47 - Bolivar Downs Port 49-38 (2-20-47)
DOVER - The Bolivar Cardinals (3-1) (16-6) (39-31) outscored the Port Washington Purple Riders (2-2) (11-8) (11-34) 15 to 8 in the 3rd quarter to take a permanent lead after a nip-and-tuck battle in the 1st half as the Cardinals locked up the victory 49-38 in a Consolation Division battle that had the Purple Riders play their final tournament game of the year. Bolivar also won the seasonal game by a whopping 73-45 score.
Bolivar posted a 6-5 lead in the 1st quarter of play. The Cardinal one-point lead continued to the end of the 2nd period 17-16. In the 3rd stanza Bolivar began to pull away from Port Washington after outscoring the Purple Riders by 7 points. The Riders couldn't make up the 8-point Red Bird lead in the 4th quarter and their tournament play came to an end in one of the best tourney showings by Port Washington ever.
The score deadlocked 6 times and the lead changed hands 3 times in the 2nd stanza. During the 2nd half, Port knotted the count 17-17 and 19-19, but a follow-up by guard Dick Mase put Bolivar in front and the Cardinals were never headed.
Forward Junior Murray sparked the victory and won game honors with 18 points (4 field goals and 10 free throws). Junior Lundenberger was 2nd high scorer for the Cardinals with 10 points as 7 players contributed to the triumph. Junior guard Jack Davies paced Port with 12 points, while Junior forward Harold Gallion totaled 10 markers.
