DOVER - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (3-1) (20-5) had little trouble last night at Memorial Hall in eliminating the Malvern Green Hornets (10-14), who upset the Sherrodsville Warriors, League Champions, in the Carroll County Tournament finals.
The Pirates charged to an 18-8 advantage in the very 1st quarter. With a 10-point lead starting out the 2nd period of play, Sugarcreek-Shanesville's offense dropped in another 12 points and their defense held Malvern to just 9 points increasing the advantage to 13 by intermission...Sugarcreek-Shanesville...30-17. The Green Hornets stung the Pirates by cutting 2 points off the Ottmen point edge outscoring them 13 to 11...Pirates...41-30. In the final quarter, Head Coach Bill Ott's cagers were outscored once again 12 to 10, but the Pirate 1st stanza lead was to large for Malvern as the 10-point 1st period lead held.
Forward Ed Hamsher and center Doren Immel were the pace-setters for Coach Bill Ortt's crew with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Forward Bill Weiss, usually the Pirate's top scorer, tallied only 9 markers, but guard Alton Whiddon meshed 10. Center John Reed and guard David Russell led Malvern with 11 points each.
