44 - Tusky Wins A Close One Against Midvale 36-31 (2-24-44)

DOVER - Because of its closeness, the Midvale Blue Devils (2-1) (35-18) and the Tuscarawas Broncos (3-0) (21-25) game stole the limelight so far in last night's games.  While both teams played spotty ball, the Broncos came up with the best performance over the long haul winning 36-31; although, they at no time had a "safe" lead over the Blue Devils whose tournament play has been marked by their ability to score their points in bunches.  Junior forward Dick Bonvechio set the scoring pace for the victors who had to pull all the stops to keep ahead of the dogged Midvale combination.

The rivals were tied at 11-all at the end of the 1st quarter, but Tusky spurted and grabbed an 18-14 advantage in the 2nd period and built it to a 9-point advantage in the 3rd stanza to lead 30-21 as the final quarter opened.  Midvale rallied in the drive and with Junior center Gene Hawkins pitching 3 straight field goals, gave Tuscarawas a few awkward minutes, but the Broncos held on and weathered the storm with Hawkins leaving the game on personal fouls.

Bonvechio tallied 7 times from the field and once from the free throw line for 15 points and game honors.  Junior forward Chuck Lorenz followed that up scoring 7 points to secure the Bronco win.  Hawkins of Midvale hammered home 5 field goals and 3 free throws for 13 markers before being chased from the floor.  Forward Jim Rennicker added his 8 points.
