47 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Falls 57-46 To Walnut Creek (2-28-47)

DOVER - The Walnut Creek Cardinals (17-3), despite the margin of victory over the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (3-2) (20-6), the game had the customers standing on their feet.  The Cardinals flew to a 2-point advantage 9-7 in the 1st quarter.  In the 2nd period, the Red Birds increased their margin to 9 points as the scoreboard read 26-17 by intermission.  The Pirate swords were raised in the 3rd stanza as their offense rose to the occasion by outscoring Walnut Creek 15-13 cutting the Cardinal lead to 7 points going into the 4th and final quarter.  Walnut Creek...39-32.  The Cardinals regained their composure and added an additional 4 points to their lead as the Pirates began abandoning their ship.

In summary, Sugarcreek-Shanesville led only once by a 6-5 count and several times was 10 points in arrears, but the Pirates began to rally late in the 3rd stanza and midway in the final stanza they made their followers' hopes flare by trimming Walnut Creek's advantage to 44-40.  But, the Holmes County Champions staged a rally of their own to pull ahead again even after they lost center Gene Miller.  And, with 3 of its stars being ejected on personals, the Pirates couldn't muster another punch thus the ship began to sink.

Doran Horrisberger, brilliant Walnut Creek forward, paced the decision with 20 points (7 field goals and 6 free throws); although,he was hurt in the 2nd quarter when his head hit the court.  However, he was back in the lineup for the 2nd half and personally accounted for the victory with 13 points in the 4th stanza.  Forward Lowell Zook and guard Bob Gerber chipped in with 14 points apiece.  Co-incidentally, it was another Doran...center Doren Immel...who led Sugarcreek-Shanesville, also scoring 20 points.  Forwards Ed Hamsher tallied 10 markers, while Bill Weiss was held to 8.
