58 - 2nd Best Teams At District?

BRILLIANT - The Stage is set for the District Class A Basketball Tournament at Brilliant tonight and carrying the Dover Sectional Tournament's colors into the warfare will be the supposedly "2nd best" teams, the Gnadenhutten Indians and the Big Prairie-Lakeville Bulldogs.  Those 2 clubs were rated behind the Midvale Blue Devils and the Berlin Black Panthers in pre-tournament forecasting, but they came on to upset the heavy favorites.

The Indians finished 2nd to the Blue Devils in the Tuscarawas County League race and also was runner-up to the same club in the county playoffs.  But, then Gnaden turned the tables by eliminating the Diablos 80-67 in the Sectional Tournament.  The Bulldogs were tied with the Walnut Creek Cardinals for 2nd place behind the Black Panthers in the Holmes County League.  Big Prairie-Lakeville then lost to Berlin in the county playoff finals, but then ousted Berlin in the Sectional.

The Bulldogs of Big Prairie-Lakeville engages the Dillonvale Night Riders in the 7:00 opener at Brilliant, while the Tribesmen of Gnadenhutten collides with the Powhatan Indians at 8:45.  Head Coach Dick Scott of Gnaden probably will stick with his usual starting Indians.  They are 5-9 Larry Clark and 5-8 Ed Shull, in the guard positions, 5-11 Ron Bradley and 6-0 Larry Gooding the forwards and 6-1 Tom Roth at center.  Bradley is a Junior  and the others are all Seniors.

This is the 2nd straight year the Tribe had made the District Tournament.  Last year it losst to the Midvale Blue Devils in the finals.  They are hoping to make it all the way this season with the Canton Regional Tournament as the next goal.  Head Coach Robert E. Lee of Big Prairie-Lakeville probably will start 5-10 Senior Vaughn Flinner, 5-10 Senior Dave Miller at the guard positions with 5-11 Senior Wayne DeWitt and 5-9 Sophomore Ken Bauer at the forwards and 6-0 Sophomore Dan Dye at center.

CLASS AA.  In the District Tournament at Martins Ferry, Zanesville's mighty Blue Devils will tangle with Toronto at 8:00.  The Blue Devils are ranked 3rd in the State by Associated Press writers have won 20 straight contests.  The Cadiz Cardinals' 92-72 winner over the New Philadelphia Quakers in the finals of the Dennison Sectional Tournament, will battle the Tiltonsville Ramblers in their District opener tomorrow night.
