47 - Midvale In A Squeaker Over Mineral City 47-43 (2-15-47)

DOVER - The Mineral City Tigers (0-2) (4-14) (9-36) put a scare into the Midvale Blue Devils (1-1) (11-12) (42-22), but the upset came up short 47-43 in a Consolation Division contest at Memorial Hall in one of the best games of the night. In their one and only seasonal battle, the Tigers won 24-21.
Ahead only 42-41 with 4 minutes left, Midvale outscored Mineral City 5 to 2 in the remaining time to stay in the chase for Consolation Honors. The game was clearly the best of the evening with the Blue Devils leading 6-5 at the end of the 1st quarter. In the 2nd period, the Tigers worked themselves in front 19-17. Both teams battled hard in the 3rd stanza with Midvale coming back to lead 35-32.
A 21-point splurge by Sophomore forward Jack Ford, who caged 7 field goals and 7 free throws, sparked the Blue Devils decision. Senior forward Walter Beahm followed up with 9 markers. Senior guard Fred Wigfield gathered 14 points and Sophomore forward Dan Lechner 11 markers for Mineral City.
There were 48 personal fouls called in the contest, 26 against the Tigers which lost both its high scorers. Mineral City caged 15 of 27 free throws, while Midvale made good on 17 of 28.
