37 - Strasburg Head Coach "Arrested"
Strasburg High School Tigers 8 Year Head Coach Paul M. Roby
DOVER - Head Coach Paul M. Roby of Strasburg High School was arrested this morning, pleaded guilty to a stern charge, was pronounced guilty and given sentence. It all happened in the Gebib Restaurant and was a complete surprise to Roby who at 7:30AM might not have been quite up on his toes.
R.C. Spidell, President of Strasburg Council, walked in and placed Roby under arrest. He read the charge of "carrying trophies into the Strasburg High School and sending out athletes to win them much to the envy of other schools." Roby pleaded guilty and up stepped Mayor W.M. Mauk who pronounced sentence in the form of handing the coach a gold wrist watch, bought by citizens in appreciation of Roby's fine work there.
Mayor Mauk suspended a $500 fine provided Roby continues to produce good teams.

37 - South Amherst Beaten Once Entire Year Plays Midvale
SOUTH AMHERST - A ball club that registered 25 straight victories before it finally suffered its 1st defeat in the entire season...tournament play included...is the South Amherst High School Falcons (25-1) who will face the Midvale Blue Devils (24-3) in their opening game at the State Basketball finals on the Ohio State University Gymnasium floor Thursday night.
South Amherst is also the team that struck Dennison from the ranks of the contenders a year ago when the Railroaders won the Eastern District Championship that now belongs to Midvale. Canal Fulton is the only team that outscored the Falcons. The score was 34-25 and the game was the final of the Northestern District Tournament at Ravenne. The time was last Saturday night.
The Falcons waded through their regular schedule of games to win the Lorain County Class B championship. But since their string of victories included 2 over Amherst and the latter held victories over Bellevue and Bellevue in turn held a victory over Elyria, the South Amherst boys immediately laid claim to the entire Championship of the County...regardless of class. During the 21 games on its regular season slate, South Amherst marked up a total of 655 points to 355 for its opponents. The figures give the Falcons an average of 31.1 points a game to 16.9 for their opponents. No comparative scores are available.
Three members of the team which represented South Amherst at Columbus a year ago are back with this year's quintet and one of them, Joe Klimosewski, a forward, is the team's leading scorer. The other 2 veterans are Harold Brucker and Johnny Lupe and new members are Alfred Jones and John Kilmosewaski runners up to Joe Klimosewski for scoring honors in the order named. Joe in his 4th year and Lupe his third, both were mentioned on the 2nd All-State Team last season. Other members of the team are Dave Sliman, Harry Novak and Elmer Schacht who is not releated to the coach whose name is Ed Schacht. Head Coach Schacht is a former South Amherst and Miami University star.
In the South Amherst-Dennison game at the State finals last year, Dennison was declared by its backers to be off form. South Amherst turned in a 27-22 victory, but was defeated in its 2nd round game by Millersport which won a 32-30 victory. On the occasion of the Dennison game, Joe Klimosewski tallied 6 points, Bucker 2 and Lupe 2, but all 3 boys have another season under their belts and Joe, as noted, has become the team's high scorer.
All in all it means that the work is well laid out for Head Coach M.R. Helwig and his Blue Devils.

37 - Midvale Blue Devils To Make Columbus Trip By Train
DOVER - With Dick Belknap, big Freshman center, recovering from an injured ankle and a chicken dinner awaiting at the State Capital, the Midvale Blue Devils today were chomping at the bit, ready to entrain at Dennison Thursday morning to take their crack at the State Class B Title at Columbus Thursday night. Belknap, who injured his ankle a short time before the Midvale-Strasburg game on Saturday night, is improving and may be in shape to be used in the 1st game, Head Coach M.R. Helwig said today.
A pep rally is scheduled for the last period of school Wednesday when students will give the players a rousing sendoff. Privae cars will take the 10 players, Coach Helwig and Faculty Manager P.O. Cochran to the Dennison station Thursday where at 7:34AM they will board a train for Columbus.
They will stay at the Deshler Wallick Hotel and after holding a practice session at the Ohio State Gymnasium, will eat a chicken dinner at 12:30PM. The dinner will be given by Pat Dunn, State Representative from Strasburg, who offered the dinner to any Tuscarawas County Class B Team which made the trip to Columbus. There will be plenty of time for the team to digest the dinner before their game with South Amherst Falcons at 8PM, Coach Helwig said.

37 - Crowd Fills Auditorium In Less Than 20 Minutes
DENNISON - Packed and jammed around entrances hours before the doors opened, the crowd which witnessed the Eastern Ohio District Tournament finals at Dennison Saturday night filled the spacious gym and auditorium within 20 minutes after officials started taking tickets. The seats were actually filled before that time, but on orders of E.F. McCarroll, Tournament Manager, the doors were locked at 6:50PM. They had been opened at 6:30PM. Participating teams, officials and newspapermen alike experienced difficulty in working their way through the immense crowds that jammed the corridors and milled around the outside doors.
All sorts of dodges were tried on the gatemen, but few worked. The most successful one was that in lwhich the customers went to the door without first buying tickets and offered cash. Despite the terrific jam, only a few deadbeats got by the gates, Mr. McCarroll said. The crowd filled available aisles and space around the floor gave vent to a wild demonstration at the end of the game.
Senior forward Frank Baumholtz, hero of the Midvale Blue Devils team, was carried off the floor on the shoulders of his many admirers after his team defeated the Strasburg Tigers 27-26 for the District Championship. The Midvale-Strasburg game drew 2 demonstrations, one when 20 seconds of playing time remained and the crowd thought the game was over and two when the referees called a foul on a Midvale player and the scorers, trying to find out which player committed the foul, resorted to the timers' whistle. As action stopped and silence fell, someone at the top of the bleachers yelled: THE GAME IS OVER. And the crowd swarmed onto the floor. It took several minutes to restore order to complete the game.
Tournament Manager McCarrol today lamented the fact that all the fans who went to Dennison couldn't be let into the gym and said the doors were locked as a safety measure. Paid admissions Saturday night totaled 1,800 bringing the total for the 2 nights to 3,400. Receipts for the 2 sessions (Dover and Strasburg "Dover also won their game in Class A") hit $1,702.00 as compared with $2,230 last year when there were 4 sessions in the final drawing and attendance of 5,000.
Trophies for the winning teams were donated by Dennison business men and the Tournament Champions received a tall silver column topped by a basketball player and runners-up received mahogany placques mounted with a silver figure. Individual members of the teams all received belt buckles from the State Association. Buckles for the Champions were decorated with gold basketballs, for the runners-up with silver basketballs.

37 - Midvale Wins District Tournament (3-13-37)
Midvale Blue Devil Guard Bill Stevenson scored 9 points (3 field goals and 3 free throws) in leading his team to the District Tournament Championship by ekeing out a 27-26 win over the Strasburg Tigers.
Strasburg Tiger Senior Center Ramon Renner gained game honors by scoring 12 points (4 field goals and 4 free throws) in a losing cause against the Midvale Blue Devils.
DENNISON - Right behind the Crimsons of Dover who beat New Philadelphia 33-24 in a Class A Championship game, came the Midvale Blue Devils (8-1) with Head Coach M.R. Helwig and his leading scorer, Senior Forward Frank Baumholtz. The Blue Devils were hit by the loss of their center, Dick Belknap, in practice before the final game and turned an ankle, stabbed through a tough and relentless Strasburg Tigers (7-1) to win the Class B Championship of the Dstrict in a thrilling duel which saw the Tigers, County B League and Tournament Champions go down 27-26. Midvale, in its victory over the Strasburg Tigers, was considered by authorities as the brainiest Class B five in the county, chalked up its 1st District Championship to the credit of Head Coach Helwig, a former Bolivar High School player now in his 4th year at the Midvale helm.
Midvale and Strasburg each eliminated Muskingum County teams Friday night to reach the District playoff. Midvale defeated the Hopewell Comets and Strasburg turned back the Philo Electrics. Saturday night was full of individual stars, but the brightest was Strasburg's Junior guard Charles "Babe" Reiger. Reiger held Midvale's Bauhholtz to just 7 points. And, that's an eloquent statement.
Midvale's Champions spotted Strasburg the center tip-off because of the injury to Belknap and with it much of the ball possession, but still had sure enough eyes to make the most of their opportunities. They trailed 5-3 at the 1st quarter, but reversed the situation and took a 12-8 lead in the 2nd as Baumholtz found the range and fanned in 1 field goal and 2 free throws, while forward John Hawkins contributed 1 basket and a foul and Herron chimed in with the 3rd bucket. Strasburg; meanwhile, was getting only 3 points, a field goal and a free throw from Senior Ramon Renner, star Tiger scorer, who was moved to the center position.
Strasburg overhauled the lead in the 3rd period and picked up 7 points to Midvale's 2 and swept back into the lead 15-14 as the period ended. The Tigers tied the count at 14-14 half way through the period and then forged ahead on a free throw by Renner just as the gun cracked. Stevenson, Midvale guard, supplied the punch that carried the Blue Devils to victory, as well as to the State Tournament, in the final frame. His one-handed attack brought 7 points to the book and paced his team to a 13-11 advantage for the period. Baumholtz contributed 2 free throws, center Francis Herron another field goal and guard Dick Raylor yet another basket.
Scoring honors went to Strasburg's Renner with 12 points. Stevenson was high for Midvale with nine. Baumholtz, who had tallied 73 points in 3 tournament games prior to the final was held to seven. "Babe" Reiger, Tiger sparkplug and guard gets credit for that. Reiger's game was probably the best of his career. He limited the great Midvale star to 14 shots and forced him to get them off in great haste. All the while he was gathering up 5 points for himself and holding Baumholtz is in itself a big game.

37 - District Championship Game (Strasburg-Midvale)
DENNISON - For the last 4 months the Strasburg Tigers and Midvale Blue Devils were the talk of the County Class B League, holding the spotlight throughout the season. Then they led the county tournament, Strasburg winning the Championship and Midvale taking the Consolation Championship to reach the Sectional Tournament where all disputes to their power were swept aside. Tonight it will be the Tigers and the Blue Devils again, but this time it will be at the District Championship game in Dennison and a trip to Columbus, the supreme hope of every high school team, which will go to the winner.
Strasburg and Midvale teamed up last night even cheered for each other and sent the Philo Electrics and Hopewell Comets, Muskingum County entries, out of the tournament. The Tigers eliminated Philo 36-33 and the Blue Devils dropped Hopewell 46-29. Those 2 victories mean that during the year Tuscarawas County's Class B League always rated as unusually tough, has been playing the best ball of the western half of the Eastern District, covering about 7 counties.
But, through all this playing these 2 teams have met only once and that was at Midvale in December where the Blue Devils handed Strasburg a 22-18 defeat in the last half rally. In that game, Frank Baumholtz (The Midvale Marvel), star forward who scored 26 points in a sweet performance last night, was held to just 14 points by Strasburg, but Junior Charles Reiger and Sophomore Lloyd Haas, star Tiger guards, went out of the game on fouls.
With that game being replayed by fans all over the county, 2 points are brought out. Strasburg, County Champions, will be seeking revenge and Midvale, Consolation Champions, will be seeking to repeat. That sets the stage for the All-Tuscarawas County B final tonight, the smooth-working Tigers taking on the sharpshooting Midvale five. It should be a real battle.

37 - Baumholtz-Midvale Too Much For Hopewell 46-29 (3-12-37)
Midvale Blue Devils Senior Forward Frank Baumholtz (The Midvale Marvel) poured in 26 points (11 field goals and 4 free throws) in gaining game honors and leading his team to a 46-29 triumph over the Hopewell Comets.
DENNISON - It took Frank Baumholtz, Midvale's flashy forward, just one quarter to get started in the Blue Devils' game with Hopewell, New Concord Tournament winner, but after he started, Hopewell dropped out of the picture and the Midvale Blue Devils (7-1) coasted through to a 46-29 win.
The Blue Devils led at the 1st quarter 12-8 after Baumholtz, forward John Hawkins and guard Bill Stevenson each dropped in 4 points. Racing up and down the floor, stealing the ball from the guards, outdribbling the Comets' fastest men and dumping the ball through with flawless precision, Midvale's star iced the game for his team in the 2nd period. His 7 field goals and a free throw added 15 points to the Blue Devils' total to put Hopewell far behind 27-19, at the half. Baumholtz's show by far the best turned in either Class A or B during the evening, continued for a 3 bucket stretch in the 3rd period which found Midvale ahead 39-22. He scored only 1 point in the final period to bring his total to 26.
Forward Harkness scored 10 points for Hopewell. Hawkins, who for the last several games has turned in sweet performances for Midvale, couldn't hit regularly, but made 8 points during the game. The 26 points scored last night gives Baumholtz a total of 78 in his last 3 tournament games. He scored 27 against Dennison in the Sectional Tournament and 25 against the Millersburg Knights. Head Coach M.R. Helwick gave his subs a short workout in the final stages of the game.

NOTE: Frank Baumholtz, star Midvale basketball forward, marked up what is believed an all-time tournament record last night when he poured in 10 straight shots without a single miss. He scored 26 points for Midvale in its game with Hopewell and stole the tournament show, missed his 1st shot at the basket. He made the second. Then he missed 14 straight before he found the hoop in the 2nd quarter. And then he scored 7 straight before the half ended. In the 2nd half he continued and hit 3 more before the string was broken.

37 - Strasburg Turns-Back Philo 36-33 (3-12-13)
Strasburg Tigers Senior Center Ramon Renner earns game honors by hitting 18 points (8 field goals and 2 free throws) in leading the Tigers to a 36-33 win over the Philo Electrics 36-33.
DENNISON - Taking a lead at the opening whistle, the Strasburg Tigers (7-0) were never headed by the Philo Electrics of Muskingum County, but the game turned into a nip and tuck affair and the Bengals of Strasburg were forced to rally once each quarter before they pulled a 36-33 victory out of the fire.
With Ramon Renner setting the pace, Strasburg swept into a 7-3 lead midway in the 1st period, but Philo cut it down to 7-5 at the quarter's end. Renner continued his barrage in the 2nd period to put the Tigers in front 15-6, but the Electrics' center Brannen and guard Arnold teamed up to make the score 15-14 at the half. Again in the 3rd stanza, Strasburg built up a nice 25-18 lead only to see Philo turn on the presure and cut it down to 25-23. Two long shots by Arnold, Philo sharpshooter, cut the Tigers' lead to 27-26 early in the final period, but Junior guard Charles Reiger started hitting, tossing in 3 straight field goals to give Strasburg a 33-26 lead. Two field goals and a free throw were scored by Arnold for Philo, but Junior forward Paul "Pete" Haswell came through with a bucket and a foul for the Tigers and the game was on ice.
Renner's 18 points, all scored in the 1st 3 periods, was high for Strasburg, but Arnold of Philo led him in a close chase with 16, most of which were tallied on long shots. Reiger scored 9 points for Strasburg, with Haswell getting 5 and Freshman forward Garver Wallick and Sophomore guard Lloyd Haas picking up another 2 points each. Strasburg made 4 out of 9 foul shots, missing 5 charity tosses in the 1st period. Haas went out in the final period on fouls. Philo made only 5 of 13 free throws.

37 - Midvale Trounces Dennison 50-34 (3-6-37)
Midvale Blue Devils Senior Forward Frank Baumholtz (The Midvale Marvel) scored 27 points (10 field goals and 7 free throws) in wrapping up game honors while leading his team in slamming the Dennison Railroaders by 16 points, 50-34.
DOVER - A new all-time record for attendance at the Class B Sectional Basketball Tournament at Legion Hall was set Saturday night when 1,007 persons paid admission, according to D.C. Lemmon, Principal of Dover High School and Tournament Manager. The number brought the 3-day total to 1,928, the best attendance the meet has enjoyed in 5 of 6 years. Receipts totalled $599.20, also an all-time record. The attendance was 338 over last year and the receipts topped last year's "take" by $105.15, Mr. Lemmon said.
Two Tuscarawas County Class B League teams today were casting hopeful eyes on the District finals at Dennison this week-end and far-away glimpses at a trip to Columbus as a result of winning the Class B Sectional meet finals Saturday night at Legion Hall. The county's representatives will be the Tigers of Strasburg and the Blue Devils of Midvale both of whom went through all ball games Saturday night to eliminate the Tuscarawas Broncos and Dennison Railroaders, the latter defending Eastern District Champions.
Strasburg's 33-30 victory over Tuscarawas made it 3 straight for the Tigers over the surprising Broncos crew which pounded at Strasburg all through the tournaments, coming close "but" never winning. Midvale's 50-34 victory over Dennison was something of an upset, or at least the margin of victory was, but no ball club could keep up with the Blue Devils' Senior forward Frank Baumholtz and forward John Hawkins who poured so many baskets through the hoop they had Dennison dizzy. Both games were played through a bedlam of noise made by clamoring and cheering fans, 1,007 of who made the final night the most successful of the tournament. After the final game with Dennison, Midvale fans rushed to the floor to seize Baumholtz and Hawkins and carry them off on their shoulders. Many stayed late to enjoy the sweetness of victory and revenge, for it was Dennison that ruined Midvale's hopes just last year.
With Baumholtz furnishing the majority of the points and Hawkins setting off the spark early in the 1st quarter, Midvale held a 12-4 lead over Dennison as the period ended. Turning on the heat in a shooting exhibition that was comparable to Midvale's, the Railroaders put the game in a 20-20 tie at the half when center Rector smashed 5 field goals through the hoop and forward Hunter and guard Wanosik added 3 more action shots. Midvale's startling shooting exhibition, which by far topped anything seen at Legion Hall this year, continued even more fiercely in the 3rd period and the Blue Devils held a 37-25 lead at the quarter. Early in the 4th stanza, Dennison crept up to a 40-32 score, but Baumholtz and guard Bill Stevenson took charge, dropping in enough points to check the rally.
Baumholtz was high scorer for the game, making 27 points, while Hawkins dented the cords for 14. The total gave Baumholtz 52 points in 2 games and Hawkins 29 in 2 games. Joe Rector led Dennison's attack with 14 points on 7 field goals, while Hunter followed with 11 points.
Jimmy Morgan of New Philadelphia and Bup Miller of Beach City, refereed all games during the tournament.
