DOVER - Before a colorful crowd of over 1,500 fans which filled Memorial Hall to capacity, the 17th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B League Tournament got under way last night with a near upset by the Bolivar Caradinals and a terrific battle by the Port Washington Purple Riders featuring the show.

The Strasburg Tigers defeated Bolivar 29-24 from the free throw line; Tuscarawas finally put on a last period rally to drop Port Washington 43-27; The Gnadenhutten Indians clicked to take the Stone Creek Panthers 39-21 and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates downed a stubborn Mineral City Tigers 40-24.

With 3 regulars not in uniform, but sitting on the bench beside Head Coach Charmis Davis who temporarily suspended them for "insubordination" the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-0) (11-18) had a very hard time defeating the Port Washington Purple Riders (0-1) (4-18).

Port, which did not win a single game the entire year in League play, stepped out in the 1st period to grab a 10-8 lead, stayed in front throughout the 2nd period, but fell behind 21-19 at the half and by 28-24 at the 3rd period.  Tusky clicked in the final period to score 15 points to Port's 3 to win the victory and a sigh of relief went up from the Broncos bench...where regulars Fred Blackstone, Les Johnson and Clarence Rolli got little thrill out of seeing their teammates pushed to the limit.

Senior forward Earl Johnson led the Broncos in scoring with 14 points and walked away with game honors; although, his teammates Senior center Bill Arthurs and Senior Bob McDonald were right behind him with 13 and 10 points, respectively.  Sophomore Jim Goettge was high for the Purple Riders with 5 classy field goals for 10 markers.
