47 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Wins See-Saw Battle With Tusky 39-37 (2-18-47)

DOVER - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-0) (19-4) (44-27) won by a bounce over the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-1) (17-5) (30-29) 39-37 at Memorial Hall last night in one of the best games of the night so far. Although the Pirates defeated the Broncos 52-40 during the regular season, it barely won last night with Tusky outscoring the Pirates 10-8 in the last 4 minutes of play only to miss deadlocking the score with 5 seconds left when a side shot by Senior guard Andy Steve skipped across the hoop into the Bucs' possession.

It was a battle in which the score was tied 4 times and the lead changed hands 5 times before Sugarcreek-Shanesville went ahead to stay with 2 minutes of the the 3rd period remaining.  With 3 minutes of the final stanza left, the Pirates enjoyed an 8-point margin only to see it dwindle under Tuscarawas' rally.

Forward Bill Weiss was the mainstay in the Pirates' victory, meshing 16 points and battling valiantly under the bankboards.  He was trailed by center Doren Immel who gathered 11 markers.  Center Loyal Bishop topped Tuscarawas with 16 points.  The Broncos' Junior forward Floyd Blackwell fouled out midway in the 3rd quarter, while Senior forward Dale McDonald, who snared 7 points, went out with 1:43 of the game remaining.

Tuscarawas gave its followers encouragement in the 1st quarter when it surged ahead 11-4 as the Pirates were unable to find the range.  The Broncos led 13-7 at the quarter stop and late in the 2nd frame were on top 17-13.  But, a free throw by forward Ed Hamsher and field goals by guards Harvey Showers and Alton Whiddon who played sparkling defensive games, put Sugarcreek-Shanesville ahead 18-17 at the half.

It was nip-and-tuck for the 1st 6 minutes of the 2nd half, but Immel broke a 22-22 tie with 2 free throws and the period closed with the Pirates leading 26-23.  After Junior forward Joe Kerns meshed a follow-up at the start of the 4th quarter, Weiss canned a field goal and a free toss and then traded fielders with Bishop.  After the automatic timeout, Whiddon came through with 2 charity tosses and Weiss added a lay-up for a 37-27 margin.  Then came the spine-tingling finish.

Referees Nick Frascella and Vally Virodis called a total of 37 personals in the game, 24 against Tusky.  The Pirates cashed in 13 of 33 charity throws, while the Broncos hit on 7 of 13.
