Tuscarawas Broncos Senior Center Lester Veigel scored 19 points for game honors and led his team in blasting the Magnolia Panthers 48-32.
DOVER - Even the darkest corner of Legion Hall couldn't have held an upset last night as 3 of the county's powerful Class B teams scored better than a point a minute each to sweep their 1st games in the Sectional Tournament. The Strasburg Tigers scored highest, piling up a 56-25 margin over the Walnut Creek Cardinals. Tuscarawas took the closest game from Magnolia 48-32 and the Dennison Railroaders had an easy time with the Berlin Hawks by a 50-22 score. Only 198 paid admission to see the games, D.C. Lemmon, Principal of Dover High School and Tournament Manager, reported. Low attendance was blamed partly on bad weather.
Tonight the Tigers meet its 2nd test when Strasburg plays the Dover St. Joseph Ramblers at 8PM with the winner returning on Saturday night to play Tuscarawas in one of the 2 final games. The Tigers defeated Tusky 29-28 in the county tournament final. The Midvale Blue Devils, County Tournament Consolation Championship winners, take their 1st crack at the Sectional Tournament tonight when they meet the Millersburg Knights at 7PM with this winner taking on the Railroaders in the 2nd final Saturday night.
The Tuscarawas Broncos (3-1), county tournament runnrs-up, had the toughest assignment on their hands last night, but came through in fine style with a victory over the speedy Panthers which had won the Carroll County Tournament. The Broncos led all the way.
A fast attack with forward Tozzi and center Costello pulling some sharp-shooting, held the Broncos to a 14-10 lead at the end of the 1st period, but 9 year Head Coach Charmis Davis' boys met the challenger and took a 26-18 lead at halftime. Magnolia still continued to balk until the final quarter started with Tuscarawas leading by only 34-27. The final period saw Tusky keep the basket hot to pile up 14 points to 5 for Magnolia.
Senior Lester Veigel, Tuscarawas' star center, led his team to victory with a classy 19 point total (6 field goals and 7 free throws), while Tozzi and Costello led Magnolia with 14 (6 field goals and 2 free throws) and 10 points (5 field goals) respectively.
