38 - Strasburg Rocks Gnaden 42-25 (2-19-38)
Strasburg High School Tigers Senior Guard Charles "Babe" Reiger led his team over the Gnadenhutten Indians 42-25 on Saturday night with 11 points (5 field goals and a free throw).
DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers (2-0) (40-8), the League Champion, again experienced difficulty in getting its powerhouse operatng at top speed in the game against the Gnadenhutten Indians (1-1) (16-18) in the Tuscasrawas County Class B Basketball Tournament.
The Indians, paced and sparked by Junior forward Leland Goettge, actually outscored the Tigers in the 1st period and led by a 7-6 count; although, Strasburg reversed the situation and was commanding a 17-13 lead when the half ended with the ball game still belonging to the team with the best show of strength in the stretch. The Tigers produced that strength and rolled up a 25-15 advantage during the 3rd period, the Indians being limited to 2 free throws, one by Junior guard Earl Crites and the other by Senior forward Oliver Kohl.
Personal fouls started taking a toll of the Tigers in the 3rd period when Senior forward Paul "Pete" Haswell and Junior center Lloyd "Mule" Haas were both sent to the showers where they were joined in the 4th period by Babe Reiger, the Tiger's star guard. Eight-year Head Coach Paul M. Roby's Reserve strength...the best any of the League mentors has been able to produce...kept the Burgers in the contest and then went on to victory. Gnaden lost Senior center Ed Kohl in the 4th period on fouls.
Senior Bob Deible, Strasburg substitute center and Goettge stood out in the game for their respecive teams. In addition to acting as the sparkplugs and exceptional floormen, the pair turned in their share of the points. Goettge tallied 14 for his team and Deible 10 points. Goettge's 14 was the game's high (game honors) and Reiger led Strasburg with 11markers.
