37 - Strasburg Turns-Back Philo 36-33 (3-12-13)
Strasburg Tigers Senior Center Ramon Renner earns game honors by hitting 18 points (8 field goals and 2 free throws) in leading the Tigers to a 36-33 win over the Philo Electrics 36-33.
DENNISON - Taking a lead at the opening whistle, the Strasburg Tigers (7-0) were never headed by the Philo Electrics of Muskingum County, but the game turned into a nip and tuck affair and the Bengals of Strasburg were forced to rally once each quarter before they pulled a 36-33 victory out of the fire.
With Ramon Renner setting the pace, Strasburg swept into a 7-3 lead midway in the 1st period, but Philo cut it down to 7-5 at the quarter's end. Renner continued his barrage in the 2nd period to put the Tigers in front 15-6, but the Electrics' center Brannen and guard Arnold teamed up to make the score 15-14 at the half. Again in the 3rd stanza, Strasburg built up a nice 25-18 lead only to see Philo turn on the presure and cut it down to 25-23. Two long shots by Arnold, Philo sharpshooter, cut the Tigers' lead to 27-26 early in the final period, but Junior guard Charles Reiger started hitting, tossing in 3 straight field goals to give Strasburg a 33-26 lead. Two field goals and a free throw were scored by Arnold for Philo, but Junior forward Paul "Pete" Haswell came through with a bucket and a foul for the Tigers and the game was on ice.
Renner's 18 points, all scored in the 1st 3 periods, was high for Strasburg, but Arnold of Philo led him in a close chase with 16, most of which were tallied on long shots. Reiger scored 9 points for Strasburg, with Haswell getting 5 and Freshman forward Garver Wallick and Sophomore guard Lloyd Haas picking up another 2 points each. Strasburg made 4 out of 9 foul shots, missing 5 charity tosses in the 1st period. Haas went out in the final period on fouls. Philo made only 5 of 13 free throws.
