39 - Midvale Takes-Out Tusky 34-30 (2-24-39)
Midvale Blue Devils Senior Center Bill Stevenson another rising star from the League and tournament hit the hoops for 21 points (10 field goals and 1 free throw) securing game honors while leading the Blue Devils to a close 34-30 victory of the Tuscarawas Broncos. Stevenson has broken a few Frank Baumholtz records this year. His 21 points duplicates his 21 points against the Baltic Eagles in Midvales' 54-32 triumph for a tournament total, thus far, of 42 markers.
DOVER - Senior center Bill Stevenson, picked all-county by the League's coaches, was hotter than a griddle at a harvest hands' breakfast party and slithered enough baskets through the hoops for an individual tally of 21 points as he paced his team to victory. But, he didn't stop with the scoring, he was all over the floor, offensively and defensively. He was credited with one digout after another and when his mates couldn't get the ball into him in his pivet position, he went out to the middle of the floor and dropped his shot in from there.
The Tuscarawas Broncos (1-1) (11-19), with a tricky zone defense that twice during the regular season had been too much for the Midvale Blue Devils (2-0) (26-13) and had limited Stevenson to 8 points each time, fell behind in the 1st period and never caught up. For last night's game 6th year Head Coach M.R. Helwig pulled a nice, new double pivot offense out of the bag, dusted it off and tossed it on the floor. The result was the upset.
With Stevenson leading the way, the Helwigmen led 8-4 at the close of the period, 16-12 at halftime as the rival fives clung to the pace and 24-21 at the end of the 3rd period in which the Broncos clipped the lead one point. Stevenson scored 10 of his points in the 3rd chukker. Tusky seemed off their stride in the shooting dividion and the fault was pushed along by a dogged Midvale defense which cut set shots to a minium, despite the keen and clever passing game of the Broncos.
In the final stanza, Tusky failed to make their move, only keeping pace as they picked up 9 points, while the Blue Devils copped 10 markers for a 34-30 loss. The game grew extremely rough in the late stages and resulted in one player from each team in being summarily banished from the game. Tusky's Senior guard Clarence Rolli was the 1st thrown out of the game. He went out midway through the final period when he deliberately blocked Midvale's guard Bob Baldwin and tossed the latter into the stands under the Midvale basket. Near the end of the game, Midvale's forward Frank Morrison pulled the same trick at the expense of the Broncos' Senior center Bill Arthurs and was thrown out.
Midvale was led by Stevenson's 21 points, while his teammate Morrison scored 10 points. Senior forward Earl Johnson was high for Tuscarawas with 7 points, while his mates Rolli and Arthurs picked up 6 and 5 markers, respectively.

39 - Bolivar Overpowers Stone Creek 39-24 (2-24-39)
Stone Creek Golden Panthers Senior forward Ed Lorenz poured in 16 points (5 field goals and 6 free throws) in gaining game honors in a losing effort against the Bolivar Cardinals 39-24. Lorenz was one of the stars of the League and tournament. He had scored 7 points against Gnaden and 18 markers against Port Washington for a total of 41 points. The Panthers bow out of the tournament with a 1-2 record.
DOVER - The Bolivar Cardinals (2-1) (23-17), presenting a well-balanced attack, trounced the Stone Creek Golden Panthers 39-24 in the 1st game of the tournament on the 24th.
The Panthers, through the efforts of its high-scoring Ed Lorenz, held the Cardinals to even terms in the 1st period, which ended with Bolivar leading 9-7, but fell behind from there on in, as Lorenz lost the range. The 2nd quarter found the Panthers picking up 6 points, while the Cardinals hit double that with 12 markers and at the half Bolivar led 21-13. The Cardinal Defense held the Panthers to just 5 points in the 3rd stanza, and again Bolivar raced to the end of the quarter leading 31-18 to more-or-less wrap up the game.
Bolivar forward Senior Justin Huth and guard Paul Burris once again, for the 2nd straight game, led the Cardinals in scoring, this time, with 13 points apiece. Senior Ed Lorenz hit the hoops for 16 points, while the Panthers took to the showers for the last time this year.

Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates Guard Junior Jones shared game honors with Sophomore Guard Glenn Regula of the Baltic Eagles with 10 points each. Jones led his team to an easy 35-23 victory in the last game on Saturday night sending Baltic to the showers and a return home.
DOVER - Teams in the county's Class B Basketball Tournament reached the parting of the ways with 6 games Saturday, some going home, completely eliminated, others heading on along the trails that lead to tournament honors and qualification for the Section Tournament meeting on March 3-4. A slender house of 900 were in Memorial Hall Saturday afternoon and evening as the Strasburg Tigers, Dundee Bulldogs and Midvale Blue Devils made their way to the semi-finals where the Tuscarawas Broncos awaited them for Friday night's games. Three hundred attended the afternoon session and 600 in the evening.
Strasburg turned back a hard-fighting Gnadenhutten Indians team 26-19, the Dundee Bulldogs downed the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates 27-25 and the Midvale Blue Devils coasted over the Baltic Eagles 54-32. Teams defeated in the regular tournament headed for the Consolation Division where the Stone Creek Golden Panthers swamped the Port Washington Purple Riders 41-20, Sugarcreek-Shanesville ousted Baltic 35-23 and the Bolivar Cardinals trounced the Mineral City Tigers 34-20. For Port, Baltic and Mineral City the defeats meant the end of the tournament and the end of their scholastic cage season.
Victorious teams return to the Hall next Friday and Saturday to continuous play and name a Tournament Champion which with the runner-up and the winner of the Consolation fight will be qualified to enter the Sectional Tournament which brings together all top Class B teams in Tuscasrawas, Carroll and Holmes counties. Two of the teams will be qualified in the Sectional for the District Tournament at Dennison.
In Saturday night's last game in the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament, guards Junior Jones with 10 points (5 field goals) and Don Hershberger with 9 points (3 field goals and 3 free throws) led the way for the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-1) (30-16) as they sent the Baltic Eagles (0-2) (14-21) home 35-23. The Pirates led the entire route after the 1st period which Baltic led 7-6. The Pirates then took the lead and ended the half 12-9. The Creekers then extended their lead in the 3rd quarter to 22-15 looking forward to the 4th stanza. In the final quarter, the Eagles managed 8 more points, but Sugarcreek-Shanesville continued their assault hitting the hoops for another 13 markers.
Jones of the Pirates hit double figures with 10 points, while the Eagles were led by Sophomore guard Glenn Regula who also hit double figures and the same about of points...10.

39 - Stone Creek Blasts Port 41-20 (2-18-39)
Stone Creek Golden Panther Senior Forward Ed Lorenz, their ace scoring machine, clicked the nets for 18 points (7 field goals and 4 free throws) and picking up easily, game honors and led his team in trouncing the Port Washington Purple Riders 41-20.
DOVER - The Golden Panther's Senior forward Ed Lorenz came back into his scoring form against the Port Washington Purple Riders (0-2) (4-19) hitting the nets for 18 points as the Stone Creek Panthers (1-1) (5-12) came home on the chin strap after running down the Purple Riders 41-20. First- year Head Coach W.E. Adams pulled Lorenz out of the game early in the final quarter.
The Panthers leaped to a 6-4 advantage at the end of the 1st quarter. Stone Creek's defense blanked Port Washington in the 2nd quarter, while the Panthers team scored another 13 points and the scoredboard read 19-4...Stone Creek, at intermission. As the Riders picked up the pace with 6 points in the 3rd quarter, The Panthers continued to run-up the score with another 13 points and at the end of the quarter led 32-10. In the 4th stanza, Port increased their output with 10 points, but it was against a different Panther team by then.
Lorenz led Stone Creek with 18 points and no other player hit double figures. Port Washington was led by their Junior center, Henry Linard with 9 points (2 field goals and 5 free throws).

39 - Strasburg Out-Lasts Gnaden 26-19 (2-18-39)
DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers (2-0) (44-9) defending District Champions, moved to their victory over the Gnadenhutten Indians (1-1) (18-20) in the 2nd and 4th periods piling up their lead there. The Indians slipped into the lead in the opening stanza with a 4-1 advantage, but the Tigers reversed the situation by outscoring the Reds 7-2 to command a 10-6 lead by halftime.
Gnaden matched Strasburg point-for-point in the 3rd period, where each team collected 7, but lost out in the final when the Tigers put on its stretch drive. Strasburg led the Indians once by 9 points, 24-15, in the final period before a belated Gnadenhutten rally netted 4 points.
Senior forward Loren Miller of Strasburg paced his team to victory, but Gnaden's Senior center Earl Crites was nudging him for individual honors with 11 points. Miller had 10 markers scored on 4 field goals and 2 free throws. Crites hit the nets with 3 field goals and 5 free throws.

39 - Bolivar Tames Mineral City Tigers 34-20 (2-18-39)
DOVER - In the 1st Consolation game of 1939, the Bolivar Cardinals (1-1) (22-17) had no trouble downing the Mineral City Tigers (0-2) (9-22) 34-20 in the Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament.
Forwards Senior Justin Huth and Paul Burris paced the Cardinals as they put the clamps on the Tigers of Mineral City in the 2nd and 4th periods to win going-away. Bolivar led Mineral City in the 1st quarter by a mere 2 points...5-3, and would lead the entire game. By intermission the Red Birds of Bolivar had extended their lead and led 16-5. Both teams scored just 6 points apiece in the 3rd stanza with a Cardinal lead of 21-11. The Tigers began hitting the hoops and collected 9 markers in the 4th quarter; however, the Cardinals never let up canning another 13 points to wrap up the game.
Huth and Burris of Bolivar shared game honors hitting double figures with 11 points each with both downing 5 field goals and a free throw. Mineral City, in a team effort, collected 4 points each by forward Dick Carpenter, center Wil Bailey and guards Fred Fishley and Alex Lindsey.

39 - Dundee Surprises Sugarcreek-Shanesville 27-25 (2-18-39)
Dundee Bulldogs 1939 High School Basketball Team. Front: Denver Smith - Loyal Peterman - Dick Machan - Vic Smith and Don Weber. Back: Ed Smith - Junior Machan - Milton Fruchey - Carl Laubsche and John Zaugg.
DOVER - The victory of Head Coach Bob Lanzer's Dundee Bulldogs (1-0) (13-20) over the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (1-1) (29-16), Tournament Champions of last year, was the high spot of the 2nd game on Saturday when the Bulldogs upset the Pirates 27-25. A truly half-pint Dundee substitute turned the trick with a basket caged from mid-court in the last minute of play.
The field goal was tossed by forward Milton Fruchey, so small that the Pirates refused to believe he could hit the backboard from the center of the court and who was in the game because Coach Lanzer had no substitutes eligible to enter the game again. As he pitched the basket he put his team into the lead 26-25 and just before the game ended Dick Machan scored a free throw for the final point.
The Pirates hopped to a slender 6-5 lead in the 1st period and maintained their 1-point advantage as the half arrived 16-15. Dundee fell behind in the 3rd quarter which ended 23-20, but quickly caught up in the final stanza and succeeded in tying the score 24-all, but Bulldog center Denver Smith fouled guard Bob Becker who sank the free throw to give the Pirates a 25-24 edge just before Fruchey heaved the pay-off shot. To many, Dundee's triumph seemed an upset, but officials refused to accept it as such, pointing out the fact that the Lanzermen had beaten the Pirates during the regular season.
Dundee's Senior guard Dick Machan, All-County in the pick of the coaches, led the scoring with 11 points. Becker was high for the Pirates with 8 markers.

DOVER - The Midvale Blue Devils (1-0) (25-13) and the Baltic Eagles (0-1) (14-20) in the 1st game on Saturday and conducted personally by Big Bill Stevenson of Midvale, who rattled 9 action shots and 3 free throws through the hoop for 21 points, claimed an easy victory over Baltic by the tune of 54-32.
Senior center Bill Stevenson, the League's leading scorer and the lad who broke a record set by the redoubtable Frank Baumholtz at Midvale, tallied 6 of his field goals beginning in the 1st period as the Blue Devils took a 29-12 lead over the Baltic Eagles by halftime. Midvale led 17-5 at the 1st quarter's end. Baltic drummed up a bid in the early part of the 3rd stanza, scoring 6 points before the Blue Devils could dent the net with a single one, but then Midvale blanked the Eagles, while collecting 8 themselves. The period ended with the Blue Devils leading 37-18.
Stevenson's 21 points gained him game honors and his teammates, forwards Frank Morrison and Bob Swinderman, had 12 and 10 markers, respectively. Junior forward Harold Lahm paced Baltic's attack with 10 points.

39 - Tusky Benches 3 Team Members Against Port Washington
DOVER - Romance made its entrance into the Tuscarawas County Class B League Basketball Tournament at Memorial Hall last night and 3 of the Tuscarawas Broncos fidgeted on the bench like young men meeting their best girl's father for the 1st time. Head Coach Charmis Davis called it "insubordination" and suspended the players for last night's game with the Port Washington Purple Riders, but unofficial dope was a little different.
The story goes that Davis warned the lads not to go "a courtin" before the tournament game and the ban proves that they did...so he cracked down on them. If girls were there you might imagine their anguish as they saw their heroes sitting on the bench, not even in suits, as Port threatened to win.
"Why don't you ask someone else?," one of the suspended players said when asked why he and his 2 teammates were "sitting this one out." The boys kept pretty mum, squirmed around a little, but they served notice they'll be back next week ready to make up for the mistake they made.
Which just reminds us. If the boys under-estimated Coach Davis, they weren't the 1st ones to do that very thing. How he does it we don't know, but when tournament time comes you can always figure Tusky in there with enough basketball to bid for the Championship.
The All-County band again proved a big attraction at the tournament, keeping the spirit of the crowd up and lending a festive air to the games. Last night's director were H.E. Mohr, George Polce and Harold Pixler, all connected with the county muisc set-up.
Here's a tip for Referees Vic Schreiner, Russ Stevenson and Fizz Miller who refereed all games. From where we were sitting in the press box it seemed their whistles merely "chirped" and did not have the usual piercing blast which stops all play.
Cheerleaders, boys and girls in their bright silky jackets, jerseys, trousers and skirts were an eye-catching spectacle. They went through all the movements of the jitterbug rage as fans lustily yelled for their favorate teams. Most unusually dressed was the Tusky Cheerleaders, 2 boys and a girl, dressed as cowboys with hats, chaparajos and all.
A.C. Bahler of Sugarcreek, Tournament Manager, was well pleased with the big crowd which filled every seat and crowded the sidelines at the hall. Over 1,100 were paid customers, 300 more getting in on passes, but the opening night was bigger than last year's 1st night, he said.
Delay between games last night caused a total loss of about 45 minutes. The 1st game started on the dot at 7PM, but when the 4th game started it was 45 minutes late, starting at about 10:45PM. The Hall was not cleared until after midnight as fans slowly treked out.

DOVER - Before a colorful crowd of over 1,500 fans which filled Memorial Hall to capacity, the 17th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B League Tournament got under way last night with a near upset by the Bolivar Caradinals and a terrific battle by the Port Washington Purple Riders featuring the show.
The Strasburg Tigers defeated Bolivar 29-24 from the free throw line; Tuscarawas finally put on a last period rally to drop Port Washington 43-27; The Gnadenhutten Indians clicked to take the Stone Creek Panthers 39-21 and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates downed a stubborn Mineral City Tigers 40-24.
With 3 regulars not in uniform, but sitting on the bench beside Head Coach Charmis Davis who temporarily suspended them for "insubordination" the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-0) (11-18) had a very hard time defeating the Port Washington Purple Riders (0-1) (4-18).
Port, which did not win a single game the entire year in League play, stepped out in the 1st period to grab a 10-8 lead, stayed in front throughout the 2nd period, but fell behind 21-19 at the half and by 28-24 at the 3rd period. Tusky clicked in the final period to score 15 points to Port's 3 to win the victory and a sigh of relief went up from the Broncos bench...where regulars Fred Blackstone, Les Johnson and Clarence Rolli got little thrill out of seeing their teammates pushed to the limit.
Senior forward Earl Johnson led the Broncos in scoring with 14 points and walked away with game honors; although, his teammates Senior center Bill Arthurs and Senior Bob McDonald were right behind him with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore Jim Goettge was high for the Purple Riders with 5 classy field goals for 10 markers.

DOVER - The Gnadenhutten Indians (1-0) (18-19) were very impressive and the Stone Creek Golden Panthers (0-1) (4-12) were very disappointing in their game which saw the Gnaden lads easily win by a 39-21 score. The Indians were hot, scoring from all angles, while the Panthers were completely off form, unable to dent the net, fumbling passes and throwing the ball away time after time.
Gnadenhutten led 13-3 at the end of the 1st quarter and was leading 22-6 at the half. Stone Creek more than doubled their 1st half total, but was still down in the 3rd stanza 28-13. The Indians outscored the Panthers in the 4th quarter 11-8. In his 1st tournament effort this year, Senior forward Ed Lorenz, Stone Creek scoring ace, was held to only 3 field goals and a free throw by the Indian defense.
Senior forward Bob Miller led Gnadenhutten with 14 points picking up game scoring honors, while Lorenz, forward Gil Mizer and center Turner all scored 7 points each for Stone Creek. Indian Senior center Earl Crites was also in double figures hitting 10 points.
