DENNISON - The Strasburg Tigers and Walnut Creek Cardinals will meet at 8PM!  That's the piece de resistance of the Eastern Ohio District Class B Basketball Tournament finals and it will be served to another capacity crowd tonight at Dennison High School Gymnasium where more than 2,000 fans last night saw the Tigers smash the Yorkville Ductillites 54-43.

Strasburg will be a slight favorite to retain its District Championship against a Walnut Creek club which spilled the Adena Warriors 69-63 on Thursday night.  However, the Holmes County Champions comprise a dangerous scoring combine and a close battle is anticipated.

But, the Yorkville Ductillites (27-4) also was a highly touted club and for a while last night the Ductillites threatened to end the streak of the Mighty Strasburg Tigers (8-0) (28-1).  However, the Jefferson County quintet didn't have it when the chips were down and Head Coach Emmet Riley's Bengals turned the game into a rout in the closing minutes.  Strasburg's triumph was all the more impressive; because, it was accomplished despite the fact that Junior Clarence Yackey, 6-5 center, drew 4 personals in the 1st twelve minutes of the duel and remained on the bench until the 3rd quarter when Yorkville was ahead 36-30.  Junior guard Tom Haswell also was out of action for a time after being charged with his 4th personal in the 3rd period.

The Tigers led 13-10 at the end of the 1st quarter, but the score was deadlocked at 24-24 at halftime and Yorkville was on top 37-36 at the 3nd stanza mark.  Senior guard Marvin Jeffers and Tom Haswell were the stars who shined the brightest as Strasburg gained their 28th victory...identical to the record it had last year when it reached the Regional Tournament at Athens before losing to the Worthington Cardinals after winning 28 straight.  Jeffers captured scoring honors with 19 points, collecting 13 in the stretch drive, while Haswell totaled 16, meshing 6 field goals in the 1st half.  Yackey finished with 12 markers.

Forward Nino Lampasone, Yorkville's leading scorer with 661 points in 30 games, 27 of which were won by the Ducts, was held to 12 by the Tigers.  Paul Korach led the losers with 13 before he fouled out in the last period.  Center Charley Hesske also departed in that stanza.  Yackey went out with 5 minutes remaining and his team in front 42-38.  Jeffers fouled out in the fading seconds.  The Tigers were awarded 29 free throws and then whipped 20 of them through the hoops, a vital factor in the victory.  Yorkville received 23 shots and made 13.

The score was tied twice in the 1st period and 4 times in the 2nd with Tom Haswell, who also played a sparkling floor game, meshing a long toss to make it 24-all as the half ended.  He garnered 8 points in the 2nd quarter to keep the Tigers in the running, while Korach paced the Ductillites with 7 points.  With Tom Haswell and Yackey, who played only 20 of the 32 minutes, on the bench in the 3rd quarter, Yorkville pulled ahead, but Jeffers tied the count at 27-all only to have the Ducts forge to the front again.  Coach Riley then sent Tom Haswell and Yackey back into action with the count 36-30 in Yorkville's favor.  Yackey caged 2 field goals and a free throw as the quarter closed 37-36.

Jeffers netted a follow-up at the beginning of the final quarter to give Strasburg the lead and the Tigers held command the rest of the route.  The count was 43-40 with 4 minutes left and it was the roaring Tigers the rest of the way.  Strasburg, playing deliberate ball tallied 6 consecutive points on baskets by Jeffers and Tom Haswell and free tosses by Tom and Sophomore forward Jim Weber.  In the remaining time they tallied 3 free throws and Junior forward Roland Malcuit caged a "bunny" for good measure.
