38 - 1st All-County Class B Basketball League All-Star Teams

FIRST TEAM:  Left Row - Ed Kohl and Charles "Babe" Reiger...Middle - Glen Lebold...Right Row - Marne Blick and Paul "Pete" Haswell.

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers places 2 and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates, Bolivar Cardinals and Gnadenhutten Indians 1 each on the 1st All-County Class B Basketball League Team picked for the Daily Reporter by the coaches of the 11 teams in the circuit.  And on the 2nd team, the Midvale Blue Devils comes in for 2 places and Strasburg, Sugarcreek-Shanesville and the Baltic Eagles for 1 place each.  Thirteen other players in the League were at least nominated, winning for each of them Honorable Mention; a distinct honor because they have the knowledge they were picked by coaches with respect for their ability and from a field that contained 77 candidates...players...assuming that each varsity squad carries 7 men.

The men placed on the 1st team by Strasburg's Champion Tigers are Senior forward Paul "Pete" Haswell and Senior guard Charles "Babe" Reiger, both members of last year's Daily Reporter All-Tournament Team.  The Pirates from Sugarcreek-Shanesville placed forward Marne Blickensderfer (Blick) for the benefit of the box score.  Bolivar scored with guard Glen Lebold and Gnadenhutten copped the center post with Senior Ed Kohl one of its League-famous pair of cousins.  On the 2nd team are John Hawkins of Midvale and Phil Hostetler of Sugarcreek at the forwards; Senior Dick Regula of Baltic at Center and Senior Bob Deible of Strasburg and Bill Stevenson of Midvale at the guards.

To the sports writer who sat in his office of a Saturday morning and heard by telephone of the prowess of the various individual members of the League's teams, the All-County presents just about what he would have picked.  All of which means the coaches turned in a good job.

In Haswell and Blick the 1st team has a pair of top performing forwards...fast, aggressive, good shots and effective in their ball-handling.  Particular is this latter true of Haswell who probably was shaded in the scoring department by Blick whose efforts, almost individually, kept the Pirates in the League race and powered them to 2nd place in the final standings.  Ed Kohl, the center, polled 9 of a possible 10 votes for the 1st team.  Such an accomplishment needs no further comment.  He came nearest of all to being a unanimous selection.  Odd though it may be, the one coach who didn't vote him a 1st team position didn't consider him good enough for the 2nd team.  Reiger and Lebold at the guards present a stalwart pair of defense men; although, Lebold has been lining up at forward the greater part of the season in Bolivar's games.  It is the thought here that he received so many votes for guard because he was assigned the "toughies" of opposing teams.  Reiger, if he wants to display it, has what it takes.  He is at once an excellent defensive man and scoring threat.  In addition he is the "sparkplug" and steadying influence of the champions.  No matter the turn of the tide, he's just Reiger...loafing if he pleases, working if it suits the occasion.

All in all the team represents the maximum of offensive power and a good balance for defense...if one is needed for a powerhouse that includes almost every high scorer of the loop.  And that may be a tip that coaches still like to see points zipping through the hoop.  The 2nd team, too, seems to have about the right men; although, there are some of us who would cast a vote...regardless how sentimental...for such as Dick Machan, the Dundee star who is a one-man team in himself.  Machan did gather an Honorable Mention.

Plenty of fans who have a habit of attending most of the League games in which their favorite team takes part, may disagree, but they should remember that the coach, at one time or another, saw all the boys and that most of them played last year...and their performances then may have carried a little weight in the balloting.

Those winning Honorable Mention are Jack and Bud Ross and Wayne Wineman of Bolivar; Bernard Turrin and Dick Belknap of Midvale; Oliver "Ollie" Kohl of Gnadenhutten; Don Hershberger of Sugarcreek; Charles Cardani and Earl Johnson of Tusky; Dick Machan and Paul Snyder of Dundee; Ed Lorenz of Stone Creek and Harry Regula of Baltic.
