NOTE:  BAUMHOLTZ TO QUIT BASEBALL IF HE DOESN'T CLICK WITH THE REDS

When Frank Baumholtz, Midvale's most prominent sports citizen, departs about March 1st for Tampa, Florida and the Cincinnati Reds' baseball training camp he will be taking a decisive fling in the diamond sport.  A star forward for the Cleveland Rebels professional basketball team, the 27-year-old Baumholtz will bid for a centerfield post with the Reds.  If he doesn't click, Frankie declares he will forget baseball and confine his athletic activity to basketball because "I don't want to be a minor League baseballer".

Frank is no bush leager in basketball.  After leading the Midvale Blue Devils High School to the semi-finals of the State Tournament in 1937 when he set a tournament mark by scoring 27 points, Baumholtz entered Ohio University.  A lefthanded hook artist, Frank rolled up 1,095 points for the Bobcats in 3 years to set a school mark and gain the little All-American Cage Team.  He also was chosen the outstanding player in the 1941 National Invitation Tournament in New York; although, his team was beaten by New York University in the finals.  During a 4-year stretch in the Navy the 5-10 Baumholtz played basketball and baseball at Great Lakes before heading for Saipan and Iwo Jima as pilot of a ICI mortar ship.

Frank's baseball performance at Great Lakes resulted in a contract with the Cincinnati Reds, who sent him to Columbia, SC of the Sally League for seasoning.  Baumholtz was the 2nd best hitter in the circuit with a .343 mark and led the loop with 43 doubles.  Frankie now is the leading scorer for the Rebels, averaging 14 per contest.  He will be able to compete in the playoffs of the Basketball Association of America before leaving for his baseball stint.

Frankie the son of Frank Baumhotz of Midvale.
