34 - Tournament Observations
DOVER - Earl D. "Monk" Gross, New Philadelphia's mayor, laid aside municipal affairs last night and delved into basketball affairs..all of which were somewhat more strenuous, physically speaking. But, "Monk"...once a great star himself...proved that he can still take it. "Monk" officiated all 4 games of the 1st round. Fast games, slow ones, rough ones, mild ones. He had his variety. He will referee all regular games during the Class B Tourney.
All available space was utilized at Legion Hall and about 500 was turned away at the turnstiles. Last night's house was again well filled. Hugh Diehl and his associates, custodians of the Legion Hall building did a rushing business at the canteen between halves and games. There was a ban on beer. Automobiles lined the curb in the vicinity of the building as visitors arrived long before starting time at 7PM. Hundreds have been viewing the trophies and team pictures in Ress Bros. Cigar Store. The Daily Reporter's trophy purchased from Joe Cox of the Herff-Jones Co. was added to the collection today. W.E. Laws of Midvale was kept hopping about the hall. He's the man in charge and was responsible for the continuity of last night's games.
The mode among girl cheerleaders is back to skirts. Last year, if you remember, all girl cheerleaders wore men's trousers instead of skirts, but this year only the Strasburg young lady wears the trousers. Cheerleaders were zealous in their activities last night as they kept the crowd active.
Speaking about cheering, Strasburg got a full quota of unadulterated booing when it began a "stalling" game after getting ahead of the Tuscarawas Broncos by a good margin. Instructed by Head Coach Paul M. Roby, the Tigers used good basketball jugment to break up the Tusky zone defense...in which John Studer, Strasburg scoring ace, was kept bottled up by 2 and 3 Bronco men.
