DOVER - The victory of Head Coach Bob Lanzer's Dundee Bulldogs (1-0) (13-20) over the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (1-1) (29-16), Tournament Champions of last year, was the high spot of the 2nd game on Saturday when the Bulldogs upset the Pirates 27-25. A truly half-pint Dundee substitute turned the trick with a basket caged from mid-court in the last minute of play.
The field goal was tossed by forward Milton Fruchey, so small that the Pirates refused to believe he could hit the backboard from the center of the court and who was in the game because Coach Lanzer had no substitutes eligible to enter the game again. As he pitched the basket he put his team into the lead 26-25 and just before the game ended Dick Machan scored a free throw for the final point.
The Pirates hopped to a slender 6-5 lead in the 1st period and maintained their 1-point advantage as the half arrived 16-15. Dundee fell behind in the 3rd quarter which ended 23-20, but quickly caught up in the final stanza and succeeded in tying the score 24-all, but Bulldog center Denver Smith fouled guard Bob Becker who sank the free throw to give the Pirates a 25-24 edge just before Fruchey heaved the pay-off shot. To many, Dundee's triumph seemed an upset, but officials refused to accept it as such, pointing out the fact that the Lanzermen had beaten the Pirates during the regular season.
Dundee's Senior guard Dick Machan, All-County in the pick of the coaches, led the scoring with 11 points. Becker was high for the Pirates with 8 markers.
