COLUMBUS - Their quest for State Class B Basketball Honors ended with elimination in a semi-final game Saturday afternoon. Head Coach Pete Wolfe and his Midvale Blue Devils (9-1) (21-6) returned to the classroom today. The Blue Devils were defeated 44-36 by the Canfield Cardinals (25-4) which went into the final to lose to Glenford High School 48-28 in the title game.
Coach Wolfe and his team, winners of the Eastern Ohio District title at Dennison, will be guests of honor at the Annual Midvale High School Athletic Banquet which will be held at the school in April.
The team returned from Columbus yesterday after Calvin "Tod" Hostetler and Adrian "Ace" Ford were named members of the mythical All-Ohio teams picked by sports writers covering the tournament. Hostetler was named at a guard position on the Class B 1st Team and Ford was accorded a forward post on the 2nd Team.
Forward Chet McPhee, All-Ohio on the Canfield team, was a one-man disaster to Midvale's chances in the semi-final game Saturday afternoon. McPhee chalked up 8 field goals and 3 free throws for 19 points and scoring honors as he paced the Cardinals to a 12-7 first quarter lead and was still leading 24-19 at intermission.
A great Midvale rally in the 3rd period, sparked by Hostetler and Ford, erased the Canfield edge and sent the teams into the home stretch tied at 32-all, but a sudden burst of speed carried the victors to the fore and Midvale was unable to recover. Ford led the Blue Devils' scoring with 16 points (8 field goals), while little Hostetler followed with 7 points (3 field goals and a free throw).
