37 - Midvale Wins 4th Annual Consolation Tournament 45-33 (2-27-37)
DOVER - The Midvale Blue Devils (4-1) (21-11) upset by the Tuscarawas Broncos (2-0) (9-15) 34-31 in an openng game swept through the Consolation Tournament defeating the Stone Creek Panthers (1-2) (4-9) 47-27 and dropping the Bolivar Cardinals (2-2) (20-14) 22-20 in the tourney's only overtime game. The Blue Devils won going-away by mauling the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-2) (24-15) 45-33 for their 2nd straight Consolation Championship. Sugarcreek-Shanesville defeated the Dundee Bulldogs (0-2) (12-18) 50-25, lost to Tuscarawas and defeated the Baltic Eagles (2-2) (12-18) 25-18 and then fell into Midvale's lap.
It didn't take Midvale long to get going for the Blue Devils, with Senior forward Frank Baumholtz scoring 4 field goals and were in front 10-7 in the 1st quarter and continued to lead 23-18 by the half. Center Paul Andrews of Sugarcreek-Shanesville, went out of the game in the 3rd period on personal fouls and it was all over by that time. The Blue Devils pumped them in to lead by 35-24 at the end of the 3rd period and continued the drive before giving away to substitutes in the last few minutes.
Baumholtz (The Midvale Marvel) drove-home 18 points (8 field goals and 2 free throws) for the Blue Devils, while his teammate, forward John Hawkins, crowded him closely with 10 points (5 field goals). Senior forward Cliff Moomaw headed Sugarcreek-Shanesville's scoring with 10 markers (3 field goals and 4 free throws), while Senior guard John Harmon followed that up with another 9 points (3 field goals and 3 foul shots).
