Strasburg Tigers' Class B District Basketball Champions gather around Head Coach Paul M. Roby in the Tigers dressing room after their victory over the Berlin Hawks in the finals at Dennison Saturday night, all prepared for their trip to Columbus this week. Roby and his Tigers have set a basketball record for Tuscarawas County which will be hard to equal. Many fans jammed the room after Strasburg's triumph.
Strasburg Tigers Senior Forward Paul "Pete" Haswell burned the nets for 10 points (5 field goals) which matched his teammate, Garver Wallick, who also hit for 10 points, in securing the Tigers' victory over the Berlin Hawks 42-25 for the Southeastern Class B District Basketball Championship.
Strasburg Tigers Sophomore Guard Garver Wallick tossed in 10 points (5 field goals) along with "Pete" Haswell to bring home the bacon for the Tigers' 3rd District Championship.
DENNISON - Senior forward Paul "Pete" Haswell and Sophomore guard Garver Wallick led the Tigers to their victory over Berlin, but a steady attack delayed by passing that earned one short shot after another actually carried the team. "Pete" Haswell lost to the Tigers in the 4th period on personals and Wallick battled to tally 10 points each and in addition, Haswell limited brilliant Berlin guard Hitchcock to but 3 field goals. Friday night the Berlin star tallied 8 field goals against a touted Hopewell combination.
The Strasburg Tigers (9-1) took a 5-3 lead in the opening quarter and then moved into a commanding 17-11 lead in the 2nd stanza when Senior guard Charles "Babe" Reiger contributed 6 points on a field goal and 4 free throws, while Haswell, Senior guard Bob Deibel and Junior Maurice Bayer, the latter, a substitute center, each picked up a basket. The Burgers outscored their opponent 12-8 in the 2nd period, but in the 3rd "poured it on" with a 16-7 margin that gave them a 33-18 advantage as the final quarter opened. Even while they coasted and they outscored the Berlin Hawks 9-7, Head Coach Paul M. Roby sent his entire 2nd string into the game, in the final minutes of play.
Haswell and Wallick scored their 10 points on 5 field goals each. Hitchcock leading Berlin with a similar total, scored 3 field goals and 4 free throws for 10 markers. The Strasburg Tigers are the 1938 District Tournament Champions! The Tigers move on to the State Tournament for the 3rd time in 16 years.

NOTE:
Head Coach Paul M. Roby...the most Championship coach in the county...has had his Tigers in the Distict finals 4 times in his 8 years at the Strasburg helm. In 1932 the Tigers went to the finals, but lost to the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates. In 1933 they won over the Dennison Railroaders and made the Columbus trip. Last year they lost out in the finals to the Midvale Blue Devils.
This year Roby and the Tigers followed the same path that Midvale took to the Championship last season. Upset in the county tournament, the Tigers were sent off into the Consolation Tournament, but came out and then survived the most gruelling of all tournaments in the Dover Sectional Tournament that had Strasburg, Dennison and Sugarcreek-Shanesville all in the same bracket.
Take a look at Coach Roby's Championships since he went to Strasburg 8 years ago:
1931 - County League
1932 - County League-County Tournament-District Runner-up
1933 - County League-County Tournament-District Tournament
1934 - County League-County Tournament
1935 - Tied for the County League
1936 - None
1937 - County League-County Tournament
1938 - County League-Consolation Tournament-District Tournament
NOTE 2:
The New Philadelphia Quakers (Class A) basketball team are also going to the State Tournament this year which includes Coach Woody Hayes.
