37 - Frank Baumholtz (The Midvale Marvel)

Frank Baumholtz (The Midvale Marvel), the future university, professional basketball and baseball star.

DOVER - Frank Baumholtz of the Midvale Blue Devils, leading Class B League scorer was picked today by the Daily Reporter's All-County Class B Tournament Basketball Team and has one of the most enviable scoring records in the annuals of the County Class B League, according to figures released by his coach, M.R. Helwig, former Bolivar Cardinal star.

During the regular season just closed, Baumholtz scored an average of 17.4 points each game and boosted his average for the 4 years he has played as a member of the Midvale team to 11.1.  It may not be a record, but it's an awful good performance.  During his 4 years, Frank played in 64 games, tallied 305 field goals and 176 free throws for a total of 754 points.  He made 67.5 percent of the free throws he shot (you can find him on youtube making a foul shot (under handed) for Ohio University).

Not content with that, he went on in the county tournament to lead all scorers and set himself up an average of 16.3 points a game!  And his team lost its very 1st start!  Frank with a tricky hook shot that defies the best efforts of the best guards, can"go" in any company in the belief of Head Coach Helwing.  He doesn't depend on other members of the team to furnish him with all of his shots; although, he is naturally the member of the team who is "fed" when points are needed.

Baumholtz's best performance during the past season was against the Stone Creek Panthers.  There the Midvale star...and it was last November when the season was very young...racked up 21 field baskets and 7 fouls for 49 points, tying the League record set by John"Johnny" Studer, Strasburg's wizard of a few seasons ago.  Midvale won the game 105-9, a record in itself.  The 49 points is a good bit short of the national mark of Bobby Thompson of Passaic, New Jersey, who made 69 points in a single game in the 1921-22 season.  He turned the trick in a game which his team won 145-5...give Midvale those extra 40 points and Baumholtz probably would have equaled Thompson's mark.  Another record that Baumholtz falls just short of is the 50 points Ward Yarman of Rittman High School, in Wayne County tallied against another Wayne County Class B team this season.

But, over 4 years of play, the 11.1 point average is something to crow about.  During his Freshman year, when he played in only 12 games, Baumholtz scored 40 field goals and 20 free throws for 60 points.  As a Sophomore he hit 42 baskets and 31 fouls for 115 points, boosting his Freshman average from 5.8 points a game to 7.2.  In his Junior year he really started to work.  The baskets added up to 94 and the fouls to 52 for a total of 240 points and an average of 14.1.  He did his best foul shooting that season and was credited with a percentage of 73.2.  Then during the season just closed he would up that with 129 baskets and 73 fouls for 331 points or an average of 17.4 points for 19 games.  He played only 17 games in his Junior year and only 16 when a Sophomore.

His tournament play reached its peak this season with the 16.3 point average in 5 games during which he tallied 81 points.  Last season he played 7 games and scored only 82 points averaging 11.6.
