38 - Strasburg Falls To Willshire!!!

The photo was snapped during the Strasburg Tigers-Willshire Panthers game at the State Tournament in Columbus.  It shows the Tigers never gave up; although, fighting an uphill battle against a team of great size.  Under the basket Junior center Lloyd "Mule" Haas (#4), is seen getting away a jump shot which was good for 2 points, while Senior forward John Miller (#3) and Senior guard Charles "Babe" Reiger (#11), were at hand to followup if the shot had been missed.

STRASBURG - Although Willshire, Strasburg's 1st opponents at the State meet, were giants in stature; they were sadly outclassed by the foot-work and ball-handling of the Tigers.  Thus the size of the opponents together with the inability of Strasburg to hit the hoop on good shots, spelled defeat and ended a very successful season for the Strasburg Tigers (9-2)..

38 - Strasburg Goes To State For The 3rd Time (3-12-38)

Strasburg Tigers' Class B District Basketball Champions gather around Head Coach Paul M. Roby in the Tigers dressing room after their victory over the Berlin Hawks in the finals at Dennison Saturday night, all prepared for their trip to Columbus this week.  Roby and his Tigers have set a basketball record for Tuscarawas County which will be hard to equal.  Many fans jammed the room after Strasburg's triumph.

Strasburg Tigers Senior Forward Paul "Pete" Haswell burned the nets for 10 points (5 field goals) which matched his teammate, Garver Wallick, who also hit for 10 points, in securing the Tigers' victory over the Berlin Hawks 42-25 for the Southeastern Class B District Basketball Championship.

Strasburg Tigers Sophomore Guard Garver Wallick tossed in 10 points (5 field goals) along with "Pete" Haswell to bring home the bacon for the Tigers' 3rd District Championship.

DENNISON - Senior forward Paul "Pete" Haswell and Sophomore guard Garver Wallick led the Tigers to their victory over Berlin, but a steady attack delayed by passing that earned one short shot after another actually carried the team.  "Pete" Haswell lost to the Tigers in the 4th period on personals and Wallick battled to tally 10 points each and in addition, Haswell limited brilliant Berlin guard Hitchcock to but 3 field goals.  Friday night the Berlin star tallied 8 field goals against a touted Hopewell combination.

The Strasburg Tigers (9-1) took a 5-3 lead in the opening quarter and then moved into a commanding 17-11 lead in the 2nd stanza when Senior guard Charles "Babe" Reiger contributed 6 points on a field goal and 4 free throws, while Haswell, Senior guard Bob Deibel and Junior Maurice Bayer, the latter, a substitute center, each picked up a basket.  The Burgers outscored their opponent 12-8 in the 2nd period, but in the 3rd "poured it on" with a 16-7 margin that gave them a 33-18 advantage as the final quarter opened.  Even while they coasted and they outscored the Berlin Hawks 9-7, Head Coach Paul M. Roby sent his entire 2nd string into the game, in the final minutes of play.

Haswell and Wallick scored their 10 points on 5 field goals each.  Hitchcock leading Berlin with a similar total, scored 3 field goals and 4 free throws for 10 markers.  The Strasburg Tigers are the 1938 District Tournament Champions!  The Tigers move on to the State Tournament for the 3rd time in 16 years.

NOTE:

Head Coach Paul M. Roby...the most Championship coach in the county...has had his Tigers in the Distict finals 4 times in his 8 years at the Strasburg helm.  In 1932 the Tigers went to the finals, but lost to the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates.  In 1933 they won over the Dennison Railroaders and made the Columbus trip.  Last year they lost out in the finals to the Midvale Blue Devils.

This year Roby and the Tigers followed the same path that Midvale took to the Championship last season.  Upset in the county tournament, the Tigers were sent off into the Consolation Tournament, but came out and then survived the most gruelling of all tournaments in the Dover Sectional Tournament that had Strasburg, Dennison and Sugarcreek-Shanesville all in the same bracket.

Take a look at Coach Roby's Championships since he went to Strasburg 8 years ago:

38 - Strasburg Eakes-Out Win Over Philo 30-29 (3-10-38)

Strasburg Tigers Senior Forward Paul "Pete" Haswell led the Tigers with 11 points (5 field goals and a free throw) while collecting game honors in a very close victory over the Philo Electrics 39-29.

DENNISON - The Strasburg Tigers (8-1), Tuscarawas County's only entry in the Class B list narrowly missed an upset fate in its contest with the Philo Electrics of Muskingum County, the Tigers coming out 30-29...by the very skin of their teeth.  The victory qualified the Tigers for the finals of their class tomorrow night.  Strasburg will meet the winner of tonight's Class B semi-final between the Berlin Hawks of Holmes County and Hopewell of Muskingum County.

Getting off to one of those slow starts which characterized their play in the county tournament, Head Coach Paul M. Roby's Burgers went scoreless in the 1st 6 minutes of play, while the Philo crew piled up a 6-0 lead and appeared capable of turning back the powerful Tiger quintet.  The Tigers rallied in the last 2 minutes of the quarter; however, and drummed up 6 points on 2 baskets by Senior forward John Miller and one by Senior guard Charles "Babe" Reiger.  The Electrics; meanwhile, was keeping pace and held a 12-6 lead at the end of the period.  Philo's violations of the rules and the resultant free throws put the Tigers back in the game in the 2nd period when they outscored the Muskingum County team 6-3 and moved up to within 3 points of the leaders at the halftime intermission.  Strasburg tallied 4 free throws and one field goal...the latter by Reiger, during this period.

Led by Senior forward "Pete" Haswell, the Tigers made their big bid in the 3rd period when they finally settled down and stasrted to play ball.  Haswell looped 4 field goals and a free throw through the hoop.  Reiger tossed a free throw and a field goal and Miller and Senior guard Bob Deibel each contributed a free throw as the Tigers moved out front, tallying 13 points to Philo's 5 and taking a 26-20 lead as the period ended.

Strasbrug went to its total score of 30 points early in the final quarter and then spent most of its efforts staving off Philo's stretch sprint.  Failure of which was due largely to the missing of 4 free tosses and the relaxation of one player when he was in line for an easy sucker shot on a fast break play...the latter came just before the end of the game when the score stood at 30-29.  The player was "asleep" and the arrival of the ball from the other end of the floor woke him up, but his fumbling enabled "Babe" Reiger to arrive on the scene and spoil the shot.  Reiger, too, had been caught napping.

Haswell's scoring in the 3rd period carried him to scoring honors with 11 points, while Miller and Reiger each collect 7 markers.  Center Brannon and guard M. Johnson led the Philo attack, also with 7 points each.

DOVER - Basketball in ahighly palatable concoction was served up to 1,500 screaming fans at Memorial Hall Saturday night as the Strasburg Tigers of Tuscarawas County and the Berlin Hawks of Holmes County survived the gruelling, heart-breaking Class B Section Tournament and simultaneously acquired the honor of competing in the Eastern District Championship finals at Dennison this weekend.

A fighting Berlin Hawks outfit just managed to slip out of the place position and into first-money with a 28-26 edge over the Baltic desperate Eagles.  It was the 2nd straight 28-26 game for the Eagles who found themselves on the losing end this time around.

The Baltic Eagles (3-2) started like whirlwinds in their fray, swamping Berlin 8-1 in the 1st chukker, but were held to a lone point in the 2nd to trail 14-9 at halftime.  The losers gained a marker during the next period and were headed at 3 quarters 20-15, though they were holding a 20-9 disadvantage at one point.  The losers then put on a belated spurt to come up on the Holmes County boys 26-24 and Senior center Dick Regula, back in the game after resting too long with 3 personals on him, tied up the ball game with an action shot.  Allen "Red" Miller then put Berlin on the Eastern District Tournament floor lists for the 1st time in history as he iced the game with a long ark shot from the field.  Each outfit had 4 free throws out of 11 shots.

38 - Strasburg Stops Blick And The Pirates 36-33 (3-5-38)

Strasburg Tigers Senior Forward Paul "Pete" Haswell led his team to victory and a trip to the District Tournament by slowing down the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirate ship and clipping the Pirates 36-33.  Game honors were shared by Haswell and Pirate Senior forward Don Shepfer.

DOVER - The Strasburg dynamic Tigers (7-1) out-distanced the sparkling Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (5-1) to come up with a 36-33 three-point decision.  Senior forward Paul "Pete" Haswell was again the unstoppable light for the Burgers, his turn-around shot plaguing the losers all evening to give him a total of 16 points, while Senior forward Don Shepfer dipped into the spotlight's glare with 16 points of his own for the opposition.

The game, played in a teething uproar both on and off the court the entire distance, opened with a Sugarcreek-Shanesville free throw by center Arden Miller, followed by a pair of the same by "Pete" Haswell that gave the winners a lead which was never headed the remainder of the evening.  Senior forward Don Shepfer then added another free toss for the Creekers and Haswell dropped in the 1st field goal of the game and Strasburg led 4-2.  Junior center Lloyd "Mule" Haas sank another and guard Phil Hostetler one for the losers which was immediately erased by Haas' 2nd goal to give Strasburg an 8-4 advantage.  Shepfer buried a fielder, then Haswell hit for one and forward Marne "Blick" Blickensderfer connected for 2 free throws.  Score 10-8.  Senior guard Bob Diebel contributed his basket and Shepfer another as the quarter ended 12-10.

Haswell began the 2nd period with a bucket and guard Don Hershberger and Blick duplicated to tie the score at 14-14.  Senior forward John Miller then whipped in 2 quick goals for the Tigers before Shepfer dropped a free throw.  Senior guard Charles "Babe" Reiger followed with a basket, evened by Shepfer and Haswell collected another again as the Tigers led 22-17.  Shepfer came right back with a brace of free throws.  Junior center Maurice Bayer hit a free toss for Strasburg and Shepfer tallied another from the field.  Score 23-21.  Here Strasburg had possession of the ball with the time clock at the zero point and Haswell let one fly 10 feet back of the center line and the buzzer blared the end of the half as the ball cut through the strings with the Burgers leading 25-21.

Sugarcreek's Blick started the 3rd with a goal and Diebel buried a free throw before Shepfer hooked another basket.  Haswell and Reiger hit fielders for Strasburg and Hostetler nailed one for the losers, followed by another by Reiger and one by Sugarcreek's Blick as the quarter ended 32-28.  This shot was the longest of the tournament.

Haswell had a free throw to open the final and Hostetler a goal for the Creekers.  Shepfer then tallied a free toss and a 2-pointer to tie up the score 33-all, as Hostetler left the game for Sugarcreek on 4 personal fouls.  Haswell connected with another basket to put his mates in front 35-33.  At this point all proceedings were halted when irate fans raided the floor and jostled the referees.  There was one minute left to play when officials cleared the court and Strasburg toyed with the ball until the fracas ended with Haswell sinking a free throw.  Free throw percentges were:  Strasburg 6 out of 11 and Sugarcreek-Shanesville 9 out of 15...Shepfer getting 6 for 6.

38 - Strasburg Marches Over Dennison 40-21 (3-4-38)

Strasburg Tigers Senior Forward Paul "Pete" Haswell racked up game honors by dumping in 17 points (8 field goals and a free throw) and leading his team to a romp over the Dennison Railroaders 40-21 in Friday nights Sectional Tournament.

DOVER - If the kibitzer in the 3rd row knew what he was talking about when he said that if 2 basketball squads are well matched it isn't the teams so much as the night, then it certainly was the Strasburg Tigers (6-1) big night at Memorial Hall last night when a booming capacity crowd watched the raging-hot Tigers rip, claw and generally annihilate Dennison High School's reputed powerful Railroaders 40-21.  The decisive victory placed the victors in the Class B Sectional finals here tonight against the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates with the other final spot being held down by the Berlin Hawks and the Baltic Eagles who turned in a squeeze win in last evening's opener when they out-lasted a scrapping Clark High School quintet, 28-26.

Strasburg was the red-hot outfit last night, headed by a tireless "Pete" Haswell who was shooting them out of his hat to bury 8 field goals and a free throw for a total of 17 points.  Without getting as tough on offense as they did; however, the Tigers would have railroaded their opponents right back home anyhow, for they displayed a defense that was nothing short of superb.  Dennison, strong, fast, smooth and hard-working, was held to a single action shot in the 1st and 4th quarters and was restricted to 6 field goals throughout the entire game.

Haswell started things with a goal which was quickly followed by one by Senior guard Charles "Babe" Reiger before Dennison's forward Lecce sank a free throw.  Score 4-1.  Haswell came back with 2 more fielders and center Galbraith sank a foul toss for the opposition.  Score 8-2.  Forward Wolfe dropped a free throw for Dennison and Haswell made a foul toss which was followed by 2 railroader free throws by Lecce and Wolfe.  Score 9-5.  Galbraith hooked a basket and Deibel came right back with the same as the quarter ended 11-7.  Haswell opened the 2nd with a fielder and Galbraith hit a foul toss which was immediately duplicated by Tigers Senior forward John Miller.  Score 14-8.  Wolfe bagged Dennison's 2nd basket of the game and Junior center Lloyd "Mule" Haas dropped a free throw for Strasburg which was followed by anothr Dennison field goal by Lecce.  Haswell hit as the half ended with the Burgers leading 17-12.

Reiger and Haas connected with goals to begin the 3rd quarter and guard Galantine came back with one for Dennison to move the score to 21-14.  Senior guard Bob Deibel and Junior forward Maurice Bayer hit field goals for Strasbsurg and Galbraith had a foul toss which was followed by a basket by Haswell.  Guard Sells scored a field goal for Dennison and Haas a free throw.  Galbraith sank 2 free tosses for the losers which Haswell erased at the close of the quarter with a bucket.  The Tigers now led 30-19.  Lecce opened the final quarter with a basket which ended Dennison's scoring for the season.  Haswell and Miller added field goals and Senior guard Bob Raica a free toss.  Score 35-21.  Deibel buried a free throw, Bayer dropped a field goal through and Sophomore forward Garver Wallick ended the game with one of the same.  Score 40-21 (The 2nd straight 40-21 game for Strasbug).  Free throw percentges were:  Strasburg 6 out of 12 and Dennison 9 out of 20.

Baltic Eagles Senior Forward Adrian "Andy" Gerber led his team to their 1st ever Sectional Tournament game with 12 points (6 field goals) in winning a narrow 28-26 victory over the Clark basketball team from Holmes County.

DOVER - The Clark baseketball team from Holmes County put up a fine fight against the Baltic Eagles (3-1), but came up 2 points short falling 28-26 in their Sectional Tournament game.  Adrian "Andy" Gerber gathered in the triumph for the unsteady Baltic crew with 6 baskets and a total of 12 markers, while Clark can blame its defeat on foul shooting with 4 hits out of 17 tosses.  The contest was ragged, but close enough throughout to make it good.

The boys were all even at the 1st period, 5-5 and Clark surged ahead at halftime, 18-15, only to be held to 2 points the following period with Baltic taking a 22-20 advantage.  Both squads scored nip-and-tuck with 6 markers apiece in the final stanza.  Clark's T. Mullet, 200 pounds of center, dragged down scoring honors with 13 and would have had twice as many had the Holmes County lads built their attack around his pivot play.

Gerber of Baltic led his team with 12 points with Senior center Dick Regula adding 8 more markers.  T. Mullet led Clark with 13 points.  His teammate, forward Wagers, followed up with 8 points.

38 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Destroys Millersburg 51-28 (3-3-38)

Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates Forward Marne "Blick" Blickensderfer hit the hoops for 15 points (5 field goals and 5 free throws) in leading his team to a 51-28 crushing victory over the Millersburg Knights.

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates wham-de-doodled down victory Lane at Memorial Hall last evening as the Sectional Class B High School Basketball Tournament broke loose to a roaring start before 1,500 customers, but that old tourney jinx hounded Dover's St. Joseph's right out into the street again with its annual 1st-round loss.  The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (5-0) humiliated the Millersburg Knights 51-28 and Holme County's Berlin Hawks had just enough to decision the Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers 36-34.

The team that looked really tough; however, was Sugarcreek-Shanesville.  Boasting not a regular from last season, the boys displayed a power-house last night without seeming to actually turn on the heat.  They grabbed an 8-1 lead at the 1st quarter and clinched the game with a 27-13 control at halftime and a 38-21 advantage at the 3-quarter mark.  The Millersburg scramblers were beaten before they pulled their shoes on, judging from the rangy, potential power that was there and spiritless exhibition that they turned in; although, the winners were by far the rightful winners.  They are coming along fast...they play hard and smart...they are well-balanced and smooth.

Game honors was held by Pirate forward Marne "Blick" Blickensderfer who poured in 15 points, while forward Don Shepfer was right behind with 11 markers.  Millersburg was led by their center, Fair, with a total of 6 points.

38 - Strasburg Wallops Magnolia 40-21 (3-3-38)

Strasburg Tigers Senior Forward Paul "Pete" Haswell led all scoring with a total of 8 points (4 field goals) as the Tigers ran-over the Magnolia Panthers 40-21.

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers (5-1) pounced on a hapless Magnolia Panther crew in the 1st Sectional Tournament contest, in workman-like fashion 40-21.  Much better than that final score indicates, Magnolia put a fast and scrappy quintet on the floor.  They were every bit as polished as the Tigers, but the latter's hard-working defense and Reserve power turned the thing into a rout.

Those rampaging Tigers from Strasburg were sluggish at the go, being held 7-7 in the 1st quarter by the Panther boys.  But they pushed on to double up on their opponents, 18-9 at halftime and took a 22-15 advantage at the 3rd quarter mark.  And when Head Coach Roby turned loose those baby Tigers in the final session it was the end of the season for Magnolia.  The losers were out-scored 18-6 during this period and the Strasburg substitutes gathered 14 of the markers.

Strasburg's scoring ace, Pete Haswell won game honors with 8 points, while Junior center Maurice Bayer, Junior center Lloyd "Mule" Haas and Senior guard Charles "Babe" Reiger followed their teammate with 6 points each.  Magnolia's guard Corbett hit 6 points, while his teammates, forward Sickafoose, center Casper and guard Vanvoorhis each hit the hoops for 4 points.
