jays and Walnut Creek Cardinals at 9PM when the finals of the Northeastern Ohio Sectional Class B Basketball Tournament is held tonight in Memorial Hall here and the customers probably will be hanging on the rafters for this wind-up of the local scholastic cage play.

Strasburg last night resumed where it left off Thursday in beating the Millersburg Knights 67-23 by eliminating the Dennison St. Mary's Blue Wave 65-34 to reach the finals.  The Walnut Creek Cardinals, making its 1st Sectional start after drawing a bye, knocked the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates out of the running in a 57-46 battle, while the Berlin Blue Jays defeated the Dennison Railroaders 44-39.

The Strasburg-Tuscaraswas encounter will pair the county tournament winner and defending titlist against the Consolation Division victor with the Tigers favored to repeat a 51-42 triumph recorded over the Broncos in the final game of the regular season.  The Cardinals gets a weak nod over Berlin, having defeated that club 42-40 to win the Holmes County Tournament.

The Strasburg Tigers (6-0) (26-1) hit the court in search of their 26th win of the season, but required one quarter to "feel out" the Dennison St. Mary's Blue Waves (12-10) last night and then turned on the power to rout the Blue Waves as the star tigerman, Junior center Clarence Yackey, surpassed his Thursday night performance by 2 points in harvesting 22 points (9 field goals and 4 free throws) to pace the victory.  The Tigers leaped to a 13-8 1st quarter lead.  In the 2nd stanza, the Strasburg offense increased their scoring output to 16, while the defense held the Blue Waves to only 6 more points.  Strasburg...29-14.  The Tigers continued to increase their scoring output after intermission to 21 points as St. Mary's copped another 8 points in the 3rd quarter.  Strasburg...50-22.  In the 4th period, the Blue Waves could not gain any ground as the Tigers hit the hoops for 15, while St. Mary's had 12.

Junior guard Tom Haswell meshed 15 points for the Tigers, while their only Senior, guard Marvin Jeffers, gathered 10 markers.  Forward D. Trolio paced Dennison St. Mary's with 9 points.  Strasburg doubled the Blue Waves' output from the field by hitting 22 field goals and also caged 21 of 33 free throws as 25 personals were called on the losers.  The Blue Waves hit on 12 of 29 free tosses.

47 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Falls 57-46 To Walnut Creek (2-28-47)

DOVER - The Walnut Creek Cardinals (17-3), despite the margin of victory over the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (3-2) (20-6), the game had the customers standing on their feet.  The Cardinals flew to a 2-point advantage 9-7 in the 1st quarter.  In the 2nd period, the Red Birds increased their margin to 9 points as the scoreboard read 26-17 by intermission.  The Pirate swords were raised in the 3rd stanza as their offense rose to the occasion by outscoring Walnut Creek 15-13 cutting the Cardinal lead to 7 points going into the 4th and final quarter.  Walnut Creek...39-32.  The Cardinals regained their composure and added an additional 4 points to their lead as the Pirates began abandoning their ship.

In summary, Sugarcreek-Shanesville led only once by a 6-5 count and several times was 10 points in arrears, but the Pirates began to rally late in the 3rd stanza and midway in the final stanza they made their followers' hopes flare by trimming Walnut Creek's advantage to 44-40.  But, the Holmes County Champions staged a rally of their own to pull ahead again even after they lost center Gene Miller.  And, with 3 of its stars being ejected on personals, the Pirates couldn't muster another punch thus the ship began to sink.

Doran Horrisberger, brilliant Walnut Creek forward, paced the decision with 20 points (7 field goals and 6 free throws); although,he was hurt in the 2nd quarter when his head hit the court.  However, he was back in the lineup for the 2nd half and personally accounted for the victory with 13 points in the 4th stanza.  Forward Lowell Zook and guard Bob Gerber chipped in with 14 points apiece.  Co-incidentally, it was another Doran...center Doren Immel...who led Sugarcreek-Shanesville, also scoring 20 points.  Forwards Ed Hamsher tallied 10 markers, while Bill Weiss was held to 8.

47 - Tusky Mans-Up In The 3rd Stanza Against Carrollton 53-45 (2-27-48)

DOVER - Strasburg's defending Champions, Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Berlin return to Sectional Class B warfare at Memorial Hall tonight when the Dennison St. Mary's Blue Wave, Walnut Creek Cardinals and Dennison Railroaders make their initial appearances as the result of 1st-round byes.  Eliminated from the running last night were the Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers, Millersburg Knights, Carrollton Warriors and Malvern Green Hornets.

The 4 games waged last night before 1,312 paid fans, produced only one good contest and it resulted in St. Joseph's defeat 43-36 at the hands of Berlin.  Strasburg romped over Millersburg 67-23, Sugarcreek-Shanesville toppled Malvern 51-42 and Tuscarawas beat Carrollton 53-45 to gain the finals.

The Carrollton Warriors (5-13) unexpectedly gave the Tuscarawas Broncos (4-1) (20-5) a close run for 2 quarters, but the Broncos of Head Coach Jim Rogers pulled away in the 3rd period land won without too much trouble.  The score was deadlocked 9-9 at the end of the 1st period, but Tuscarawas managed a 3-point advantage 24-21 at intermission.  In the 3rd stanza, the offense of Tusky maned-up and score 20 points as the Warriors scored 14 points for a 9 point lead 44-35 going into the final quarter.

The score was tied at 2-2, 9-9 and 21-21 before Tusky took a lead which it never relinquished.  Center Loyal Bishop sparked the decision with 16 points, while Seniors guard Andy Steve caged 11 and forward Dale McDonald collected 10.  Guard Wayne Williamson, who returned to the Carrollton team recently after being ill, was high for the losers with 10 points.

I'VE GOT IT - Forwards Joe Keister (44) of Malvern and Ed Hamsher of Sugarcreek-Shanesville duel for a rebound as temmates wait to lend a hand during the Northeastern Ohio Sectional Tournament game at Memorial Hall last night.  The Pirates whipped the Green Hornets 51-42.

DOVER - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (3-1) (20-5) had little trouble last night at Memorial Hall in eliminating the Malvern Green Hornets (10-14), who upset the Sherrodsville Warriors, League Champions, in the Carroll County Tournament finals.

The Pirates charged to an 18-8 advantage in the very 1st quarter.  With a 10-point lead starting out the 2nd period of play, Sugarcreek-Shanesville's offense dropped in another 12 points and their defense held Malvern to just 9 points increasing the advantage to 13 by intermission...Sugarcreek-Shanesville...30-17.  The Green Hornets stung the Pirates by cutting 2 points off the Ottmen point edge outscoring them 13 to 11...Pirates...41-30.  In the final quarter, Head Coach Bill Ott's cagers were outscored once again 12 to 10, but the Pirate 1st stanza lead was to large for Malvern as the 10-point 1st period lead held.

Forward Ed Hamsher and center Doren Immel were the pace-setters for Coach Bill Ortt's crew with 15 and 14 points, respectively.  Forward Bill Weiss, usually the Pirate's top scorer, tallied only 9 markers, but guard Alton Whiddon meshed 10.  Center John Reed and guard David Russell led Malvern with 11 points each.

47 - Northeastern Sectional Basketball Tournament

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers, defending titlists, will meet the Millersburg Knights on Thursday night at 6PM in the 1st game of the Class B Northeastern Sectional Basketball Tournament at Memorial Hall, while the Dover St. Joseph Ramblers, Tuscarawas Broncos and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates will see action the same night as a result of drawings made Monday night at Dover High School.

None of the Tuscarawas County quintets will be opponents in the 1st round for which the Dennison Railroaders, Dennison St. Mary's Blue Wave and the Walnut Creek Cardinals, the Holmes County Champion, drew byes.

Sugarcreek-Shanesville, the Tuscarawas Tournament runner-up, will collide with the Malvern Green Hornets, upset victor over the Sherrodsville Wildcats, Carroll-County finals, Thursday night at 7PM.  Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers will engage the Berlin Blue Jays, which bowed to Walnut Creek in the Holmes County finals at 8PM and Tuscarawas, this county's Consolation Division winner, will meet the Carrollton Warriors at 9PM.

The Dover St. Joseph's-Berlin victor will meet at Dennison High School Friday night at 7PM, Walnut Creek will oppose the winner between Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Malvern at 8PM and Dennison St. Mary's will collide with the Strasburg-Millersburg victor at 9PM.  Those battles will lead to the 2-game finals, the winners of which will enter the Eastern Ohio District meet at Dennison.

*****

Strasburg, boasting the best record of the 11 entrants at 24-1 and Tuscarawas 19-5 looms as favorites to clash in the upper bracket finals.  In the 6-team lower bracket, Walnut Creek has the standout record 16-3, but a real scramble for berths in the finals is anticipated in that division.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville has a 19-5 record, while Berlin has an 18-5 record, while Dover St. Joseph's owns a 12-6 mark and Malvern stands at 10-13 and Dennison owns an 8-11 record.

Millersburg, Strasburg's initial foe, has won only one game (1-18), Dennison St. Mary's 12-9 andCarrollton 5-12.

Dennison was the 1st team to draw and selected the bottom rung of the lower bracket, while St. Mary's which was next, picked the top place on the upper bracket.  Tusky was 3rd and took the last position in the upper bracket.  Strasburg came next and Head coach Emmet Riley elected to go into the upper bracket with Tusky.

St. Joseph's and Sugarcreek-Shanesville then drew in that order.  Berlin came next and picked the spot opposite St. Joseph's.  Walnut Creek chose a bye and Carrollton elected to oppose Tusky.  Malvern was 10th in the draw and picked Sugarcreek-Shanesville as its opponent, leaving Millersburg as the automatic foe of Strasburg.

Admission for the tournament will be 40 and 60 cents, tax included.  Ed Sherman and McCoy Mariner of Muskingum College will be the officials and Harold Ramsey, assistant coach at Dover High School, will be the tourney manager.  Each school will be permitted 13 passes.

RIGHT DOWN THE LINE
With Harry Yockey

Another renewal of the Strasburg-Tuscarawas rivalry is anticipated now that they are in the same bracket of the Class B Sectional meet starting here Thursday.

Strasburg must hurdle Millersburg and then Dennison St. Mary's and Tuscarawas must win over Carrollton to throw the 2 county powers together in Saturday's climatic battle for a berth in the District tourney next week at Dennison.  The odds favor both county quintets because their records are far superior to the other 3 clubs.

Anything could happen in the lower bracket.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville looms stronger than Malvern, but the St. Joseph's-Berlin duel is a game of a different color and well may be rated a toss-up.  Should the Pirates whip Malvern they then will face a toughie in Walnut Creek, reigning quintet in the Holmes County tourney.  Dennison's Railroaders, who played both Class B and A teams and whipped New Philadelphia in its last start also will be one to watch.
