DOVER - The stage is set for Tuesday night's semi-finals of the 25th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Tournament with the Strasburg Tigers completing the field Saturday night when it turned back the Gnadenhutten Indians 44-29 to earn a berth against the Port Washington Purple Riders.
In the Consolation Division battles, the Bolivar Cardinals advanced Saturday night by eliminating the Stone Creek Golden Panthers from further competition in a 60-46 game, while the Midvale Blue Devils knocked the Mineral City Tigers out of the running 47-43.
The Strasburg Tigers (2-0) (22-1) (67-17) continued their streak and chalked up their 14th consecutive triumph and 22nd in 23 games when they dropped the Gnadenhutten Indians (1-1) (11-11) (38-30) into the Consolation Division ranks. The Tigers Defense crushed the Indians during their season clash 38-9.
Gnaden, who had surprised Bolivar 45-41 in their 1st tournament contest, gave Strasburg a close run until midway in the 2nd quarter when the Tigers began to pull away. The score was deadlocked 8-8 at the close of the opening period, but Junior center Clarence Yackey's free throw and Senior guard Marvin Jeffers lay-up pushed the League and defending Champions ahead to stay. They were on top 24-13 at intermission as Yackey tallied 6 straight points on 2 field goals and 2 free tosses. The 3rd stanza count was 35-22.
The 6-5 Yackey, in addition to giving Strasburg control of the rebounds, also set the scoring pace with 15 points. Junior forward Roland Malcuit followed with 11 and Jeffers caged 9. Sophomore forward Gene Montague was high for the Indians with 10 points, while Sophomore guard Jerry Virtue had eight. Strasburg caged 6 of 18 free throws and the Indians cashed in 10 of 21.
