35 - Tuscarawas Tournament Update

DOVER - Without a single close contest to relieve the tedium of a 4-hour session, the 13th Tuscarawas County Annual Class B Basketball Tournament opened at Legion Hall last night with 4 games and today went into the 2nd and 3rd sessions with 6 games scheduled and 2 more to follow.

LAST NIGHT'S RESULTS:

Bolivar 45 - Port Washington 20
Midvale 29 - Ragersville 17
Sugarcreek-Shanesville 44 - Baltic 22
Dundee 33 - Stone Creek 14

All 4 games went to the favorites.  Today's games were scheduled to start at 1PM and run through to 10PM with 4 slated for this afternoon and an equal number tonight.  Losers in last night's games were sent back through the brackets to the Consolation Tournament which will qualify a 3rd team to accompany the winner and runner-up of the regular competition to the Sectional Tournament at Legion Hall 2 weeks hence.

Fans, either "wise" to the uninviting schedule or giving in to the weather on one of the winter's worst nights, stayed away from the opening session in large numbers.  Consequently the tourney, which will eventually...at its close next week...name a new champion.  Last year's champions were the Strasburg Tigers.  C.H. Hannahs of Nelsonville, who worked the Class A Sectional Tournament at New Concord last year, was the referee.  Today Earl D. "Monk" Gross of New Philadelphia was in charge.  Today's games began before a small, though nonetheless, enthusiastic crowd.

TODAYS SCHEDULED GAMES AT THIS POINT

Gnaden vs Strasburg
Mineral City vs Tusky
Port Washington vs Ragersville (C)
Baltic vs Stone Creek (C)
Bolivar vs Midvale
Sugarcreek-Shanesville vs Dundee

The last 2 games will be determined by the winning teams.
