37 - Midvale Chokes in 34-31 Loss To Tusky (2-20-37)

Tuscarawas Bronco Senior Center Lester Veigel was too much for the Midvale Blue Devis as he won game scoring honors by hitting the hoops for 19 points (4 field goals and 11 free throws).

DOVER - A startling upset was turned in by the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-0) (8-15) in the feature game of the 1st week of the tournament when the Broncos sent the Midvale Blue Devils (0-1) (17-11) into the Consolation Division with a 34-31 setback.  Lester Veigel, whose brother Allan graduated in 1936 and would go on to pitch baseball for the National League Boston Bees in 1939, was too much for the Blue Devils.  He controlled the tip-off to put Midvale on the defense and scored better than half of his team's points with 19.

Midvale  took a 6-5 lead in the 1st quarter, but found themselves behind 14-13 by halftime.  From that point on, the Broncos took command as Veigel dropped in 5 straight free throws and Junior forward Joe Bolini hit one after the 3rd period opened.  Midvales' forwards Senior Frank Baumholtz and John Hawkins scored a couple of nice shots, but Tuscarawas still led 28-22.  Baumholtz dropped in a fielder with Veigel right behind him, but Tusky's guard Arthur Price made a long shot.  Veigel dropped in another free throw to give the Broncos 31 and Baumholtz and guard Taylor of Midvale scored 5 points between them to knot the count with about a minute remaining.  Taylor missed a sucker shot and Midvale's hopes faded.  Bolini slipped through a fielder and Veigel had still another free throw as the game ended.  Tuscarawas made 16 out of 22 foul shots in their victory, Veigel dropping in 11 of them before hitting the bench on personals in the last 2 seconds.  Hawkins and Price hit the showers for Midvale.

Baumholtz led Midvale's attack with 15 points (5 field goals and 5 free throws) even though he couldn't seem to hit on a regular basis and Hawkins was next with 7 markers on 3 field goals and a free throw.
