DOVER - The 1st game of the 1939 Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament belonged to the Sugarcreek-Shanesvilles Pirates (1-0) (29-15) and the Mineral City Tigers (0-1) (9-21). One forward, Bob Osborne of Mineral City, proved to be a big thorne in the side of Sugarcreek-Shanesville during the 1st half of their game, but the sharpshooter was bottled up in the final half and the Pirates went on to win 40-24. Oborne, using an unusual one-hand hook shot from way out, scored 12 points in the 1st half as the Creekers had a hard time taking a 9-8 lead at the 1st period of play and then falling behind 16-14 at the half.
But in the 3rd period, Mineral City was held to a lone field goal by guard Fred Fishley and Sugarcreek-Shanesville gathered momentum to lead 24-18 at the end of the quarter and then went on to pile up 16 points in the final stanza, while the Tigers made only 6.
Oborne of the Tigers and center Bob Becker of the Pirates were tied for scoring honors with 13 points apiece. Sugarcreek-Shanesville's guard Junior Jones hit double figures as well with 11 markers. Guard Ed English of Mineral City was ejected on personal fouls.
