33 - 11th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament
DOVER - Tournament time...the home stretch of the basketball season down, which all scholastic teams sprint for high honors, has arrived. It will be escorted into Tuscarawas County for a 3-weekend stay at Legion Hall on Thursday night when the 1st game of the county Class B meeting is called. With 12 teams entered, the county tournament has reached a new size. Three of the 12 will be qualified for the Sectional Class B Tournament at Legion Hall next weekend which will have 19 teams entered in its competition. Winners there will advance to the District meet at Dennison on the 3rd weekend.
The Strasburg Tigers, which just finished its 3rd consecutive League Season undefeated and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates, 2nd-place club in the County League, are favored, as the tournament play opens, to travel successfully through both the County and Sectional meetings. Both towns have teams that would cause many Class A quints plenty of trouble. They have been cast in separate brackets and should meet in the finals. Strasburg high's team, coached by Paul M. Roby, will receive the Sanitary Milk Company Trophy for winning the League Championship. Walter Geib local manager of the company, made the arrangement. The tournament winner will receive the traditional S. Toomey Company Trophy, while members of the winning team will also receive individual medals presented by Walter E. Leiser, Inc. The latter is a new feature of the meet.
Sugarcreek-Shanesville is scheduled to play the Stone Creek Panthers who is the infant member of the County League in the 1st game Thursday at 6:30PM. The Gnadenhutten Indians will meet the New Cumberland Trojans who will be playing in its 2nd Tuscarawas County Tournament.

Doors at the gym will be open at 5:45PM, 45 minutes before the 1st game is scheduled. Admissions will be 25 cents for students and 35 cents for adults. M.P. Lohrman, Superintendent of the Strasburg Schools, is manager of the tournament. Earl "Monk" Gross of New Philadelphia and "Ike" Boone of Canton will referee all games.
Sessions in the Sectional Class B Tournament, which will be held at Legion Hall on March 2, 3 and 4, will be held on Thursday and Friday evenings and on Saturday afternoon and evening. Of the 19 teams entered, 6 are from Tuscarawas County: 3 from this week's tournament, Dover St. Joseph's, Dennison and Newcomerstown; 3 are from Holmes County: The tournament winner and runner-up and Millersburg; 3 from Carroll County: 2 tournament teams and Carrollton; 3 from Harrison County: 2 tournament teams and Cadiz; 2 from Jefferson County: both tournament teams and 2 from Coshocton: a tournament team and Sacred Heart Catholic High School. Drawings for Dover's Sectional, which will be managed by E.W. Blackstone of Dover High School, will be held at Legion Hall on February 27th at 7:30PM.
The 4 teams qualifying in the meeting will go to Dennison to participate in the District Tournament with 4 teams from the Caldwell Sectional Meeting there.
