39 - Tusky Benches 3 Team Members Against Port Washington
DOVER - Romance made its entrance into the Tuscarawas County Class B League Basketball Tournament at Memorial Hall last night and 3 of the Tuscarawas Broncos fidgeted on the bench like young men meeting their best girl's father for the 1st time. Head Coach Charmis Davis called it "insubordination" and suspended the players for last night's game with the Port Washington Purple Riders, but unofficial dope was a little different.
The story goes that Davis warned the lads not to go "a courtin" before the tournament game and the ban proves that they did...so he cracked down on them. If girls were there you might imagine their anguish as they saw their heroes sitting on the bench, not even in suits, as Port threatened to win.
"Why don't you ask someone else?," one of the suspended players said when asked why he and his 2 teammates were "sitting this one out." The boys kept pretty mum, squirmed around a little, but they served notice they'll be back next week ready to make up for the mistake they made.
Which just reminds us. If the boys under-estimated Coach Davis, they weren't the 1st ones to do that very thing. How he does it we don't know, but when tournament time comes you can always figure Tusky in there with enough basketball to bid for the Championship.
The All-County band again proved a big attraction at the tournament, keeping the spirit of the crowd up and lending a festive air to the games. Last night's director were H.E. Mohr, George Polce and Harold Pixler, all connected with the county muisc set-up.
Here's a tip for Referees Vic Schreiner, Russ Stevenson and Fizz Miller who refereed all games. From where we were sitting in the press box it seemed their whistles merely "chirped" and did not have the usual piercing blast which stops all play.
Cheerleaders, boys and girls in their bright silky jackets, jerseys, trousers and skirts were an eye-catching spectacle. They went through all the movements of the jitterbug rage as fans lustily yelled for their favorate teams. Most unusually dressed was the Tusky Cheerleaders, 2 boys and a girl, dressed as cowboys with hats, chaparajos and all.
A.C. Bahler of Sugarcreek, Tournament Manager, was well pleased with the big crowd which filled every seat and crowded the sidelines at the hall. Over 1,100 were paid customers, 300 more getting in on passes, but the opening night was bigger than last year's 1st night, he said.
Delay between games last night caused a total loss of about 45 minutes. The 1st game started on the dot at 7PM, but when the 4th game started it was 45 minutes late, starting at about 10:45PM. The Hall was not cleared until after midnight as fans slowly treked out.
